imageCostume Prices to Be Reduced from $32 to $29

After reaching out to Daum about the costume prices in the Black Desert Online shop, the team has responded. Overall costume prices will be reduced ~10% from $32 to $29. Costume sales will continue throughout the head start period and into launch with the development team keeping a close eye on community reaction and will assess feedback received.

That's a joke, right? Reduced to $1 below the game's price? Was it so people can't say "a costume costs more than the game!" anymore?

We were calling for cuts in HALF.

With Daum just rushing the game out (and not even having a damned launch patch (yet) since CBT2 which had NUMEROUS localization issues remaining), this is looking like one company who either doesn't understand how to publish games, or doesn't give a damn and just wants as much money as possible.

I gotta admit , they can charge whatever they want , but their PR department really , really needs a clue. This is going to cause them more LoL and grief than not doing it.

They don't care what people are calling for they care about what people are spending money on.  The concept of pricing items to make them exclusive is not new or unique to BDO or even MMO's for that matter.  it's a time honored practice of companies following the rules of free market economics.  Are you better off selling a whole lot of something for a little money or a smaller number of them for a lot more?  In a lot of cases you make a whole lot more money making something feel exclusive and rare by pricing it as such than making it affordable and readily available.

Aggressive pricing, will they ever learn?

If they want to make money they will have to take a trip to the steam store, and learn about their sales practices. Making good sales will get them more money than they think they can ever make with these prices.

Just a reminder this is the price of a costume AND weapon. There are already -just costumes- in the shop for around $20. You can also buy the weapon separately.

I'm tired of people complaining about the costume prices. The pets matter more, the cost of pets should have gone down.

You guys forget. It's a privilege to play such a revolutionary game in the mmo market. And they want you to know that. :p you better be ready to bleed to play this game.

Because if you aren't then you're clearly not good enough for this game.

Not that I care about the prices, because I don't , but that's just plain funny.

Why are people being so dramatic about it. Speak with your wallets not with your tears. Don't like the prices? Don't buy them. They'll be forced to reduce them eventually. If you like the game and want to support it, buy it I guess? All in all. It's up to you whether you spend it or not and it isn't gamebreaking at all. Right now even the NA/EU game isn't even out yet so of course they want to go the expensive route first and see if it is pays out or if needed due to low influx of buyers reduce prices instead of starting cheap and upping the prices for better profits.

It's basic marketing. And nobody here seems to understand it.

That may be true of real life items when gauging their value in terms of rarity or exclusivity.  In a video game, the value of an item in terms of rarity or exclusivity is gauged in terms of how hard or difficult it was to acquire that item through in-game skill and perseverance, not by how easy it was for that player to swipe their real life credit card and pay for said item in the game's Cash Shop.

$32 to $29. 10-#*$&ing-%, really??! They need to get a clue of their market base that they're trying to sell to. League of Legend's premium costumes are $20, and those ones come with special animations per each character....on a Free2Play game! Black Desert Online is going Buy2Play in the western launch just to avoid those crazy cash shops. And yet they're not avoiding the crazy cash shops.

For $30, I think I'll buy 3 costumes and a weapon skin in GW2. Why? Better bang for my buck.

I don't understand. Why are we angry?

    This stuff is optional.

It's not a necessity for progress.

Despite the 'outrage' come launch day there will 50 times more threads complaining about not being able to get into the game because all the servers are full or there is a 5 hours queue.

SO Daum will then look as this thread and tell people to shove it because prices of costumes wont dissuade one single person from buying this game.

I have said so many time that people look for things wrong with games.

The last thing on my mind with Black Desert is how much a costume cost.
  • NickraiderNickraider Member UncommonPosts: 131
Lol... but I think people are angry because of how much costumes cost in BDO compared to other games. 10-15$ is standard for a costume from cash shop. 30$? Outrageous.

Its fine to have a few exclusive items but, not the entire cash shop. By lowering their prices by half, they could easily make twice as much than current prices and at same time make their customers a lot happier. You also forgot that Daum is just breaking into publishing in NA/EU market. Even if they were to make a little less, they would be building a brand for themselves in this market. This isn't the time to piss customers off. We all saw what happened to Trion breaking to publishing and pissing customers off. People still go out of their way to throw gasoline on Trion fires. If customers aren't happy with Daum after this, how well do you think Daum will do with their next game release?

Would've been better to at least bring it down to $25 so that the people who bought the $99 would get to choose a costume as a reward for spending that much (with the $25 worth of pearls they get from the package). Now they have to buy pearls that are likely priced in such a way that you have to use 2-5 more dollars than you wanted to like every other foreign F2P MMORPG (which makes things worse since this is B2P).

It's bad enough that they don't offer the $99 rewards for every character that you make, and you have to pick a single one for them (according to their FAQ). Which is something only foreign games do, as all western games give collectors edition items to every character you make -- even Final Fantasy XIV does this. This plus the exceedingly low amount of inventory space is getting ridiculous for a game you have to buy with the hopes that you're getting the full game without pay walls. I'd prefer P2P or F2P as opposed to B2P with a F2P model that will likely get worse as time progresses.

Should've honestly hired someone to advise them on what western audiences expect from a game they purchase. That said, I'm sure the game itself will provide enough entertainment for the $29 version. Just hope people didn't buy thinking they'd actually get something worthwhile for their characters from the bigger packages. Lacking good will is not a good way to establish yourself in a foreign market. And this 10% reduced thing just to make it so people can't say costumes cost more than the game is comedy gold.
Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

Gaming is a hobby. If you can't afford it, go get a job. Some people build model air planes, Some people ride motor cycles, Some jump out of planes. If you can't afford spending 30$ on the hobby you take interest in I say again GO GET A JOB! or find a cheaper hobby... 30$ is pretty cheap in my opinion.

It is in the $20's now!  This is pretty damn funny though.  How much are pets in the CS?  My daughter may force me to get that cute puppy.  But if the cute puppy is $29 I think I'll skip it. $20 for 1 RNG T2-3 pet ouch.

You say $30 for a costume in a video game is pretty cheap?

Is your name, by any chance, Bill Gates?

That is truly a ridiculous price for "one" costume.  Most video games don't even cost that much.

I don't really think it's about that. Sure, there are people who should get "better jobs" and whine and moan and complaining about having to pay but raising prices significantly on a cosmetic makes me wonder where their heads are.
