I quit FFXIV for good a few months back, finally losing even enough interest to be annoyed by it to complain about its massive shortcomings anymore. In my mmo free period I saw a news story about XI closing down on consoles and that expansions were to cease, saddened by the impending doom and gloom surrounding the end of XI I went back to play that and have been having a lot of fun with it, more than I did during the last year or so on XIV.
In a very positive move it seems they have changed their outlook on the game and now it will get monthly updates of new content every month going forward. Good to see the game will still getting the attention it deserves, it's one of the few remaining different mmo titles in a sea of wow clones.
They even let you download it for free now

Personally, I think it's past it's time now and the game is mostly for older players looking to get a bit of nostalgia in. We need more games with that sense of character growth and freedom again, and this game echos a better time in the industry.
I still go back to visit because the nostalgia is real and Vana'diel is a great place to explore. Just being in certain locations and hearing certain music in that game brings back memories that I have forgotten over time.
Youll still have to farm the AF/Relic gear for enhancing your abilities which is something everyone has to do, most poeple have 20+ jobs.
I would recommend BLM as your first job, since its used a ton in end game XP'ing.
I would recommend trying it. Since all stuff up to end game content is easy to solo and duo now with the Trust system. AI party members you can xp with.
