Anybody know people who watch/follow MMORPGs but don't play?

alzooalzoo Member UncommonPosts: 17
Do any of you know anybody who watches or follows MMORPGs but don't play?  If so, I'd love to hear more about them...
-Do they watch someone they know, or watch on Twitch or Youtube?
-What games do they watch?
-What do they find interesting about it?
-Have the played other MMORPGs in the past?

Took a ‘short break’ from MMORPGs after the initial excitement about the launch of Ultima Online wore off.  Beginning to reacquaint myself with the genre in anticipation of Chronicles of Elyria (friend code E1E266).

A some  of people I used to play with back in day watch.  They feel like MMO left them behind.

I prefer to watch various games of different types instead of playing sometimes.  It's mostly because playing can quickly feel tiring to me.  Perhaps because I invested so much energy playing through exhaustion when I was younger.  Even single player games can make me feel tired.  Watching someone else play is more relaxing as it requires no effort.  I guess it depends on what you are looking for.

Sounds to me like you're unhealthy/overweight. Healthy people don't feel tired until their head hits the pillow.

Not sure what you can do though if playing video games is too much effort for you. How do you exercise or work a job for that matter if you find gaming exhausting?

I keep tabs on most mmo's but really only play EvE. Even my interest in EvE is slipping and I find myself playing less and less. So even though I dont play most, I still find alot of todays mmo's interesting and entertaining enough to watch gameplay of.

Currently Darkest Dungeon and Armello are consuming the majority of my time. Maybe when Masters of Orion comes down in price ill scoop that up too

Actually I'm about 125 pounds and my last physical (recently) the doctor said I'm really healthy.  I exercise everday and usually have a smoothy with a variety of different fruits, vegetables, and nuts.  Most of the time I don't feel tired during the day.  Actually when I'm doing something physical I feel less tired.  Even when I'm browsing the web or writing a program for fun I don't generally feel tired or drowsy.  It seems to happen mostly when I play video games.

I have lots of friends that are ex EVE players who still follow the game and watch the annual tournament, but they don't play anymore.

Personally, I can't understand watching someone else play a game when I could be playing it.  I understand watching, say, NFL Football because none of us are going to be able to walk onto AT&T Stadium and play a pickup game with Dallas.

However, I can download and play a MOBA any time I like, so watching someone play it when I could be playing it is just like... ehhhh? Huhhh? to me.  If I want to learn a specific tactic, then I'll turn on someone who is good at it, watch how they do it, then get right back to playing.  But spending hours watching other people do something I could be doing?  Yeahhhh, no.

I know plenty that watch MOBAs and survival pvp games.

    Lots that watch Minecraft.

Quite a few that watch single player games.

Mmorpgs - very few, they have a low watchability factor
That is true and I think a lot of that has to do with quests and how they are setup.  I just watched a few videos on project1999 and it was interesting as there were no quests.  Just people running around an interacting with each other.

These forums have quite a few folks who "follow" the MMORPG genre but admittedly don't play them. (or not very often)

As I only enjoy EVE these past few years I'm probably in this same category, as it lies outside of anything found in modern MMOs.

I enjoy reading and posting on the forums, and keep my eye on a few if the more interesting titles.

After all, one day I'll probably want to strap on my broadsword and venture into a new MMORPG adventure.

(seeing as every time I try to do this in real life, outside of the local Renaissance festival, I get the strangest reactions from others)

For those who do enjoy watching MMOs, I'd love to hear more details about what games you enjoy watching (or following in other ways) and how you watch.  Do you watch friends play, watch specific streamers, visit specific websites, etc.?

Also, I've heard a number of people (not just in this thread) say that MMOs aren't very watchable.  What do you think makes them that way?  Part of what got me interested in this whole line of questioning is the thought that upcoming games like Revival and Chronicles of Elyria are building in mechanisms that should support the emergence of all sorts of interesting storylines.  Unlike single player or themepark MMOs, that should theoretically lead to an almost infinite amount of watchable/followable content.  I'm interested to hear what people think about that idea.

