Wait, what? They're canceling EverQuest Next to focus on launching Landmark, whose only real reason to exist is as a stepping stone toward creating EverQuest Next?
Landmark was more of a desperation move by SOE to release EQN without actually calling it EQN. It really was brilliant spin
Another example that the mmo genre is long past it's days of glory as a whole. I'm gonna make a prediction right now and say that the next new game Daybreak will announce(if any) will be a MOBA.
I doubt it, that market is so heavily saturated it's not even funny. Blizzard already tried to break into it, and they had everything going for them and still did extremely poorly. I mean they had a massive well known IP they could pull from, a team of talented experienced developers, and the game is still just a blip on the radar, very few people (comparatively speaking) play anything other than LoL or DOTA 2.

It's been a long time coming... but I am still saddened by it. I think the voxel based world was always a big ask with the level of detail they were aiming for.
Shame though... it feels like the death knell for large scope MMORPGs.
That said, I quite happy to see more niche games. I have always thought that there are certain elements that do not fit together in an MMO, most particularly PVP and PVE; I hate having my PVE experience broken by balance for PVP; and I hate having my PVP experience ruined by the unfair advantage of gear and levels required for PVE.
So, if this is the end of the large scope, Jack-of-all MMORPGs, it is perhaps not a bad thing.
I have absolutely no confidence in Daybreak, any of their products or ANYTHING coming from their interviews. It's all 100% PR speak to grab as much cash as possible from players, which would be _ok_ if Daybreak actually delivered on it as well but so far there has been nothing to indicate this - on the contrary.
I have found in my lifetime, that the beauty of hating stupid people is, that it crosses all racial boundaries.
I read : "it would have costed too much more to bring to market". I'm really sad that this is ending that way. The franchise and team working on that game deserved better.
"We know that the fans of EQN will be disappointed by the news"
No. Not disappointed. Try "will hate you forever."
Yep. I knew Daybreak would ruin EQ. They let all the good people go (probably the one's they thought were too expensive). Even their logo sucks. We can all look forward to a new "EQ action-adventure co-op game" on the xbox now. Watch.
I want you guys to think about something. They said EQN "just isn't fun" yet they're continuing on with Landmark. Digest that.
I find that very bizarre.
We are cancelling the game because it just isn't fin but are keeping the toolkit we used to make the game that doesn't have any of the fun elements by default and are going to sell that....Just shouts "be better fulfill our legal obligations so that we don't get everyone asking for a refund.

Utter incompetence.
Daybreak Games is nothing more than a husk of the legacy of SOE and SOE had what could be arguably the biggest F UP in the industry with the Star Wars Galaxies NGE.
This is coming from someone who has 1000+ hours in Planetside 2 and played EQ from launch until well into Planes of Power.
My advice is that if you enjoy the games Daybreak currently has up and running to play them while you still can. I don't see this company being around much longer and who knows what game will be cancelled next.
I can't see Landmark being around for long.

EQN was a trainwreck when Colubus Nova purchased SOE. All those "good" people were fired, because after 9 years of work all they had to show for it was Landmark.
It isn't like the EQN project was going along well and then Daybreak messed it up in the last year. SOE rebooted the game design 4 times before Columbus Nova bought SOE. It isn't fair to blame Columbus Nova for not wanting to throw huge sums of money into a team that has failed for nearly a decade.

Hell I feel like they should give refunds to everyone that bought into landmark. I know I would like my $60 bucks back.
I also feel like it's buyer beware as well tho and it was well over a year ago on the purchase but I won't give this company any more money and have zero confidence in them.
Pretty pathetic to be a gaming company that can't even make games.

They also said thing things they have learned many things making EQN will be added to future games. My guess is if they are keeping Landmark, it will be getting at least some of that. With a dev teams focused on Landmark for Landmark (not just a tool to build EQN any more) My guess is we will see many updates that expand what Landmark is. I hope they start expanding props for non-fantasy elements. The combat is really sad, I wonder if it will be getting an update? Or will it just linger till the game dies. I hope we start getting some new Blueprints for what to expect for Landmark.
Fun/money first, everything else...doesn't matter. Well folks, strap in for mobile games amd crap games just on par with some flash games. Rip gg no re
You should of asked about all the people that put money into Landmark, we didn't do it to back Landmark. It was done in good faith and per the words of SoE that those funds were earmarked for the development of EQN through developing content and ideas via Landmark.
I want my 99 bucks back, I wouldn't of given a dime for Landmark, I could of played Minecraft if that was the play style I wanted.
Saddest part about this is it pretty much ensures that no AAA company will try to develop another MMORPG with radically new and different systems. They will play it safe even more now.
Everquest as a whole a is a very profitable franchise for anyone that owns it. This was nothing more that a predictable, damage control statement that really anyone that has a decent business background could have predicted easily. "Don't rule it out. Sorry. Cancelled, for now." When it does startup again tens of of thousands will line up on-line to pre-order empty boxes.

You are delusional if you think Landmark is going to do anything other than wither and die.
It was the test bed and building foundation for Everquest Next and the very game it was intended to help build got canned. I bet the only reason they are launching Landmark is because it would cost them more not to. If they shut it down and had everyone ask for refunds for example, or to avoid some legal thing like a class action or false advertising.
I think your just too passionate and hopeful to admit what's going on.

What they are probably doing is looking at games such as minecraft and trove, postulating that people like building things and revamping Landmark with that in mind.
Consider that they have invested x amount of dollars into the project, of course they are going to want to see some return.

So when Russell Shanks gave this interview was he:
a) unaware that they (DBG) were about to announce the imminent closure of Everquest Worlds; b) or he "forgot" to mention it when asked about the future of EQ?

Same here. A little spit and polish on the old titles would make them feel like new.
