Colin Johanson, responding to industry
friends and the fantastic Guild Wars 2 community, has penned a lengthy
and heartfelt letter of farewell on the GW2 Reddit. He speaks of coming
to ArenaNet, his time while there, development of Guild Wars 2 and much
more. It is a lovely letter and one that brings his term with ArenaNet
to a close.

Seriously, the ArenaNet from GW1 to GW2 changed so much, they might as well not even be the same company.

Some people just want the exact same thing with a new paintjob. I'd call it boring but maybe it's cause they feel safe or they have difficulties grasping new concepts.

I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.

He wasn't alone the other culprit that destroyed the game especially in the loot and rewards department when we kept telling them something was wrong is their Nexon appointed economist called John Smith if anyone's absence should be celebrated it should be John's!

HOT brought more difficulty and tears to many who just can't wrap their finger on their class mechanics. Folks struggling to kill mobs, lol.
Living world 2 was pretty entertaining and they did quite a few things right with it. Though the expansion took too long to get out, and had very little content. Not to mention irritating Guild Wars Lore fans that Elona and Cantha weren't a part of it.
It's little wonder why NCsoft said that Guild Wars 2 HoT sales were poor and far below what they expected them to be -- only doubling income for a major expansion in a single quarter over the previous. They mentioned analyzing the problems that were caused by this since the game is still profitable in the hopes it will become even more so, and I believe this is a first step.
Though it would be unfair of me to blame the face of the game for the missteps of it as a whole, despite his title within it. They (ANET) seems to be trying to break away from NCsoft what with the whole independent attempts going on right now, but as a whole they need significant revisioning of the game as a whole.
My suggestion would be Guild Wars 3 -- making it more true to the original. That or making an expansion for the first. If neither of those are viable, then significant changes in the next expansion to make the raiding the hard content and changing classes to incorporate fantasy roles such as a legitimate knight / tank that can take a beating, healers and DPS that can hold their own in most Dynamic events without having to rely on an empty map to help them. Quite possibly drastic measures when it comes to the combat system and targeting. Taking a note from Blade & Soul in terms of combat and combos, or even BDO when it comes to the speed of their combat. Fractals can be the second hardest content, followed by new dungeons that have a hard and normal setting. Though with great changes require massive marketing to push it and regain the favor / interest of the market.
Im glad GW2 didnt become what all these whiners wanted, another wow clone with GW lore/visuals.
Looking forward to the next expansion.
Man i loved GW1- it was such a fantastic game- from the story to the combat- from the artwork to the skills.
5vs5vs5vs5 wich mmo did that ever before? yea right--> team up all against china.
what a great time.
Don't forget the "MMO manifesto" sitting on your desk before leaving!
You guys want to play a game like GW1? Then go play GW1.
Well I hope that his next endeavor is greeted with more success. I'm sure it's not easy to actually come up with new ideas (which is more than any of the armchair critics of his work could do) and even though I didn't like everything we seen in GW2 I still prefer it over the rest.
Maybe he could create a game where the player went from house to house looking for those pesky "critics" (you could tell a "critic" by how they constantly yelled "it's not good enough! waaa!") and then the player could shoot them with a ball of crap. I would fricken love that game.
