    Do you think this may have something with VR? Maybe they couldn't get the necessary quality out of the current PS4 that they wanted? So now they're upping the hardware to offer better VR performance? Not 4K VR, but actual good HD VR?

    all rumors of 4K are likely designed to just hype the hype meter for people who dont know any better but perhaps a solid 1080p or 2k?

    That seems to be exactly why they are doing it. Sony has already admitted the PS4 is not capable of delivering VR on the level of it's competitors. The rumored PS4K would help close that gap. Though it still will not be able to match OR or VIVE. Sony likes to be positioned as a higher end electronics maker and I am sure being technologically so far behind OR and VIVE does not sit well with them.
    its a good move I think.

    For me the big question is 'what is Microsoft doing'?
    I mean OR is a bit like their original Surface. Expensive, experimental and more targeted toward public use space.

    They (MS) just seem to have zero comment on the world of VR

    Microsoft is working more with AR and has the HoloLens. It looks to have some neat applications too. I can only imagine playing an rts, board games, or maybe even ttrpgs with it.
