NCsoft you know something, City of Heroes was the best game you ever had, I say had because Cryptic Studios made that game, but you shut down the best MMORPG out there and are now paying the price. I hope your entire company fails.

Can't really blame NCsoft for this since its Carbine fault

Chinese launch would not chance anything. I don't see this game having chance in east market.

At this point it is just a matter of time until WS gets the plug pulled. NC has older, bad managed games like Lineage 2 that still manages to make 10 times as much money as WS.

Doesn't look like they'll even make it through this year. Those "hardcore raiders" who insisted the game was great the way it is can suck it now :pleased:

No surprise here, I predicted this on these very forum a week or two ago.

WS is now officially on life support. There will most likely be no significant spending on the game, and the moment it falls below a certain earnings level, NCSoft will pull the plug. The only reason for the shutdown delay is that it is most likely NCSoft's most embarrassing failure.

There's still a very small chance that WildStar enters maintenance mode and keeps cruising along with absolute minimal support.

NCSoft rarely does that They tend to close games down, i would guess they view anything but a success as a failure and as such something that needs to be removed.

This have been a good conversation

    Goodbye old friend.
    You will be missed. :3

I could spend sometime to write about the why's and how's but what's the point?
It's all here, and there in the official forums. No need to repeat ourselves.
This is still a great game, but with a few design choices in key aspects of gameplay
that simply won't fly in the year of our lord 2016.
And no.I don't mean the combat. The combat is awesome, and if you believe otherwise
you smell like cheese and got hair in your ears.

According to you all this was the WoW killer. Better luck next time fangirls

All of these would not have to happen if they did not boast about "we are bringing back hardcore raiding days and the game will revolve around hardcore pve and pvp players", they put too much hope on "hardcore" players who are by nature fickle as fuck. If they made end game more casual friendly from the start so that close knit family guild of 10 could compete for world 1st completion, they could have really make some impact.

I only hope is NCSOFT decides to sell the game/studio instead of simply closing it. In other hands, they may fix the 2 biggest issues: questing and alt friendliness.
But who would be interested in buying this?
Depends on the price! I think they have a lot of good components, with the right management and direction it could be turned around.

Damn shame. Never liked Wildstar but lots of good talent got let go :/
I disagree.  The game is bad.  It always was bad.  It's better that it fails so nobody will want to make another game like it.
Maybe they should do that to Blade and Soul and ArcheAge. Those are both bad and deserve to be shut down after you spend a bunch of money on them. Should I laugh when they do?

I mean why would you even say something like that? Can't you just accept that you don't like the game, but some other people do? Why do mmo players feel the need to shit all over every game around and revel in its struggles. Please do remember that when your game is up next.
My game (Blade and Soul) is not up next because my game doesn't suck.

You're right though they should shut down Archeage for sure.

I don't think neither B&S, Nor AA should be shut down. Game like BDO that encourages solo play and restrict player interaction in mmo environment on the other hand should go fuck themselves.

I don't get it. Why would any game need to shut down? There are people that like it. It boggles me that people would be happy in the misery of others. The problem is that the industry is trying to make mega-millions off of these and anything short of that isn't worth their time.

They live in a rockstar world of expensive development, outlandishly so. The games cost too much to make, too much to maintain, and the publishers expect way too much revenue return.

The problems in the industry aren't that the games are bad and that no one wants to play them. It's that most publishers want too much in return and are willing to flush it all. That's going to eventually leave us with a suck-fest of choices. NCSoft has always been bad about this. They're more than happy to collect the cash until they're ready to recycle.

Re: Why games need to be shut down- I want new, good MMOs.

MMOs take a big investment and a lot of time to make.  I don't want Dev teams making games similar to Wildstar.  The more spectacular the failure, the better.

As for NcSoft shutting Wildstar down quickly- Eh, it's not shut down yet, and it's been around for almost 2 years.  2 years of supporting a bad game that isn't profiting the company is quite enough, I think.

And seriously, there's no reason to feel bad for these Devs.  The game was in development for like, what, 8 years?  They all got paid well for a really long time making a horrible product.

You seem to have a notion that the money people have the ability to differentiate between what made Wildstar a dud but not your favorite MMO type.

It's a hell of a lot more likely that they will just dump all MMOs into the same "do not invest" category. So, in a sense, you're just cheering for screwing yourself.

The game was in beta in China for quite a while already.
Would be interesting to know how the chinese players took on the game. Anyone around who took part?
Perhaps nobody took part at all, hence they throw the towel now?

I'm not an expert on the chinese mmorpg market, but when i heard that Wildstar is supposed to get released there my first thought was that this game would require a ton of changes to attract somebody on the asian market.
And since Carbine couldn't even get the western version together...i'm not surprised at all.
The 2nd beta for Wildstar China only began on Jan 6th and concluded before March. I would called the beta a limited success but not significant in numbers as AAA mmorpg events go.

I didn't join in the China beta but here's a couple of my thoughts on it :

    1. Some of the potentially interested players have already been playing in the Western version of Wildstar - their numbers are split between those going back to localized Chinese version or stay put in the West.
    2. The Chinese publisher Giant Entertainment is hated by many gamers in China and they would avoid anything published by the company like plague.

Heavens there are some vicious folk here. If I don't like a game to hell with anyone else who happen to enjoy it. Shut it down ! Shut it down !

Oh not really I am not really being selfish and mean but it's really so that they can put that money into better games. Newsflash if they are shutting down a game they won't be investing in the genre very soon after such a loss.

China loses out on a pretty good sci-fi adventure and More families here in the US have to struggle with being laid off. Definitely not the news anyone wants to hear. Good luck everyone.

But shutting down one game doesn't translate into a better game automatically going into development somewhere.

People also posted in this thread that it's good for every WoW clone to get shut down, because sandbox games should be it.
The same thing applies here: shutting done a "WoW clone" somewhere doesn't encourage an investor to fund the making of a sandbox elsewhere.

Every mmorpg shut down may send a sign to the suits. Every mmorpg getting shut down may even make some guy hesitant to kickstart another indie-mmorpg with his 5$.

I  keep reading statements like "triple A mmorpg development is a thing of the past" in recent years, i don't want to hear that anymore.
I want a market on which there is a place for every mmorpg, wether or not you personally like it and where even crazy attempts like Wildstar with it's humor and everything find a niche. I want publishers that are totally ok with a playerbase of 120.000 people. I want investors that witness a healthy market and say "hey, lets do this AAA title now".

Every game that survives is a plus for everyone in the genre, most of all for the players. Every game shut down is a loss.

not really if their that short sighted  they throw money an a wall hoping whatever crap they make sticks, then leave when it goes bad. then anything they made/invested in will go the same route as they they only care about $$$ not making a good mmo that will be fun an last years.

NCsoft already stated during the last earnings call that they would increase the efficiency versus the size of its revenue as part of NCwest. Now we know what this meant. Wildstar will become very efficient.

I don't think it is fair to describe Wildstar as crap that sticks. There is a lot of passion in the game if you have played it from the tiny details of Sci Fi writers and paying homage to them in various lore and even in the lines of conversation . Also homage to the wild west. There was love in the art style and also in how some of the interior of buildings were done and some areas were positively gorgeous!. The music in Celestion was hauntingly beautiful.

Of course you would have missed all that if you never bothered to read the bits of data you collected from the magazines to data pads with amusing definitions and stories in them. I guess people with no patience to read or look at what they have can never truly get what effort and thought was put into the game.

Just because some of you did not like the art style it is truly unkind of you to describe the work put into the game as crap.
