Not for me, have never been a fan of the Wild West.
Perhaps its part of being British, but we just don't have any equivalent landscape in our countries or any equivalent timeperiod in our history where we had "frontiers" etc, so there is nothing to connect me to the Wild West. I just don't like deserts / scrubland and the yellow/orange colour palette.
However, if it was built well then I might play. We've never had a AAA sandbox MMO, so if the first one happened to be set in the Wild West then I'd probably give it a go just to see what it's like.
I can't think of a single good reason to make a cowboy game, let alone an MMO, and a thousand reasons why they shouldn't, bad taste just doesn't even come close.
You're right the British were never an expansionist empire. You may want do some reading about your country in Africa/India and elsewhere. It makes the Wild Wild west look pretty mild.
@Phry while I agree the very sensitive nature of the Native American's and the horrible way they have been and are being treated is a very real world issue and not one I would want to explore in any type of game I think (someone smarter than me) could present it in such a way as to not be offensive or derogatory.
As far as bad taste, that is just your spin on it, there have been wild west games, none that come to mind that were amazing hits but they have existed in some shape for awhile now without offending anyone that has come forward.
Again, the theme does not spark my interest much, but I think the; "hair on fire omg the feels" reaction is a more than a bit overboard.
Yes, the wholesale slaughter of 100 million+ people is tame. You're spot on.
This discussion is stupid anyway if you don't even like Wild West why post here at all? And as i said above we could get around all of these problems with a alternate reality Weird West setting easily all of this stuff simply would have never even happened in that world.
Sadly, I think some of the responses to this thread are evidence of why we haven't seen a quality pure wild west MMORPG. It seems people want to add steam punk, post apocalypse or other fantasy elements to it, which would take away from the whole point of a "wild west" theme.
I would love to see a "wild west" mmo that lets you create a character and choose your own destiny. Something akin to pre-NGE SWG. I think a sandbox game where you could choose from things like being a rancher, cowboy, lawman, saloon owner/business man, railroad tycoon, frontiersman, trapper/hunter, blacksmith, courier, outlaw or entertainer/performer etc. would be great. That would be a game world that I'd like to experience.

Let's face it western as a genre is very dry and boring it wouldn't attract enough people to make it viable if anything the Weird West approach (which is a valid genre on it's own read the links Anderswelt posted above) would open that up for a lot of new possibilities to make the game way more interesting then it would be without that, i personally wouldn't want to play a western game without supernatural elements.

Sounds very boring as a MMO. May be a short, nicely scripted single player game (like Call of Juarez). But a MP game? I am not convinced.
im not too sure if it will appeal to me.... but then again i wouldnt mind giving it a try if there is a actual game. i still like sci-fi fantasy type more

What kind of gameplay would there be in the span of 4 hours for each of those? A lot of those sound more like something you voluntarily role play but not be fostered by the game.
but every one knows Americans are most ignorant hypocrites in entire world .
um, have you actually looked at other cultures?
We might be one of the largest and most front and center because of the media, but the world is full of cultures who are "ignorant hypocrites" when they are at their worst.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I remember riding through the desert in Red Dead Redemption multiplayer on my PS3 and ambushing groups of players doing missions in the canyons. Man, I was such a di**, but it was really fun.
Something like RDR as an MMORPG would be awesome and if done well an instant buy.
RDR only thing that could pull this off, it would still suck though. People are not looking for themes outside of fantasy or sci fi, they are looking for freedom and purpose.

Few countries don't have a murky history, the UK certainly has a history that may be considered somewhat murkier than most, but pretending they didn't happen, or making it 'sanitised for entertainment' is equally questionable, it just so happens that the 'wild west' is one of those questionable periods of history, sanitising it for entertainment, is imo, without question, bad taste. Of course if you sanitise history for entertainment, you can probably persuade people it never really happened.
I would hope that we never forget that period in (U.S.) history that is something that does not need to be repeated. However, we are going a bit far afield at this point.
As far as your opinions on taste I guess we just have to agree to disagree.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.
Fine, you're not convinced. But 138 others in this thread seem to be, so I hope you're okay with that. A couple of hours in something like Call of Juarez is fine, but many MMO gamers want to build upon an experience that lasts five years or longer.
really? Is that why 80% of them leave a game after 30 days?
I highly doubt there are many players left who want 5 years + long games. Why bother when there are so many choices to switch to?
It is an even better setting than fantasy, if you ask me. Think real hard about a fantasy book, and then compare it to any fantasy MMORPG. No resemblance. Why? Because in a good fantasy story/setting. there's not 1000's of glowing demigods with elf ears running around killing all the wild animals hoping to get somehow 'stronger' from it (leveling up) --- Fantasy games are just dull now and not even a shadow of what true fantasy worlds feel like.
Now, take the Wild West.... expansion... industry.... growth.... battles..... business.... trading.... adventuring... blacksmiths (and other legendary trades) etc
Perfect setup for an MMORPG. Also, wouldn't seem nearly as ridiculous seeing an in-game boomtown BOOMING with a bunch of players shooting eachother or running around on horses or hanging a thief in the town square... and such.
Point being, yes. I'm fully a supporter of this and still wondering when it'll happen.
((( anyone who doesn't think it's an appropriate setting, i challenge you to watch the series Deadwood and still see if you have that opinion afterwards. The gritty world is perfect for the asshat-ery of internet people.)))
My answer is no, but it has little to do with elves. If you remove the romanticized image of the American wild west, you're left with a corruption-rife, expansionistic portrayal of a society's foreign incursion. This scenario plays out to some extent in just about every major mmo. Crafting an entire mmo around the historical idea is limiting. At least, for example, Wildstar takes the premise and adds a half-dozen more concepts to make for a more original setting.
I would have been happy if they ported Red Dead Redemption to PC
I knew there was a reason I have not played this game yet.
The problem about Wild West games .. is that there are limited room to develop skills and abilities, unless you go steampunk or fantasy western.
Sure, you can have 10 different skills with guns .. but it boils down to you shoot a little better, and do more damage. The combat design/gameplay design is very much restricted by the setting.
So good western games like RDR or Call of Juarez .. juiced it up with characters, narrative and stories. You don't need a MMO to do any of those.
A wild west MMORPG would be more about taming the wilds, exploring the frontiers, establishing colonies and towns and creating trade routes between the coasts.
So a flat progression system where what you do with skills rather then how many or how long you spend on skills would be more important.
In my mind a sort of tailored '7 days to die' approach would work great as a setting for an MMORPG.
Well yes if high quality of course i would play it.There are no barriers in my gaming, only if done right and done well. It would actually be kind of cool because instead of recent Korea type spam combat,we would have 6 shooters that need reloading and make for way more interesting combat.I think i could actually get into pvp in that case. We would of course have to craft everything and have ammo "realistic ammo" not hi flying miniguns with unlimited ammo. Also have npc sheriffs. Not sure what kind of death system i could handle, obviously we can't have perma death but maybe a KO system and some sort of injury penalty that needs medical attention by doctors that have varied skills and costs. Yeah come to think of it would be cool if done right. Saloons.getting drunk, gambling outlaws that could be NPC's that move throughout the game world ,town to town causing trouble. Stage coaches and robberies and make shift banks and hired guns "npc's",food crafting ,camp fires no electric stoves, lumbering and building houses.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
