Black Desert Online News - A Game of Knowledge

This week, I’d like to tell you all a little story. It’s a story of treasure maps, hidden caves, idiot workers, and an imp named Red Nose. Black Desert Online continues to utterly grab me by the Ghoulies, and I’m finding out just how refreshing it is to play an MMORPG that doesn’t prescribe to preconceived notions of what an MMO should be. Pearl Abyss did things their own way, made the game they wanted to make, and while it’s not perfect is sure is refreshing.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oh hey, another person that is "only level 19" because of all the myriad things to do. Each time I log in thinking "will this be the day that I'm distracted by another game" I end up playing the entire time in BDO. From fishing, farming, trading, progressing a little on quests...maybe combat, maybe not.
I need to learn cooking to manage my pet better, and I love my horse and his (they have genders for breeding wow!) quirky personality.
I still cannot figure out why I haven't hit choice paralysis, perhaps it's because there's no pressure to make that choice. Fun game. I'm enjoying it.

"Speaking of going on, I’ve spent over 50 hours in Black Desert as of this writing and I’m still level 19, and I’ve just barely started doing quests and exploring Heidel – the game’s first big city."

Exactly the same for me :) Each time I want to lvl I just keep being distracted by some gathering, some funny quests etc etc. I tried the game without any expectations and now I'm hooked!

I have 230 hours in game (although every night I sleep/work I get a dozen afk fishing hours) and have a 6 chars so far at 18/13/12/11/10/10. I have decided to take it slowly, I have every Amity almost maxed in the first area, and all of my houses purchased there so far that I can. I will move my entire family to the next area together, as only my 18 Tamer has even left Olvia so far

Must say I am hooked as well. Haven't had a lot of time but this game has me excited to turn my computer on again!

So far I've spent $90 - 30 for base game and 60 for pearls. I just have one more alt to get to level 10 and I'll have my entire family (all 9 characters) in Veila. For now two of them will be mules until the new classes come out I'll just use their energy to pump up nodes. If I could only quit getting distracted.......but probably will side track into learning how to grow stuff tonight and get back to my noobie (hehe by a whole 5 levels) stuck in Olvia on another day.

Honestly about as lost and filled with wonder as I was the first month of SWG's launch.

Hohoho, petty non-veteran players. I am 20 hours in and level 15. That's a better rate than 50 hrs for 19. I really enjoy the Dark Energy. It's egging me on to be mean.

I loved that treasure map quest and its follow up. Once I had the pieces together I expected to find something obvious just sitting there waiting for me as is usually the case in most MMOs. I won't spoil it for others but, no, that was not he case.

I like almost everything about BDO, the fishing, crafting, combat (which is awesome), Gfx, Weather, exploration, the map (yes! even the map!), the node management system, housing etc. If they keep up with new areas like it sound like they are, ill be hooked for a long time. That said I wish they would make the market like other games, I get the point of price setting but im a free market kind of guy. Also player to player trading would be good, but again, I get the idea behind not having it.

I'm only lv26 so far. I'm getting side tracked in the game way too often, but that's a good thing.

Alot of people are taking it slow with this game and love to figure out stuff instead of rushing to max. level.
I take that as a big plus for the game and all these innovations and new systems Pearl Abyss came up with seem to work for the players.
While you can argue if BDO takes the genre to the new level we've been waiting for for 6+ years, you can't deny that Pearl Abyss at least tried and perhaps even reached the goal halfway. We can't really say the same about 90% of the games released in the last ten years.

What keeps the game from becoming the blockbuster it should be are some questionable concepts that leave you wondering how they made their way into an otherwise well thought out product.

Also thumbs up to Bill for the article. I liked alot about it, but as a "selfproclaimed worst critic of Bill as a reviewer" i can't go into details for obvious reasons ;)

The game has so much potential, but it just pulls me put all the time because of dumb dexisions on the developers part. I know these complaints have been talked about to death, but the fact that you spend all this time crafting a character creator that allows you to truely customize youe character then you neglect to create any unique armor obtainable in the game so everyone looks the same. Yeah you have costumes on the pearl shop, but each class only had 2 or 3 and for males they all share a costume limiting you even further. Add to it the terrible dye system, it's like Daum wants to do everything to prevent me from really getting into my character.

