Hey can yall help me im goin to get Final Fantasy XI next week, and i wanted to know which race is good and where should i start at and what jobs r good thx !
I like Elvaan, and it depends on how you want to play in order of what job to pick. If you like to fight with weapons be a warrior or monk, if you like magic pick One of the 3 mages. Personaly I like my Warrior
You can mix and match pretty much any job and race but each race leans toward a type of character.
Galka: Brutes, lots of hp very little mana, good as tanks (warriors)
Mithra: Somewhat balanced can play almost any role, highest dex and agil, great thieves, ninja, red mages, and rangers
Tarutaru: Low hp, tons of mana for magic, highest Int, make great white mages and black mages, and decent thieves.
Elvaan: Very strong, good as heavy melee (paladins, dark knights, dragoons) ::also ugly as sin:: These are not elves they are Elvaan, more of a cross between an ape and Micheal Jackson with a bad hair day.
Hume: Most balanced race, can play pretty much any class decently.
All three kingdoms have their advantages and you cant really go wrong picking one over another.
Windhurst is a city of magic (no wonder since its the home city of the Tarutaru) so tends to have the best selection of starting spells and mage equipment to buy from conquest points. Windhurst also has the best storyline missions imo.
San D'Oria and Bastok both have advantages as well. Many people think they have better starting zones for low levels. San D'Oria in particular is very close to Jeuno which is a very big boon for quests, travel, and general access to zones.
first of all.. WELCOME to FF! You will get alot of fun no matter which race/class you choose.
On the server I am playing -- Kujata WHMs are always the hot bread
If you choose to be a WHM, I suggest you go with Tarutaru. Even Elvaan has more Mind but their MP sucks. Don't get me wrong, I am playing a Elvaan WHM right now, I can cure better than a tarutaru but they can just cast a lot more. Plus WHM don't usually get hit in the group. It is a little painful to get from level 1-10 as tarutaru since solo xp is much better. But you won't be sorry.
At level25, you can raise people. I've seen WHM charge people 500gil per raise. You could make alot money that way.
Hume are average in everything so you can't really go wrong with Humes. If you are not sure what class to switch to later on, be a Hume. Otherwise, Mithras are good thiefs, Galkas are good Monks, Elvaans are good worriors, and Tarutaru are great in all mage classes.
If your one of those people who don't want to buy more than one character I would advise being Hume or Mithra. They are avrg enough in most aspects so if you decide you want to play a caster instead of melee after you've already LvLed up a warrior your not gimped as a caster. TTyL TTFN
I have some questions as well. I know that FFXI comes with the PS2 harddrive when I get it so I will play for a month at least. I am hoping that I will want to play longer. I have read posts that say only one character is needed. Here are my questions.
1: Is 1 character enough if you want to try different things? I know that can take a secondary job but how useful is it to take a race that is good fighting or casting and changing to the other.
2: Is being able to play only one race without having to pay extra worth it? I generally like to play 2 or 3 races because I like the fact that they look different. If not really worth it then Hume is what I would choose since I play that the most. I just really was kinda looking forward to the Tarutaru, Galka, and Mithra as being characters I made instead of Hume. At a dollar a character though I am not sure if worth it.
3: The one thing I don't here about on here much is the Summoner. Is the Summoner a really hard job??

One character for me was enough although I do have a Mithra thief. I never really play her though, because I am too busy focusing with my main character, a 19RDM/8WHM. As for a race that's good for fighting and turning it into a caster, unfortunately it's usually not that practical, although an Elvaan white mage is still a pretty forminable healer.

I would suggest you decied what you are planning to be first. If you want to be everything then I recommend Hume or Mithra. Their stats are fairly balanced allowing you to choose every class with little problem in the stats department. If you want to be melee focused a Galka may be the race for you, and if you plan to go primarily magic than choose Taru Taru. As for extra characters, the first month you can make extra characters for free, but make sure to delete the content ID for them by the end of your 30 day trial or you'll end up paying for them.
3: The one thing I don't here about on here much is the Summoner. Is the Summoner a really hard job??
I don't think there are many US or Canadian players that are summoners yet. A summoner is a very difficult yet rewarding job. Basicallly you need to get a group to help you find summons and then you defeat them, which will allow you to summon more. (For example, your group defeats Ifrit, you can now summon him). Every second/minute (not sure which) you loose a small amount of MP while your summon is out. You can basically control your summon and if you use your 2 hour ability I believe it makes your summon really powerful.
4: Is crafting fun and versatile?
I'm not sure, I don't like crafting usually. Most games I play I can never get into crafting, I haven't tried yet in FFXI. Basically you get crystals and use them together with other items to synthesize items (Example: Fire crystal + 4 copper ores = bronze ingot). You can join every crafting guild so you arn't restricted to one craft.z
Thanks Zohar. From what you have I would say that Tarutaru might be the best for a main character. I am interested in becoming a summoner. I will wait and see if I want another. From what I keep seeing being said is that one is enough.
One question I forgot to ask though was about Tetra Master. Does anyone know if it is any fun?
Just a couple notes on Summoner as we have several in our linkshell already. It seems a very fun class to play but you only start with the elemental pets and Carbuncle.
Getting Ifrit and the other powerful summons requires defeating them as Zohar said. Unfortunately this requires having a group of level 60+ characters to do from what I understand. You will either need very high level friends to help you or you will have to be content with Carbuncle (cute little blue bunny thing) as a pet for the first 2/3s of your characters life.
That being said, there are alot of very nice japanese players and if you make friends with some of them you may just get that high level help sooner rather then later.
As for Taru for casters they do indeed make the best whm and blm. They have the highest int so as blm they do the most damage with their nukes and the highest mana to cast alot of them. For a whm, having the most mana tends to be the most important thing rather then high mnd stat. The difference in heals based on mnd for most of the classes is so tiny its insignificant, while a Taru will have vastly more mana to cast her heal spells.
Rdm is a different story though. Since rdm can fill so many roles they often do better as Mithra or Humes imo.
EDIT: And yes, Elvaan are horridly ugly. Pretty much everyone I meet on the server I play agrees something went horribly wrong when they were making tha model while all the others are amazingly well done. Even those unfortunates playing the race usually agree.
Crafting is extremely versatile. You can be a smither, goldsmither, woodworker, fisherman, cullinarian, leatherworker, boneworker, or a weaver. Most of the items (and best items) are made through crafting. Not to mention the JSE items.
