Question on Cartel Market, and level 60 starter gear

Well, I took the advice and decided to give SWTOR a try after not playing it in a long time. I am currently a hardcore ESO player, and after getting into it the story playthrough is amazing. I am finding this game to be great, and might even switch over, or play both. Now to the main point of my post. I have level 60 starter gear starting off with the new expansion, and is the gear that you can buy better than the gear you start off with, or do I have to quest for my gear. I am curious because I have the money to spend in the cartel market, but before I buy the gear I want to know if its better than the gear I start off with!?

    None of the gear you buy in the cartel market has any stats whatsoever. They used to sell colour crystals that had a bit (same as crafted equivalents) but I think they've stopped even that. So that equipment on sale is purely cosmetical, you need to socket it with modifications that carry stats of use them in their "appearance tab" setup.
