We have had lots of hyped fps titles that offered short-term fun and that had fanboys in a wild fury, for a month or two and then they bailed on them.
Titanfall
Star Wars battlefront
Evolve
Why is Overwatch different? To me it looks identical and will follow the exact same path of those games, as in big for a couple of months and then huge player drops with the remaining few being milked to death with micro transactions.
Do gamers really never learn and are doomed to constantly repeat the same routine every time? Seems like it to me!

Is Overwatch a ground breaking genre changing game? No, no it is not. It is simply a well made, fun to play FPS. That is it. Much like the literally hundreds of others out there. While I like Overwatch and enjoyed the time I spent playing it, I prefer Battleborn right now.
So to answer your question directly, I believe it will be exactly like Evolve and Titanfall (I did not play much played SW:BF) and that, imo, is a good thing.
Here is a question for you; Are you a gamer? Are you guilty of what you are accusing everyone that considers themselves a gamer?
I find flaw in your thought process that somehow the games you site are dead or in some way bad.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.
However you are correct that overwatch is not revolutionary. The difference is that Blizzard will actually push the competitive scene which will keep it relevant for an extended period of time.

I'm having an absolute blast playing this game. The heroes are nuanced and there's a lot of flexibility for changing the team on the fly to get the objective completed.
Personally, as a standard FPS player, I'm really enjoying the playstyle of Soldier 76 and McCree.
Now saying all of this, I also played and really enjoyed Titanfall. It was a fantastic game and I'm not even sure why interest in it fell off so quickly. It was a really really well made game, but these days it can take tens of minutes to get a match unless you want to play Windowlicker Deathmatch and I hate that game mode.
Evolve is crap. It's been crap since day one. All of the reviewers that I trust said it was crap too. It's a lot of walking around and not shooting anything. Very boring.
Overwatch is different from these two if you ask me. It has a level of polish that even Titanfall didn't have.
This is all the difference between the 60$ and the 40$.

As a response to the thread; Overwatch doesn't have to be different, people are going to play it, the same way people play Heroes of the Storm when it isn't vastly different from League of Legends. Is it going to be as popular or have the same player count as TF2? Who knows, but negative speculation never led to having any fun.
