Agree, this better be April fools. If Souls games didn't make you learn how to play them, didn't punish you for being lazy or cheap, they'd be just another faceroll RPG.
Wildstar made the mistake of focusing on hardcore gamers. This company learned from such a mistake and did something to help it get more customers. If you don't like an easy mode - don't play it!
Please no. Don't touch my Dark Souls. The last one was easy enough as it was. Wish we'd go back to Demons' Souls difficulty.
I love niche games, and this is my niche - I don't ask for Hello Kitty games to have dragons and gore in them to be more appealing to me because it wouldn't be Hello Kitty then, so I don't appreciate when others want to subtract from Dark Souls what makes it Dark Souls.
My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.
April fool or not, i do not get the line of thought of people not wanting an easy mode.
I find the normal mode of the game hard and rewarding, but the way other people play it does not affect me so, why should i get opposed?
Thinking like this is the reason why discrimination against minorities in real life occurs. people worry too much about themselves and forget they only live their lives and not others XD
First off, the company is based around the unrelenting difficulty of its games that you either beat, or quit. They like the idea of you dying and raging, and eventually figuring shit out. There's also something that is just more fun about knowing everyone is going through the same crap as you while trying to figure it out, and you use their notes, or their deaths as warnings (or perhaps death traps, as some notes can be), and these notes as they're rated can be beneficial. As well, there are spells that affect other people's games. Yada yada. It's just not a good idea to split up the game into multiple difficulties. Easy mode would take away everything special about the game.
If you find the game too hard, focus on beating it with the online co-op, as that makes it drastically easier. Splitting the game modes would also bring less people able to play together in this way.
If someone buys this and doesn't have an internet connection, they can still summon NPC's that make things easier, though obviously not as much as a player would help. Well, if the player knew what they were doing anyway.
It's designed from the ground up with one difficulty, and it's expected you'll play online with the many systems that overlap to other people's games and whatever.
I definitely don't envy anyone who would rather play a shell of a game simply to beat it and be done with it.
You guys... you're so silly... Super Mario Bros. needed an easy mode. And Contra. And Battletoads. Let's just easy mode the world. You know the negotiations with North Korea and Iran? Easy mode them too. School? Easy mode. No need to study.
I hate the damn car stage on Battletoads. F that game.
There are already features in the game that make it "easymode". You can summon people to help you out with areas and bosses. Some bosses become total pushovers, once there's more than one person fighting it. So no, I don't think this game needs an "easymode".

So can we safely assume that there are already organic options within the game to alter difficulty, and that the crowd attracted to the game doesn't really care whether or not people utilize those options to beat any given area or boss, as it doesn't affect their own game play experience?
I think that (aside from the options being organic) is exactly the point the author of the article is trying to make...

The line of thought is the following: Easy mode option ruins the game! Why ? Because if im having trouble, if something is really difficult, I would subconsiously know I could just go easy mode and get past the challenge. That constant subconscious reminder ruins the fun, it ruins the focus, it ruins concentration.
When that option isnt there, its alot more fun AND rewarding when making it.
FYI, I suck at Dark Souls 2, I die alot, I have to do stuff over and over and over, but this game is the one of the few really good games that dont have easy mode. Play another game if you need stuff to be easy, dont ruin the fun for us that want the game to be hard.
This had to be an attempt at humor because the entire enticement of the dark souls series is that it is brutal and you need to learn on the fly.
If this is not for humor why does every game made need to be made to make everyone happy. This series found a huge following that clearly loves it the way it is, so why change it to make others happy. Let the people that enjoy the game keep it as it is. Part of the allure is being able to tell your friends that you were able to take down that boss the first time without help. Now just imagine if there was an easy mode how would that be an accomplishment then?
I don't get the "you must game the way i do" if not you are doing it wrong. I haven't played any dark souls games yet so i dont know their level of challenge. However i remember witcher 2 when i had to fight the bald witcher and i was like this is freaking impossible. After about 20 attempts and never once getting his hp down to 80% i finally changed the setting to easy. If the game didn't offer me easy mode i would have stopped playing and never enjoyed it. Because that fight was at the beginning of the game. Games need easy mode because sometimes people just want to play and have fun. Getting frustrated over how hard something is doesn't help anyone. Sure it makes the players rise above the challenge but who cares they just want to play, win , and enjoy a story. Thats the purpose and without one of these there really isn't a game. OOh im soo cool i can rise about the challenge of my gamepad by pressing the right buttons at the right times.
Twice the writer says that introducing easy mode would be better for everyone and yet he never explains how the millions of players that already enjoy the game would benefit from those changes. Instead he speaks of the casual gamers that wouldn't look twice at Dark Souls if it weren't for the fact that so many players hyped the game.
A huge part of the charm with dark souls is that the game forces you to improve, you have to learn boss mechanics to progress. If you introduced a switch that removed the need to "get good" you would remove the incentive to improve and a majority of players would lose what makes dark souls such a gratifying experience.
The interesting aspect of dark souls is that you can actually make it easier or harder for you to play the game. If you have a hard time progressing you can:
Watch video guides on bosses and read online guides on the game in general.
Summon other players.
Summon npc's.
Grind to increase your level.
Grind to enchant your gear.
What you don't get is an auto-win button.
Iselin: And the next person who says "but it's a business, they need to make money" can just go fuck yourself.

The bigger point is that adding an easier difficulty should have no impact on players unless they choose to also play on easy.

I don't get the same joy on beating games with difficulty sliders as I do with hard games that lack them. Part of it is that difficulty sliders undermines the motivation on struggling with tough bosses, its much easier to find motivation when the only way forward is to bash your fists as hard as you can until the wall break.
The underlying reasoning would be the way I was raised. When I played card games with adults they never gave me a win because they know how angry I would get over it. There was always something hollow over a win that you didn't deserve.

It would hurt the existing player base. Online play is an integral part of the game and multiple difficulties would take away from that. For example, if a new player is struggling on a boss, rather than summoning someone to help him, he can just put it on easy mode. It takes away from the social element.
I believe this is what makes a lot of MMOS less compelling than they could be. You don't need to rely on anyone.
You are dead wrong, because everything that you said doesn't account for brand / name management, which is likely one of the most important things for the souls series. Dark Souls is only known and respected by many gamers exactly because it prides itself on difficulty. If it had an easymode it would just become another name amongst thousands of easy games.
Even casual gamer 0 would never have heard of Dark Souls had it not had this reputation. Very likely casual gamer 0 will also be buying Dark Souls 3 because he is curious about this difficulty and possibly wants to earn the respect of gamer peers for playing the game (epeen), even if he / she uninstalls the thing after dying once.

Dark souls is casual regardless of the perceived difficulty. Basically, you expect to die when learning the bosses fighting patterns or the quirks of a specific area, and once you know the quirks you can then grind to get through the harder spots. They could make the game easier, but they already have ways to do that indirectly via play-style, certain items, etc.
