whales do exist on mobile games .. so probably also on MMOs?

http://intelligence.slice.com/hardly-pocket-change-mobile-gamers-spend-an-average-of-87-dollars-on-in-app-purchases/

and I quote

"With a panel of over 4 million online shoppers, Slice Intelligence gives the most detailed, and accurate digital commerce data available, and is reported daily."

"Data shows that only 10 percent of the mobile in-game purchasing population accounts for 90 percent of mobile gaming sales. "

"Further listening to the statistical sonar reveals that the top one percent, the “white whales”, of mobile gamers account for an astonishing 58 percent of the mobile gaming revenue from in-app purchases."

"This trend doesn’t occur among  traditional games, where roughly 28 percent of the audience accounts for 90 percent of game sales."

Note that their data is from "extracting detailed information from hundreds of millions of aggregated and anonymized e-receipts", so they do NOT know how many players are not paying. All the numbers are calculated based on people who pay.

How is this even a line of inquiry?

We already know whales exist as a very common and often integral component of F2P games including MMOs.

Asking the obvious is kinda pointless.

There are whales, yes. The last few years, a number of projects have been targeting them.

Whales in MMOs came first.  (apparently the term originated from casinos, actually, but the context of a whale to a casino as well as the method for a business fishing them up is sliiightly different from a whale in an MMO)

    who are we?

I believe you know that. But i remember seeing people questioning the existence of whales, and also how "big" they are.

This data put the argument that f2p games are expensive for anyone but the whales to bed. 1% of the paying customers (note paying customers, not ALL customers) pays for 56% of the revenue. So f2p games are heavily subsidized by the top 1% of paying customers.

But do you know that 1% of paying customers pay for 56% of all revenue before reading this article?

I thought this was common knowledge?  I saw numbers around that statistic several times for sevearl different games from several different sources, and I've brought it up in conversations many times over the past few years at various times.

Um.... well, I guess it's not common knowledge for everyone, I suppose.  Well, now you know, and knowing is half the battle!

I knew that a very small percentage of a game's population accounts for a large percentage of the overall spending in the game. As for your thread title "whales do exist on mobile games..so probably also on MMO's?", having played Archeage for a year and a half, I can tell you first hand that whales exist in MMO's. No real surprise there.

Ah yes, you understand "the random" now.

It only serves to drive endless (and pointless) conversation.

Whales exist in everything.  Any form of entertainment you can imagine has those people who are willing to spend unreal amounts of money on it.

There was a multi millionaire who played at my Warhammer 40k club in Monterey California.  He used to give away entire armies worth thousands just because he was bored with them, then dump a few thousand more on a new army.

Then there are the whales who can't really afford to be whales.  People who spend lots of money on games that should have been spent on bills, food, and clothing.  Those who are addicted.

I once was a member of a corp in EVE where the majority of that corp were whales.

Whales have been around since early F2P titles. I remember hearing about ROM players spending upwards of 8k a piece just to stay competitive. That's an insane amount of money for one person to spend on a F2P title that wasn't even that great. Same with Allods, people would spend 8 to 10k slotting their gear. Phone titles have even worse whales since most phone titles rely on RNG gambling of boxes or crystals, where you have an insanely low chance to get something better than what you were using before. I've played a few phone games that are run like that, and all of which the whales pretty much owned all the PVP. That new clash of clans game with the summoning of monsters is really fun, but when you get against a whale you can tell. They will have every single epic card, leveled up super high. It's just unfair at that point. My point is, whales are pretty common knowledge. You can usually spot whales a mile away, just because they usually look alot cooler than normal players, not in real life but at least in game.

not all the much different.  Offer a slightly better experience for spending more cash is the principal.  Make them feel more important that other people.

Still pretty staggering that 10% are 90% of the spending......I see people post here that they cant play f2p games for free so they must be part of the 10%.

I think it is even more staggering that 1% pays for more than 50%. Also note that this is not 1% of the total player population. It is 1% of the PAYING players population.

The actual percentage will be much lower. In fact, i read that a successful game like WoT has only a 25-30% conversion. That is, only 25-30% of the players pay anything. If we are generous and use the 30% number .. it means 10% of those 30% = 3% pays for 90% of the revenue.

    And 1% of that 30% = 0.3% pays for more than 50%.
