imageNostalrius Team Retracts Offer to Release Source Code

Citing themselves as 'ambassadors of a larger movement', the Nostalrius team has announced that they will not be releasing the server's code as they had previously indicated. The decision was made to ensure that when meeting with Blizzard representatives in the near future they would have 'all the chances on [their] side', an admission of sorts that perhaps releasing most of the server's code would be a bad move.

Humm maybe my idea that Blizzard would be working with them on this is a bit more of a pipe dream to see a real legacy server. But good that they are sticking to their guns and not just giving away the code.

These "Vanilla WoW" people remind of some of the swg pre-cu players.  They just can't take no for an answer.  And LOL at some people wanting to legally force these guys to give up their source code.  It's Blizzard's IP to do with as they see fit.  With copyrights, you either protect them vigorously or risk losing them.  That's how the law works, at least in the US.

I'd rather Blizzard improve the game today than go back in time to an earlier version.  I enjoyed early WoW a lot, right up until Cata was released.  Since then, I think Blizzard has really dropped the ball big time.  I'm hoping Legion reverses that trend but I'm not holding my breath.

Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?

Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.

False. That is true of trademarks, not copyrights.

They just blew that chance all to shit. lol at their bargaining power.

I feel pretty comfortable saying that they probably used their bargaining power to benefit themselves. If Blizzard is taking this seriously and has secret intentions to announce some type of legacy system they're going to want to market it on a timeline and turn it into a promotional opportunity. Getting a payday or even hired by Blizz to work on it might be more meaningful to them than playing people's champions.

We'll see, I thought Blizz was serious about not running a legacy system, but it doesn't feel like that's the whole picture right now and I'm wondering if they're really weighing their options to release something.

For all you that are bitching that this is a negative.  You have no skills with negotiations or no understanding of it.  This is a very smart move by the Nost Team.  This is a well yea we will give you this, or wait no we will not.............. Ok what will it cost us or what do we need to do?  It's a bargaining tactic used to put your team in the best potion to win the negotiations.  Also they could benefit financially by holding some code to anti cheat methods that they used that blizzard can use going forward and financially benefit from it.

Both sides are not seeing that they can financially benefit from working together.  Now they need to negotiate.  Don't like it?  Think the Nost group should just cave in to a corporation?  You're a fool if you think that.  If you created some thing for a product that someone owns that makes that product better and know that the main company can make money off of would you walk away with no financial benefit from it?  No you would do what ever it takes to make money off it, if you think otherwise you are a fool.

Anyone who does not get it.

Our custom anticheat had unique functionalities that allowed us to detect and track any kind of hack / bot in a generic way. We believe the anticheat that we made was able to detect and was able to block all of the known threats, and releasing our code would allow the development of more powerful cheating tools that would be more difficult, if not impossible, to detect. We have spent countless hours to fight people making money from exploits, cheats and traffics: the last thing we want to see now is people getting more money from wow hacks because of us.

Basically they have some Anti chest code that blizzard can use in a game like HOTS or Overwatch.  Blizzard could take this code adapt it to their games and financially benefit off it.  This is a huge bargaining chip that they could sell to blizzard and adapt it to Overwatch or HOTS or Current WOW or hell the new MMO they might be making that we dont know about.  It's like the guy that invented the umbrella for the Golf Cart.  He didnt steal the Gold Cart design however he made an improvement that both parties can make money on.  It's that simple.

Also a good read about Nostalrius.  http://www.buffed.de/World-of-Warcraft-Spiel-42971/News/Nostalrius-Classic-Interview-1194098/2/

You will likely see the Nost group release the code directly to blizzard after there are signed agreements once the negotiations have concluded.

If they could get a potential job at Blizzard they would not want to anger them by releasing that code into the wild.

Too bad, but if things don't go well at Blizzard, it may still show up. And that's one of the reasons why they are holding back right now, it's an ace in the hole.
They claim all they want is vanilla servers, and Blizz has always refused. Now Blizz is finally willing to talk to them after their legal maneuvers to shut them down threatened to go like a hydra sticking it's heads in a blender, going from one renegade to thousands in an instance.
Whether they are doing this for themselves, or for the vanilla community, it's a good move. The real question is what happens after this, and a lot of that hinges on what Blizz does both publicly and behind those closed doors.
    Be patient.

On a side note, I'd like to run a wow server for me and my friends to goof around in, but who wouldn't?

Lost my mind, now trying to lose yours...

While i am sure they are greatly overestimating the actual worth of the anti-cheat (most likely a case of it being to small for anyone to take a serious crack at it) but that is very much their code and nobody has any more right to it than they do Blizzards stuff.

Also not dropping the Nossy source code is the only bargain chip they have. If they do it is bye bye to any chance they have with Blizzard and there would most likely be legal actions taken soon afterward.

This have been a good conversation

  • filmoretfilmoret Member EpicPosts: 4,906
Well they would lose all hope of any kind of arrangement if they released code.  Not to mention getting sued by Blizzard for such an act.  And to think we all believed the invitation was for some "higher" purpose.  All it was for to keep them from releasing code.
Are you onto something or just on something?

Or maybe it was all to get a job and big bucks by the admins. I can guarantee you that the condition of the meeting was to publicly announce they would not release the code. Doing so opened Blizzard's door and a potential job offer / contract work. Money is at the root of both sides of the issue, not altruism.

Also the threat of legal action due to taking hostile (if that is the right word) actions by releasing the source code after being served a CnD =P

Blizzard is wanting to restore older games, there are positions opened for these types of jobs. These people showed real professionalism and skill to make this server happen, their talent behind all this could be an easy way for them to handle classic servers. I'm not set on Blizzard is finally going to budge, for all we know this could be for an agreement to give Blizzard the code so they can destroy it.

    What have they pirated?

Do you seriously believe that Blizzard would not be prosecuting them if they had "pirated" server code?

What they have done is usually referred to as "reverse engineering". Which is legal everywhere as far as I know.

what is this crap lately with the titles?

I saw the first post from nos on the boards and the only source code allowed to be released was the script code used for video stuff to help other server hosters of vanilla do some creative stuff. That was it, the main source code is not allowed out lol :D There is a reason for that which shall not be mentioned for a long time I am sure...

So with not reading the post because it sounded absolutely like click bait - They can only be retracting the video source coding for scenes. That is all, so what gets my goat is why the title as it is? Indicating oooo they decided to not release the source code, as semi accurate as that may be its not enough for a valid thread title.

Read over the original posting after the blizzard meet instead I would say, then read over it once more.

Apparently you missed the original statement by the admins that they were willing to release the code after receiving a C&D letter from Blizzard. Today's statement retracts the original.

Take note of the original letter to the community from April 6th:

Today is also the day where Nostalrius will start being community-driven in the truest sense of the word, as we will be releasing THE SOURCE CODE, and anonymized players data (encrypting personal account data), so the community as a whole will decide the form of the future of Nostalrius. We will still be there in the background if you want us to, but will no longer take the lead.

    I stand by the title.

Releasing the source code while they are staring down the barrel of a lawsuit is probably not the smartest thing to do. That's almost like entering a guilty plea before the trial even starts.