Thanks for the tip.  Wouldn't sleep apnea make me feel tired all the time?  I only feel like games make me tired.  My theory is that it's the combination of stress on the eyes, amount of attention required, and the non stop action.  I think part of the problem is I spend most of my day looking at computers screens/displays.  It tires my eyes out.  Watching something does cause my eyes to work as hard.  It also doesn't cause my muscles to becomes tense because I'm not having to react to things happening in the game.  I often find myself becoming tense when playing games.

I "USED" to be that person.
The reason is i was all in on FPS's,to me it was fast, intense and skillful, calculating and just used a lot of strategy.

I was always asked to play EQ1 by a few friends ,i paid attention,i followed the scene  but never wanted to play it.I started playing single player rpg's a long time ago, example Wizardry and Might N Magic and Ultima but just never saw a MMORPG that i wanted  to play until FFXI.

After FFXI i was so impressed and just blown away by some ideas,i decided to try many others just in case i was missing something. Now i don't really have a preference because imo ALL the games are just badly designed, they do some things well others really bad.

My fave that were FPS's have now tried to add in cheap rpg mechanics ,like level up and earn currency to buy new weapons, even questing.I do not like my genres mixed into each other,i am a purist at heart. My RPG's now are trying to add in fps elements as well as many other goofy ideas,so basically developers have ruined both genres i love.

Yep same issues here when working on computers all day, it also affected my driving with long distances. For years i used all kind of excuses why it was happening, then one day I finally took a friends advice and found out I stopped breathing during the night so i never hit Rim sleep. Now i can be online all day and drive with no problems, Rim sleep is so important and it also was one of the reasons for my heart attack. Just go get checked out and find out for sure.

Agreed, I don't have sleep apnea, I have insomnia, yet either can lead to serious heart problems especially if your work entails a lot of sitting down, or your leisure activities. Too many think "I'm not overweight and I exercise so I have no worries in this regard".. bad call. Especially if you feel tired after doing it. Or get tense... that tension in your arms can be heart related. (tightness)

I weigh 145 at 5'7 not over weight and fit, vegetarian for years, Skater, etc.. Heart attack at 30 another at 32 quad bypass at 34. Mostly from stress and lack of sleep.

I'm sure sleep plays into things a bit, but for the most part I get 8 hours of restful sleep.

My heart is usually OK these days.  When I was younger I ate a lot of junk food an didn't exercise much.  I often had stomach aches, lacked sleep, and had some measure of heart disease I'm sure.  Over the last 10 years I've been fairly healthy by changing my diet, getting more exercise, sitting down less, and changing positions far more often.  My heart never feels clogged or constricted unless I start eating some bad food like cookies or doughnuts.  I just feel that playing games is a high intensity activity.  You have to really concentrate all the time you are playing.  It makes all your muscles tense waiting to react to things that happen in game.  I'm sure part of it is just that I'm older and have a bit less energy to waste.  When you are just going around doing physical activities or doing work on a computer you aren't required to concentrate and focus so fully on what you are doing as when you are playing games.  I do notice that sitting down for a long period of time makes parts of your body sore and irritated.  It's why I often stand up and walk around at times or sit in a reclined position that is more natural.

Ahh yes, that's a fantastic project.  I'm really glad he put so much time and effort into producing this as someone who has been around the game since 2005.  There was a lot that I had forgotten that I had forgotten.

I even got a chance to talk to him a bit to help answer some things concerning Lotka Volterra and some other early alliances that I was heavily involved in at the time.

I watch significant amounts of EQ1, Eve Online, and others. My watch time is far greater than my play time. I simply lost interest in making progress in video games, and watch videos of them to pass the time between chores and work.

I follow MMORPGs, mainly those in development, and currently I don't play any. I don't really watch other people play, thats something I've never really understood (in life, not just games - I don't watch any sports either).

I just consider this product research though - I'm looking for an MMORPG "home" but have been disillusioned with the genre for a few years now, so before I get sucked in to another one I make sure I do my research first, ensure it has all the long-term features I want. Sadly, no MMO has met my needs recently, but I live in hope!

Makes about as much sense as watching other people watch films.
