Gorgon is decent. Still very very rough around the edges. While the exploration and stuff is great, the combat in Gorgon is horrid. Not sure what you mean by "Wasting" time.
The target audience did support it. Over 250k was sold, and could have been higher had it not been such a disaster that people knew about pre-launch. I was so excited for it, but could never run it. Constant crashes, hitching, and performance issues were the norm.

I bought a new video card to be able to run the game. This game could have been so much more had it not been mishandled by the creator.
To people who enjoyed Vanguard and EQ is would recommend trying Project Gorgon game instead of wasting time with private servers :P
I played Gorgon for about 6 months. Not a bad start to a game but it never seemed to improve,it only got worse and instead if improving,he kept working on new areas.I figured it would take him another 5+ years to get the game to where i would brag about it.Besides combat imo is too restrictive, you feel like you are not in control and could just press auto resolve for each fight.
I will explain in a very simple fashion.ability A 10 dmg B-20 dmg C-40 dmg D 28 dmg done no more mana/energy.No matter what sequence you use in combat you still run out the same, dmg feels always the same. You might as well just have 1 button that says ...yoru doing 238 dmg then you are done, wait and hope you don't die until you regen enough to use one more ability but that is too slow the Boss regens faster lol.
Most games have glaring flaws,i often wonder what the developer was thinking.VG was a really good game as far as clones go but still did some things that really irked me the wrong way.Not sure i could get into anymore,i no longer questing or any hand holding.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
What I still do not get, is how fans can get together, afford to build and run an emulator for VG...
and yet D-bag can not just "here it is, up and running already" while letting whoever wants to emulate it, deal with looking after it.
At the moment, order of what I am looking forward to...
Pantheon RotF being released
Saga of Lucimia being released (kinda iffy about the first person only thing, but I see where they are coming from with the immersion aspects, kinda like Thief had where you moved in your seat to look around corners)
Vanguard SoH Emulator up and running
After those, the MMO industry as it currently sits, can go **** itself

yep, i was a huge fan during development and experienced the same thing. i wanted to play it so bad but it was just unplayable for me.
I could play it ok, but i got to like mid level and there was absolutely no one around so i lost interest, never to regain it. I don't even remember the classes and areas there have been so many games since, some sort of blood mage or something i was.
I fought through the glitches and disconnects, worked my butt off and was the first to build houses on my server thanks to my awesome guildmates feeding me materials daily. but sadly the population kept falling and soon my guildies all quit, and being alone I was left with no choice but to follow their lead. RIP VG
Vanguard was great. A couple years after it released, I put it on a SSD drive and it worked great.
(Always let MMO's bake for a year or two before playing)
Eventually it turned into the same raiding mentality: we're gonna do dungeon X, so follow orders and we'll all get through this ok. That's what killed DAOC for me, ToA trials.
But Vanguard's crafting, fishing, and diplomacy set it apart. An inspired game, if a bit unfinished.
The necro was maybe the best pet class of all time.

Does this emulator actually work yet or are the NPCs all still broken?

I loved Vanguard but lets be honest, by the time a decent emulator got up and running for it we will all be playing Pantheon which is looking to mix the best of EQ and VG with some modern flare.

Last update was 06/20/2015. Other than that I have no clue.
The emulator is being worked on daily. I think they just kind of left the webpage to die but if you go into the developer forums and even ones of this websites biggest competitors you will see they post all the time. There is some really big progress right now.
