I dont think its so much of what is 'different' but what kind of mix it brings. The shooting mechanics feel solid although I worry about the lack of variety due to the limitations of the setting, that might be a personal feeling on my part. The performance is solid and it looks amazing. The loot adds some replayability and goals to the game, as it does in every loot game. The dark zone fills the pvp niche, although, I feel that within the setting that the game has established it doesnt make a whole lot of sense.
I get a little feeling of taking advantage of the absence of Destiny on PC at least. On consoles it is a different setting and a bit different core gameplay, since its cover.
Ive found people dont really want different, they want either what a new version of they had in the past, or iterations of what they like now.

fair answer and it does somewhat validate what I thought.
There is a lot to say about good 'cadence' of a game. I feel 7 days to die is a good example of that, what makes that game great is not easy to describe but the 'candence' of the game play is very solid.
never the less for me personally I dont get the appeal of Destiny so the whole 'Destiny for the PC' rubs be a bit wrong but fair enough.
I do feel it important to say just because AAA games arent offering 'different games' doesnt mean there is not a demand. indies are different and often their sales numbers compete with AAA games on a micro version of the budget. I think people DO want different, they just arent offered it
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

The devs have said that there will be a revealed story element that explains the Darkzone and agents going rogue. Whether that explanation is convincing or not of course remains to be seen, but it is clear that they have thought about it from and rpg-standpoint in terms of the "lore". In other words, the PvP (really PvE with "vP" enabled) isn't something pasted on at the last minute. It was always meant to be integral. See: http://gamerant.com/the-division-pvp-multiplayer-details/

"We are excited to see how this new PvP method turns out. On the surface, the premise seems like a positive new direction and one that will encourage players to participate in PvP. We would have loved to see something like this in The Last of Us, for example. While the multiplayer PvP area in that game was okay, it felt very removed from the campaign, almost like an afterthought.
Dark Zones, on the other hand, are meant to feel like they’re part of the game, so we imagine the feel will be much more synchronized with the campaign. Hopefully the transition from the campaign to Dark Zones is a seamless experience on the gaming platforms. If it is, we expect the Dark Zones to feel like they add to the full experience of The Division, which will definitely keep us going back for more."

Again, I'm not offering this to get into an argument over whether this is a good idea or not. Only time will tell. But it does show the Massive has some definite ideas about what they want and are willing to gamble.