I think what bothers me the most by this is that you have like 3 armor models for each class and the one I have right now for my warrior has very obvious clipping issues. I mean if you're going to slack off on the armor styles you better make each piece perfect. Come on guys.

It's a shame because I like the game otherwise, but for someone like me gets into searching for unique looking gear to deck my character out in this game is seriously lacking. I don't think I've ever played a game that has done it's gear system so poorly.

The only complaint I have so far, is that I don't have enough damn time to play it.

I like the game, although I'm not going to like endgame at all. RNG gear progression and PVP that is disgustingly reliant on gear.

You know I read on the forums about a guy who leveled to max in a few days and played a warrior toon no less. I had to make a comment on how weak that warrior was, with that being said let me explain. If you go into this game with a rush attitude then you don't need to play this game. A warrior has to depend on health and strength and the only way you get these is by
    1. Walking around for hours upon hours with a huge pack on your back (which I do all the time)
    2. Eat tons and tons of food that has a long cool down (this is the first game ever I invested in cooking)

That being said that warrior does not have neither of these skill at their full potential and all he will be doing
now, if he truly wanted to have a warrior toon, is back track. It becomes boring when you have to Pack walk everyday (that's when it becomes grinding).

I must say I have been waiting for any type of sandbox theme game for a very long time. No rush for the end and I am not even leveling my toon fast at all. I have been at the same level for days now, but my str and health is all good. I may get in a level every 4 to 5 days and I am okay with that.

I'm surprised how much I'm enjoying BDO. I was really put off by the terrible voice acting at first, but the overall depth of the game is very compelling. In fact, I've found myself eager to log in each day.

Also some of the changes are really strange in the western version - energy cost for processing? Why? Game changed to B2P model without changing the cash shop or other systems to reflect that it's a B2P game - very strange. Reduced XP rates in PvE in the western version - but they didn't offset the karma penalties to compensate at higher levels IMO. Again it seems poorly thought out. Yes 1% is less for us - but this doesn't scale at higher levels at all - the math is off

I was also worried about some of the changes to the NA/EU version, but now that I am actually playing the game it all feels good (although I haven't got to 45 yet so not sure how the pvp changes will be).

One thing I disagree with you on here though is the cash shop. The cash shop is significantly different in the NA/EU version - basically everything that was really "p2w" was taken out and we can't sell cash shop items in the AH. Maybe that doesn't mean much to you, but to me its like night and day.

Armors will change your characters appearance, but not drastically. The thing that is confusing you is that when you don't have any armor equipped, you still look like you do. The early level armors look exactly like your "default" no armor look.

And then u have 3-4 costumes that can be bought.

Innovative? Deep? Interesting? Tottaly yes but i consider appearence a huge aspect of any MMORPG, it deflects your individuality as a character in this world

    Huge..huge turn off for me.

People dont want to look the same for 50 levels and u force them to buy a costume that the hilarious thing is that its the same recycled model more or less

I would've no issue paying a high sub fee per month for a very good game, because it is a good game it has fresh mechanics and focuses in completely different aspect than your average MMO.As William murphy said u can relate it to EVE.

But this armor system? Its too atrocious for me to keep playing, people want to look different and unique

I have to agree with some of the above posters, the lack of cosmetic character options within the game has been a huge turn off to me as well, I put in a ticket over a week ago about another issue and I can further report that the customer service seems to not exist? When there is no customer service there is no game at least in my eyes that was the final straw.

I've been in since Conq pack early access and I'm only 20 - Everytime I log in I have to collect my thoughts and decide what i'm going to do first... The shear amount of different things to do is outstanding and at the same time, sometimes overwhelming..

    Loving it... £100 well spent...

I am absolutely engrossed with the game so far. My Sorc just dinged 25th while I was fishing. When the servers come back up I'll fish some more, then go thwack some animals for meat so I can make pet food. I'll probably cook up some beer for my workers, then go explore a mountain and mine up some ore and rocks while I'm at it. Gotta support my tool makers.

Then again I might get distracted and do something else. Might get caught up in a RP session.

    Gods I love this game.

Nice article. Been playing since begining and I am only lvl 21. Right now I am packing my stuff to move to Heidel from Velia and I am already missing Velia,
That says a lot about this game, the last time I got attached to areas of a game was with Everquest.
Never thought I would get this feeling again with a game, I am glad I was wrong and I am glad I bought this game.
I intend to play it very slowly so I can savour its amazing content.
