Personally, I have no clue whatsoever how we made it this long into the MMO genre without a Shadowrun MMO.
Shadowrun is one of the most fleshed out, rich with lore, games ever created. Not only that, but it's a concept that is tailor made for raiding.
When you create characters in shadowrun, you're essentially creating raiders. Their entire job is to break into facilities and kill people, steal technology, extract clients, plant evidence, perpetrate false flag attacks... ect.
Also there's still World of Darkness that's dying to be MMO'ized. CCP totally screwed the pooch on that one and now another company owns the IP. Hopefully they can do something with it.
Although, to be honest, I think that a WoD MMO would be terrible if they started off with Vampires as the only playable monsters. It would be really difficult to stick close to the lore of the game and only have vampires as they can technically kill each other pretty easily. So the lives of vampires are much more social and political than the other monsters.
Werewolves, on the other hand, are combat machines designed to protect the earth from evil. Therefore they lend themselves better to MMO's which are primarily combat oriented.
Gears of War and Assassins Creed are the two big single player franchises which I think would work well.
Both can easily be set up for either themepark or sandpark style MMOs, both have great lore / worlds to build on and both offer a good variety of things to do.
Gears of War I can see being themepark or, hopefully, a true hybrid. Setting up clans, building home bases, expanding into trading hubs, warring with the horde as well as rival clans, constant struggles to stay alive. Plenty of weapons / armour / fighting styles to keep it interesting. The horde can provide some great PvE encounters etc. I'm imagining at least one raid being set in the white house!
Assassins Creed I would hope would go full on sandbox. They'd probably have to go Black Flag era or similar - I think they'd run into too many technical problems if the game were set entirely in cities like London. Could have some great assassins vs templars pvp / territory / politics conflicts. Splinter off and become pirates, traders, farmers or whatever. Find an island and set up a base.
Both GoW and AC have large, existing fanbases to ensure good sales of the game and the combat in both is suitable for consoles to ensure large target audience. Also, both series have a lot of money behind them so they'd actually be able to achieve AAA quality.

Pokemon except set in fantasy and you collect heroes instead of pokemon and have a hero manager as a side thing to do. Fight other heroes and control them and make sure they don't turn against you if your leadership isn't high enough. I can't see why that wouldn't do well with all the different heroes and leadership possibilities. Would have to be done good though.
Im still hoping someone will buy Copernicus and finish the project. Letting that Amalur IP go to waste is really a shame.
Doesn't EA own it or are they just publishing it on Steam and Origin. I would like to see this too.
Agreed. I really liked the combat in the game
Agreed ..KOA great world great combat , good lore solid crafting ... was looking forward to Coppernicus .. real shame
I think the real problem with KoA was that the budget was spent frivolously and without any real oversight. A famous artist who put out some of his worst work in making some seriously ugly visuals for the game. RA Salvatore - an overrated hack to begin with - putting forth some of his worst work in crafting the game's barebones story and drywall-chewing characters. Not to mention flat voice acting. These things didn't come cheaply and did nothing for the game's quality.
That said, I do wish that the game had succeeded, because the background lore was interesting, if undercooked, and the combat would have been peerless if only the game had so much as the slightest hint of challenge. I liked its approach to progression and classes, and I really wish more games would emulate the things that KoA did well.

Though I love Shadowrun I can't agree about it being tailor made for raiding. I can't think of too many "boss battles" that are prevalent in raids. It is made for small groups going on missions though. If there was a good Shadowrun MMORPG out or on the way I would have never thought about making my own game.
I have been finding myself playing more and more single player games than I used to. Even ESO I typically play more as a single player game.
This kinda answered your question already... MMOs these days are nothing more than online single player games. So why even try to transform a single players into a MMO when the content will be 95% single player anyway..?
Pokemon or Fallout. I'm leaning towards fallout because the idea of an open-world PVP MMO in the Wasteland sounds so amazing. The game has I think the perfect setting.

Which is funny because as we see more and more MMO leave the need to group behind we are seeing more and more games once only single player push the need for groups. Like console games. Destiny, The Division, Homefront. Even more are putting focus on Co-Op again after leaving it behind for a few years. Even Couch Co-Op like older games were famous for adding. Games like Far Cry 4, Divinity and Diablo 3 come to mind.
and co-op small group-play makes a MMO? If so, may as well as call D3, Division, Destiny MMOs, and be done with.
Wait .. aren't some of those are called MMO already?
Well vague use of the term "occasionally" more like the vast majority almost never care about another player in the game MOST of the time.
FFXI from 13 years ago is the LAST game i have seen where players actually care that it is a MMO,as every single game is full of players just playing alone,by themselves, couldn't care less if they even see another player.
I would liken the majority of gamer's to race horses with blinkers on,the blinkers allow them to vee line towards the hand holding yellow markers that give them quests to follow and guess what,SINGLE player quests lol,so yeah. My point is pretty much ANY and every game could be a great MMO,we still need a developer who for one is willing to put in the effort to make it a mmo and two knows wtf they are doing to make it a MMO.I know for myself i couldn't care less what game or genre it is,i'll play any game if it is done well and properly to the genre it claims to be.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Why? Because there is a demographic of gamers that like playing alongside each other. Online gaming isn't a special niche thing like it was 20 years. I enjoy gaming alongside others. I enjoy occasionally grouping with them. I like crafting and using the AH. The chat banter and sense of community is fun.
ESO and TOR do great at this. It could be a factor in why they're so popular.
They would probably be more popular single player games. STWOR would be epic if it had tactical combat like it's single player predecessors.
A single player game in to a MMORPG? Seriously if the game can have the battle aspects of Atlantica Online, since the game is still pretty unique in it's kind, then go for it. If you're just making another generic MMORPG, we've already gotten 500 of them.
May have been mentioned, I haven't read every comment: Bard's Tale. /thread?
Every bit of Bard's Tale had me rolling on the floor. Particularly the disc itself printed along the edge was: "For an ugly picture see other side of disc." Best hook I'd ever seen.
Fallout! Can't believe no one has said this! Or even a well written pen and paper RPG.
I agree. Fallout would make a good mmo. The VATS system is basically tab targeting the the general flow of exploration would work well in a mmo.
If you want a nutty idea. Apocalypse world. It's a table top rpg about character interactions. You couldn't make your standard mmo out of it (not enough killing), but you could make something very crazy with it. (Maybe something like a mix between a mud/mush/ and a GUI)
