EVE is "Real" - Or why it is the only MMORPG for those who play

KyleranKyleran Member LegendaryPosts: 43,975

This is a good article which well describes what makes one of the best (and perhaps few "true") virtual world MMORPGs ever made.

Only posting the summary, but read the entire piece if you've ever wondered what draws players to EVE or considered playing but skipped due to things you've "read" about which cast the game in a negative light.

"EVE is real

In the title of this piece, I said that EVE Online had spoiled every other MMO for me. And while the factors discussed above — perma-loss, the player-driven economy, the community, owning your home, becoming history — are all part of that, I think that they combine to form a sum greater than their parts. For all that it’s just pixels on a screen and data on a server, EVE is real, and what you do matters, in a way that handing in quests or running dungeons in other games can never approach. Returning to other MMOs, even one as polished as World of Warcraft, reduces you to the level of a trained rat, obediently pushing a button to receive treats. The challenge is entirely superficial — press these buttons in this order, don’t stand in the fire — whereas EVE asks questions of you that get to the heart of who you really are. What are you willing to risk? What are you ready to fight for? And what will you do to reshape history?

In space, everybody can hear you scream"

I get why people like EVE, respect what it's achieved and I had decent time playing but the combat just weighs it down after awhile.  It just becomes unfun to play.  It's how I feel about Black Desert, too.  I get what they're doing and understand why people like it but I just didn't like the combat.  You can have the best systems and virtual world but if I don't enjoy the combat, then I won't play, at least not for long.

Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.

The only thing becoming history is eve. Game is steadily loosing players and the devs are desperate enough to add buying skill points with real money (pay to win) to cover their losses.

The thing that's real about eve is you can use your credit card to max out your skill points (which take what 20 years total training time without using your credit card??)

First, this post was about the article and yet no one can seem to stop with the "EVE is dying" meme's every time someone makes an EVE post.

Second, CCP is not incorporated and is therefore not beholden to the idiotic whims of shareholders.  This means they can do what's best for the game and not what's best for investors like every other major MMO on the market.  So the plug will never be pulled on the account of "Didn't make our investors as much money as they wanted".

Third, EVE will still be around if there are half as many players on every night as there are now.  When I started playing the game there were maybe maybe 5K players online during US prime time.  Now we're sitting at around 30-35 on during peak hours.  Sure it's not the game's high of 55-60, but the game survived for many years at 10-15K.

EVE isn't going anywhere, sorry to bust your bubble.

That being said, I read this article last week when it popped up on reddit which are the only game forums I can view from work.  I thought the article perfectly explains the seemingly un-explainable attraction of EVE to those of us who love it.

roflmao....sorry but the part about wondering what makes Eve players tick did bring a chuckle out of me.

I pretty much know what makes every gamer tick,it varies a lot from gamer to gamer but MOST fof the time gamer's are playing games for extremely shallow reasons.

Eve is a game that on paper is a "mildly decent start" but only on paper. The timeing and budget meant the release was absolutely horrible, not even close to 25% of a quality game ,missing way too much i nway of systems, assets, design just real bad.

SO you figure ok the timing that was good was that it had literally no competition, similar to Wow who was gathering NEW players versus no other competition.Well sorry EQ2 released like a week earlier but most kids were already brainwashed into Wow for Christmas.SO the two long standing games with longevity really had it EASY mode.Release Eve right now ,yeah still little competition but i say it would flop badly ,most focus is on SC right now.

If SC takes over and Eve loses it all,it is their own fault, they have not put nearly enough effort back into the game considering the millions they have rolled in over the years.IMO Eve is still barely 25% of a game,it would need 2-3 years of solid development to get it up to snuff, but no excuse they had way more than 2-3 years and way more than enough money, just really bad management.

Nice article, but it's not anything new that I haven't already read from other players on these very forums over the years. So the guy explains the gameplay, which after 13 years pretty much every one who follows MMOs or has played EVE in the past already knows about, then claims that is why he and others play EVE.  Reading about EVE gameplay and how that's the reason why others play is the same as reading someone describe WoW gameplay and how that's the reason why they play.

EVE Online not having purple items, busty underage women avatars with bunny ears or epic mounts is a good thing. For us, playing EVE. We don't want that hand holding themepark fantasy stuff.

My point was, not all avatar games have to be bunny ears and hand holding.
I have tried Eve and I really like the concept, but I also like to play an avatar, not spaceship.

True, not all avatar based games are that way.  Most of them are though, that's pretty undeniable.  Just an unfortunate side effect of the dumbing down of the genre.  It didn't use to be this way.  I would venture to say that the early fantasy MMO's were as hard or harder than EVE.

I can completely understand your not wanting to have a spaceship as an avatar.  That's a matter of taste and there's nothing more pointless than arguing matters of personal taste.

I can agree to all of that :). Let's hope there are better days for us older mmo players :).

EVE has faults to be sure, and many valid reasons not to like it for some.

But those who play look past such distractions in order to focus on carving their way in the EVE universe, which is the rich and rare beauty of it.
