Back when I leveled up in WoW for the first time in BC, those levels were packed with newer players (mid-2008 timeframe) and you could get people in the quest zones to do instances like SFK with you, etc. If you needed help with a quest you could team up with other people. There were people everywhere all the way up through to max level.
That's all gone now, because the game is old and even those still playing would probably buy a Character Boost or PL themselves with full Heirloom Gear in dungeons than level up "yet another alt" from scratch.
I wouldn't be averse to Blizzard selling level 60 Character Boosts for $15 in the game shop, to just allow most "new[er]" players to skip those levels and avoid the issues that can arise from the empty early-game content and the fact that dungeon queues are often unfavorable to "true newbs."
Wow is nothing more than a linear questing game,if you find that fun, then all the power to you,i do not ,i like freedom in my game play.
As to those other games mentioned by the OP,i would not spend a single minute in them, knowing what i do now about them, but yes at one time we all hoped or thought Tabula Rasa would turn out good.
I have all but given up hoping for a MMO that deserves my money and time,i see nothing very good only small tid bits of what could be.I won't give up waiting, something will come along eventually, for now i'll play the many good single player games and try not to waste any money on all the crappy MMO's.

Playing to lvl 20 in WoW to see if its any good/would be enjoyable is a complete waste of time. It is not at all indicative on the fun factor of WoW and definitely not indicative of how the gameplay(most specially combat) will be.

If something is a complete waste of time, its speaks to a flaw with the product. If it is not fun and entertaining to play WoW up to level 20, well... thats just bad.

In Vanilla WoW, you did not really receive much variety in term of actually useful spells and abilities ´tll you crossed the lv35 treshold and for some classes/specs it could be as late as lv 45.
Leveling a Warrior in early vanilla , for instance, was an exercice in patience and missed heroic strikes.
Warrior pre lv 30 rotation:
Auto Attack -Auto Attack - Auto Attack- Auto Attack- Battle Shout- Auto Attack-Auto Attack - Heroic Strike (miss) (pop a potion) auto attack, auto attack , auto attack- Heroic Strike...
Sure, you had rend, thunderclap, sunder armor and hamstring but for the most part they were useless (especially rend and thunderclap)
One of my proudest moments in the Vanilla was successfully soloing that escort quest up in that cave in Redridge with my warrior. It took a lot of patience and timing to pull it off.
The BIG problem with the current game is the ease of Gameplay, and I'm not talking about raiding.

Vanilla WoW was designed to bring veteran players in from other MMORPG's. Easy faceroll leveling would have killed the game at that time.

But I'm not thinking about time to level or death penalties. My thoughts are about the challenge of the leveling content. I'm not trying to claim it was harder than other games of the time. I'm saying its challenge was appealing enough to players who were no strangers to the genre.
If it was 2004 and WoW just released, with the leveling game as it is now, would the game have been as successful?
Personally, I don't believe it would have been.

Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
I already had an account and would have to add the Starter Edition, again wasnt planning on playing but did this for the promotion to get Lady Liadrin for Hearthstone.
The Starter Edition also has alot of restrictions not found in the 7-day trial I was given.
- Expansion content (quests, zones, etc)
- Characters above level 20
- Pet Battles
- Other chat channels and whispers to non-friends
- All guild-related functions
- Party formation
So idk man, I guess thats enough reason for me to not make a starter edition account, like if Im going to play the game I mid as well be able to pet-battle since that wasnt in Vanilla and at least its different. In fact Pet Battles were a totally unnecessary edition to the game - but actually provided a challenge and had some cool questlines, so they were my favorite part of the experience, while the core game was absolute water trash - content wise.
So yeah, im glad I did the 7-day trial for sure.
