What makes you think Overwatch will be different?

We have had lots of hyped fps titles that offered short-term fun and that had fanboys in a wild fury, for a month or two and then they bailed on them.

Titanfall
Star Wars battlefront
Evolve

Why is Overwatch different?  To me it looks identical and will follow the exact same path of those games, as in big for a couple of months and then huge player drops with the remaining few being milked to death with micro transactions.

Do gamers really never learn and are doomed to constantly repeat the same routine every time?  Seems like it to me!

I will say I can't speak for other games. But Overwatch has had an extremely long closed beta and now it has an open beta, and people are still interested. As for me, it is extremely fun. No one knows how well it will do but there is still a lot of interest and I guess we'll see what happens.

If you can get 50 hours of fun out of it, its money well spent. If you think its the fps savior you will be disappointed.

Played a bit of it during a stress test a couple weeks ago.  It doesn't seem different than Team Fortress and is nothing special.  I've yet to check it out during the open beta.

You can one shot people in Battlefield games, COD games, Counter-Strike games, TF2, etc. etc.... So yes, the game is fun, but one shotting is not an excuse for failure.

I play Titanfall and Evolve.  They still have enough people playing that I can get a match whenever I log in.  So if you are saying will Overwatch still be played years after it is released, then yes I suspect it will be.

Is Overwatch a ground breaking genre changing game?  No, no it is not.  It is simply a well made, fun to play FPS.  That is it.  Much like the literally hundreds of others out there.  While I like Overwatch and enjoyed the time I spent playing it, I prefer Battleborn right now.

So to answer your question directly, I believe it will be exactly like Evolve and Titanfall (I did not play much played SW:BF) and that, imo, is a good thing.

Here is a question for you; Are you a gamer?  Are you guilty of what you are accusing everyone that considers themselves a gamer?

I find flaw in your thought process that somehow the games you site are dead or in some way bad.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

i dont think it will be any diff then anything else out. and they are proving me right with the whole "oh you can play for free for 4 days" thing. I havent bothered and wont untill they offer it f2p. blizzard has enough of everyone's money.
    ive been warned .lol

These type of games always have a market because they are fast to get into and you can play for short bursts of time and then log off . People can join their friends for a short session and not have to worry about grinding money or materials to raid and such so these types of games have a huge player base that can rotate a few of these types of games. I think it will do well.

Are you trolling?  I mean sure they're all technically shooters, but the tf style team based shooter is noting like battlefront or titanfall.  Evolve is a 4v1 co-op game... I don't get it.

However you are correct that overwatch is not revolutionary.  The difference is that Blizzard will actually push the competitive scene which will keep it relevant for an extended period of time.

I hold no illusions about Overwatch. I don't expect it to be any different to any other game of that genre. Being Blizzard I expect it to be fairly well made, polished and relatively bug free. Other than that it's nothing we haven't seen before. That's not to say it won't be fun, if those are the games you enjoy playing.

It s not different that I can see, just better. It s a lot of fun, I haven t enjoyed a FPS of any type as much as I am OW.

As a person that lost touch with the FPS genre, I am happy to say that I have REALLY enjoyed my time in Overwatch and it's rekindled my love for the genre a bit. It's silly, goofy, and a LOT of fun.

I think its got a decent shot at being successful. The whole package seems to work really well, great graphics, wide variety of heroes that all play very differently, some pretty interesting game modes/maps. Good buy for $40.

Except it's not 40$ is it... It's 60$ USD (Before tax) or 90$ CAD (After Tax).

Really? Well still a bit better than those USD10,000 backer tiers for indie mmos that may or may not be released sometime in the future I guess.

I've been playing it for two days straight now, ignoring my World of Tanks subscription and EVE Online subscription entirely.

I'm having an absolute blast playing this game.  The heroes are nuanced and there's a lot of flexibility for changing the team on the fly to get the objective completed.

Personally, as a standard FPS player, I'm really enjoying the playstyle of Soldier 76 and McCree.

Now saying all of this, I also played and really enjoyed Titanfall.  It was a fantastic game and I'm not even sure why interest in it fell off so quickly.  It was a really really well made game, but these days it can take tens of minutes to get a match unless you want to play Windowlicker Deathmatch and I hate that game mode.

Evolve is crap.  It's been crap since day one.  All of the reviewers that I trust said it was crap too.  It's a lot of walking around and not shooting anything.  Very boring.

Overwatch is different from these two if you ask me.  It has a level of polish that even Titanfall didn't have.

The standard edition is 40.  Origins edition is 60

Ahhh I found it by sluthing the blizz site, (They make this difficult to find and really shove the 60$ at you) https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=153&v=aXUkAQyzb6g
This is all the difference between the 60$ and the 40$.

Shh, we don't want to offend anyone's misconceptions.

As a response to the thread; Overwatch doesn't have to be different, people are going to play it, the same way people play Heroes of the Storm when it isn't vastly different from League of Legends. Is it going to be as popular or have the same player count as TF2? Who knows, but negative speculation never led to having any fun.

What makes it different is Blizzards polish and massive marketing budget.

The game is decent but it's level of polish in comparison to competition (Battleborn, Paladins, Paragon, Giganitic, Lawbreakers and on and on....) is obvious.

Again the marketing budget Blizzard has for Overwatch is many times the entire development cost of the competition, it's impossibly hard to compete with that.
To add to that, Blizzard's long history of supporting their games after launch.
  • SharessSharess Member UncommonPosts: 293
I'll admit, their supporting of their games has always been really good. HOTS being free is great, but it was only free IMO because they had to compete with their free competitor LoL. Overwatch has to compete with other B2P titles such as BattleField (all versions) etc. but that's the nice thing, they're for the most part B2P and the F2P are not very well supported, hacks are rampant etc. We know from past games that Blizzard doesn't condone the hacks, prevents them etc.

Man I thought it would too. OW hits a sweet spot so sweetly. It does jump in and jump out so well.
