Environment and world variety?

VolgoreVolgore Member EpicPosts: 3,872
Hello everyone!

I noticed with about every stream i've watched or even screenshot i saw, there is always this green-brownish, coastal forest area with some trees, flora etc. throughout all the player's level.

What i am totally missing is a variety in areas here, like i.e. a wasteland, desert, snowy mountain range, a dark forest or whatever different themes usually come with "zones" in other games.
Same goes for castles, forts, caves, mob settlements etc. that usually make for iconic locations in mmorpgs you would want to re-visit with every twink and love to hang out at for evenings or make you interested in the story behind it and what happened there.
In vanilla WoW terms that would be locations like the Black Rock, Tyr's Hand, Jintha Alor and many other POIs.
Before somebody says "you are looking for a themepark, this is but a sandbox"..remember that EvE also has these things.

So, does the map change at all or is it the same "connect outposts and take the mainroad with your wagon" world everywhere?

Thanks for your input.

The world is very varied! But not in the WoW way, but in a realistic way. So no, there won't be a "snow area" and then a "lava area".

Once desert get in then it will have a higher variance of theme.

Well the current five regions are Calpheon, Balenos, Serendia, Mediah, and Valencia.
For Calpheon it has forests, mountains, plains, and coastal regions. Balenos is mostly coastal with some plains. Serendia has a swampy area. Mediah and Valencia are mostly desert and canyons with some vegetation.

I am personally mostly dissapointed with the size of the gameworld at release...

all that great detail and realisme does come at a price..

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Also, there are videos on youtube showing the desert region of the game and another video showing snow fall with the landscape slowly turning to a winter wonderland. Then melting when it stops.

    Snow 1 :

    and

    Snow 2 :

The desert ones are all over youtube. You can search that one. I'm going back to play the game.

    Cheers!!

It was my understanding the world had seasons, or was that just a beta test?

The huge regions are yet to be added alikes to the Desert. Valencia. The most likely mountain dwellings of the dwarves and their respective region. And the elves with their unique region. And Mediah... Lots left. Including the big sea update that will introduce bigger seas, true ship combat, monster hunting at sea, and so forth.

Yes. When snow falls in DFO, it actually changes the landscape in REAL TIME. Snow sticks. Something no 3D MMORPG has done to this day to my knowledge.

AC1 had seasons, but the snow would be patched in during downtime, and would not change during the next 6 months. In DFO, snow comes and goes like in "real life".

Realistic weather before DFO. Mind blown!

Thank you for your input everyone.
I also saw that people are still discussing wether or not the current US/NA map is the same as the KR map. Some say it is, while others say it's only 60%, 80% and so on.

Well the game was obviously lacking but they recently added in two complete opposite zones to remedy the situation, one being all desert like and one all cold, frigid. Most of the game like other games is just a bunch of long walks through brush and trees.
As to the two regions from the Korean game,i have no idea why we would not see the same game other than to speculate it will not be free or perhaps they are re thinking their idea behind theThieves city that is all out pvp and does not like good Karma players because imo that was a really bad idea.

Only game to my knowledge that had true seasons were Dark & Light, snow fell in realtime and more it snowed more snow on the ground to the brink at some places it was hard to walk, so you used your shield as a snowboard when going downhill.

Ah yes, the infamous "Dark & Light" !

The game that first introduced us to the concept of massively over-promised indie MMO fail !
It even had shades of scam...

DFO looks nice. I never bothered with it as it was PvP FFA and all I just dismissed it .Nice looking.

BDO world is not that big then but it does have nice detail.
