damn, its like there is a whole community like us, I didn't even know any of this stuff, and like Bill I am level 24 with around 12 days of play time on my main.
now to find an obscure house and some cool vendors since I got about 27 (100k) bars in my bank right now doing nothing
Great article thanks Bill, didn't have a clue about this. What I like best about this game is all the little nuggets of new info like this you seem to uncover, bah. I was in at early start and been in my 30's don't even care about cap. Refreshing to game without just that in mind.
Do you plan on doing any actual multiplayer or community gaming with your play time? Is there even such a playstyle in this game? Reading the R.I.P. so far I haven't seen anything game play wise that even indicates this is a multiplayer game, much less an MMO. In fact, I've been reading many previews/reviews and aside from some end game pvp, it really sounds like everyone blogging about this game have only played solo.
For those who want it to be, this can be a grind to high level PVP game. Most of the bloggers you must have run into are probably like William, who delve into more aspects than just the end game. I myself am level 20 after a week or so and constantly get sidetracked by the non-combat aspects of the game. A person can level just by fishing and whatnot if you really want to but it's certainly slow.
Ok. So are you saying there is no meaningful reason to play with others outside of end game pvp? I recognize the game has other things to do besides pvp. My question was, are any of those things multiplayer friendly? Because the activities I've read about have all been solo. In your 20 levels have you grouped with, or had any meaningful interaction with, other players?
No. This is a single player game.
Forgive me. It being April 1st and all, I can't tell if I'm being trolled or not. :P I'm not trying to be a smart ass or anything. I'm genuinely curious.
Lol its ok. I should have expanded on that so you knew. But yes, BDO is mostly a single player game. From 1-45 you can grind mobs with your guild and maybe participate in guild quest. Then, when you are 45 you can do PvP together. Crafting is not player-friendly because you cannot trade. Its still a good game, but if you are looking for something to play with a group of friends, this probably isn't it.
PvP post 45, IE random ganging, has been a non issue for me. I've played on most of the Uno channels and there hasn't been much in the way of ganking at all. Almost all of the PvP happens as guild wars.
I am beginning to suspect that some of the criticism about ganking has been exaggerated by people who are worried about pvp.
I very rarely see anything come through chat about a PKer running around, and when I do it there's usually something else going on in the form of drama between the two involved.
No one wants to lose gear because they killed a few people.
Anyone who is considering the game, but is concerned about it being open pvp, don't be. There is no rampant ganking, this is nothing like Darkfall or Mortal online, or any other free for all pvp game.
Really good review and fantastic information. I'm hopelessly addicted to this game after a rather lackluster start for me. I find all the activities really fun. I think that Daum has done a really good job making all your characters feel like a family too. I know that if I roll up an alt, they will all contribute to my progress. Housing is something I'm really enjoying and the ability to plan my "empire." I haven't bought a thing in the Pearl shop but may take my first foray there, once I know that I'm really going to stick with the game. So far it is looking.
Looking forward to reading more reviews. Like Bill, I'm only fairly low level (22) just muddling around with all the systems.

Once every few days I see a guildie die to a PKer, although we're a fairly small guild, so that doesn't mean too much...
For now the karma penalty seems to be doing its job and keeping the random ganking down. This will probably change in the future when they add that bounty hunting system though... unless there are some serious consequences to getting caught by a bounty hunter (and some good rewards for the hunter), it'll be utterly useless in dissuading this sort of behavior. =/

I was told it's more like the stock market, and it's possible to lose money through the investment thing. And, we did 2 guild boss scrolls last night, and it was epic. I'm only 39 due to my forays into other systems, but I was able to help by feeding guildies black spirit rage and just generally trying to hit the thing while not dying. I've also grouped with strangers in farming spots, and it was fun. So yeah, you can solo, but like most things, it's more fun with friends.
I enjoy it, but as we've discussed on Twitter (ScottJ) Bill, I keep finding things to do besides combat skill level my main with the limited game time I have everyday LOL.
Now I don't feel so bad for doing the same thing. My old school MMO mentality is like "get to grinding and leveling" But I'm like, "I wanna do other stuff". No hurry to rush to 50 in this game.
Just for fun, I went in and visited (you can do this - just press F1 at the door intead of just walking into your own instance) the house of the person ranked #1 for my place in Velia who has more than 8 times the number of points for his - not that I'm competing, my house is mostly a brewery and a repository for odd junk I get as drops.
Well this guy managed to cram in 4 beds into the small bedroom + assorted armoires, etc., 6 chandeliers, 4 couches, 5 tables... it looked like a 2nd hand furniture shop lol. I won't be getting any rewards for my house any time soon:)
OTOH, I did see this nice tree-house near Trent that I quite liked. I might have to call the movers soon.

I do other stuff but combat is the main thing I've been doing. Level 35 so far, loving the game. It is HUGE, beautiful, fun as can be and did I mention huge?
Great article, very informative. I always wondered what those points were for when I was decorating my house/room, and I didn't know about investment banking either.
This game has beautifull tools, its up to players to play it has they like. But before that its important to forget the old mmorpg system and go with a clean mind to BDO.
I am only lvl 36 and played a lot since release and I am still amazed with the amount of content this game has to offer. The details and the new paradigm is what makes BDO a strong game.
hehe master of nothing Skilled in all, Thats me, i'ts only alchemy, training and farming im not skilled in now XD and im lvl 42, been playing non stop since release except for a few nights with drunken madness, and im unemployed. too much too do and i love it hehe ^^
So eventually, when there's new furniture at the Pearl Shop, you'll have to spend more real money into keeping your house ranked as the best house, in order to keep accessing this nodes, so you can keep earning tons of in-game money.
That's like investing real money into in-game coin with the side effect of getting a cozy house.
@ AtrusV You do know you can make furniture, get it from events, buy it from NPC's, get it as drops from killing stuff, get it as quest rewards and buy it on the Marketplace. The cash shop is the last place I would look for furniture. Though I do like the benefits from bed and the bookcase I got from my preorder pack.

also a few pointers to where you can buy more IP in game for silver.
Good thing above is that people who dont pay cash etc, whilst having god aweful looking houses can in fact use the feature so can't be pay 2 win
This post is all my opinion, but I welcome debate on anything i have put, however, personal slander / name calling belongs in game where of course you're welcome to call me names im often found lounging about in EvE online.
