Of all the developers, execs, PR people and corporate stooges in the MMO biz, who was worst?

noncleynoncley Member UncommonPosts: 718
It's so difficult to decide which of the bullshit artists, con men, customer haters and pathological liars in the MMO industry is your personal worst.

For me, it's a toss up between John Smedley who ruined so many, many fine games at SOE or Brad McQuaid whose every corporate decision at Sigil was driven by his pill addiction or Daniel Erickson, the appallingly clunky lead writer for SWTOR who, for some reason, was made the face of the game in the lead up to its launch. I remember when DE told people to 'shut up' about the absence of an actual space element to the game - and his audience of fanbois actually cheered him! They cheered!

So many bad, bad people in a relatively small industry.

Who, in your opinion, was the real pits of all?

Definitely the Warhammer Online spokesman/dev.  Totally forgot his name but he could sell ice to Eskimos.

All those people you mentioned don't hold a candle compared to some of the people here on these forums.

Clear the answer is Greed Monger.

I would have to say SOE was the worst. Ruining the way SWG was and letting it burn to a crisp.

For me it's a tossup between John Smedley and Russ Bullock of Piranha games.

Do you know any of these guys personally?

Did you work on any of these projects personally?

Unless you can answer yes to either of these questions then this is a troll post and you are just being a dick.

Did you know Jeffrey Dahmer personally?  Do you know Kim Jong-un personally?  Both were/are sick evil bastards, but I guess that since we didn't know them personally we can't make any comments.  Too bad about that Hitler guy, I hear he loved his dogs.  He must have been so nice!

GW2's Colin is at the top of my list. Lie after lie. Chronic redefining. This is not a battle ground it's Spvp. These are not quest they are hearts!. Ridiculous.

You know, even worse Dave Georgeson. The guy who sold the gaming world on Landmark and EQN. A dream peddler. People would say stuff like "I think there will be player made roads. There will be personal instances on our claim where we can build dungeons!" Dave would say "I can be whatever you want it to be! ;) "

Gary Whiting, for making a pyramid scam masquerading as an MMORPG (Stargate Worlds).  Surely that beats out "made changes that I didn't like to a game I care about", which seems to be what a lot of the replies are for.

Jason Appleton deserves a good bit of opprobrium for his role in Greed Monger.  I don't blame JamesP for how that turned out, though.

    I didn't realize it was a contest.

Also, it's an unreleased game from a guy who never worked in the industry before or again, so calling him a game developer is a bit of a stretch to begin with.

LOL did you Godwin THIS early into a thread.

Can you HONESTLY say that a PR person using a bit of corporate bullshit is remotely comparable to ANY of the other people you mentioned.

If you can, then I feel really bad for you when you get into the real world.

Seriously, PR people do PR speak, thats it, thats what they are paid to do in the same way a traffic warden is paid to give tickets.  Its just a job.

    Get over it.

But just on the tiniest chance your brain actually equates Genocide to a bit of corporate buzzwords.... when was the last time an MMO dev/community rep/PR/Marketing person killed anyone?

    These forums man.... these forums...

Quite a few to choose from, from that idiot who was making Greed monger, to half the higher-ups for warhammer online, and more.

But if I had to choose "THE" number one human refuse in mmo development, it would be the CEO of CCP, the developers of Eve online, just from the moniclegate incident alone. That is one person who deserves bodily harm..

To find an intelligent person in a PUG is not that rare, but to find a PUG made up of "all" intelligent people is one of the rarest phenomenons in the known universe.

To be fair, all Whiting did was rip off a bunch of investors and not any customers per se, so yes... he wasted a shot at developing a good IP, but that's about it. And I could name a dozen other people/companies that did that.

For pure sleazebaggery, there is Smedley and then there is everyone else.

I can't think of anyone who personally lied to their customers, over and over, year after year,  about numerous products (and not just one game, so no, it is not all about SWG) besides him.

I am surprised it took so long for his company to get sold out from under him. And then get fired.

(And as an added bonus, Smed's recent KS of some random 2d game crashed and burned hard, so it is clear what peoples' opinion of Smed is in regards to making any game ever again.)

    Well deserved, all of it.

Another vote for RG. He does nothing worth good after Ultima 7.
