Is the vision of a game that can replace your life entirely dead?
Is the vision of a game that you can buy once and keep playing for decades dead?

The question here seems to be "is that how you defined MMORPG?"

    Evolve or die, relics.
Or...come play EVE where both visions are alive and well today.

Prediction: 10 years from now I'll still be able to play EVE and it still will retain these same two characteristics.

Assuming I'm alive and well of course.  ;)

Well the idea of long time progression and long investments is imo far from dead. However the reason we DON'T see it is because developers are a dime a dozen now, seems everyone and their goldfish is a wannabe developer and the market is being spammed with crap because of it.

At one time we could name the devs on a couple hands, now there are thousands and 99% of those thousands all have incompetent budgets. So when a market is flooded with crap and you have millions of gamer's waiting to waste money, there is a VERY good chance the crap will keep selling.

There is simply not enough quality developers to bring us mmorpg's or good quality mmo's,we have to rely on quality single player games with about 30-60 hours of playtime,so not much value from our 60-90 dollar purchases. That si why i choose to just wait  6 months to a year and purchase single player games on sale,it is the only way i can justify buying these games.
As for a QUALITY mmorpg,i'll just keep waiting, eventually 1 or 2 will pop out but i don't expect anymore than that.
Software companies probably suck; I work for one now, and it's a sharp contrast.  No one minds the store; no measurement of developer success takes place.  Highly effective developers are passed over for promotion, and ineffective slugs are promoted.  All based on personality.  Management looks to the PMs for developer feedback and since PMs have no accountability, they root for whoever kisses their ass the most.

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

I don't know, it seems very MMO I walk into I'm confronted with a "Newb zone" a "Collect 10 wolf pelt" quest and a map full of quest icons that I run around and collect without even reading before jumping on an instant travel object to "explore" the vast world of Quest icons. Its all the same.

Then I come home and play Dark Souls 3 and spend 2 hours "adventuring" a swamp that is small enough to walk across in 5 minutes while getting into heart pounding awesome fights with 2-3 monsters or other players.

Maybe there should be a Dark Souls MMO

Suppose a game developer read what you wrote.  Do you believe he would understand what you want in a game?  I don't think so.

Here's a way to think about whether the genre is dying or not in the west: How many games over the past 5 years have sucked you in enough to hit the level cap with multiple characters? How about hitting the level cap at all? Does the amount of games available really measure the current state of the genre?

The MMORPG I play doesn't have a level cap.  No, the amount of games doesn't necessarily measure the current state of the genre.

Alot of MMO's does not mean quality. Alot of games that are considered MMO's are things like the facebook games. Just look at the joke of whats constantly brought up here. Even the writers on MMORPG are doing it.

the reason the genre isn't actually dying in numbers is there's always new players coming of age to play video games. always a new group of people to try and scam out of some money. However , the reason the general feeling of gamers that the genre is dying is because of the business model all the mmo devs are adopting. greed and desire for short term gains have completely replaced the desire to make a good game, saturating the market with nothing but cash-grab attempts.
    ive been warned .lol

No. But MMOs don't need quality to survive. You may not like it .. but the market is there.

Hell yes! I got into the series recently myself and cant help but day dream about an MMO inspired by Dark Souls, or of the same IP. Then again, weynejr has a point. Many gamers said the same about Skyrim and we all know how that ended up.

Agree with everything you said though. Still holding out hope that some developer out there will realize that less is more. That making everything as simple and effort-free as possible all the time isnt entertaining or fun. For now, Pantheon is the only hope I see atm. Not for a Dark Souls MMO but at least an MMO that doesnt hand you every task on a silver platter.

Can't disagree, they keep chasing "rainbows" (first it was vampires, then console shooters, now it's VR) and not just focusing on their core strength.

They want to hit a homerun somewhere, I imagine it will be MOBAs next.

CCP guys...the IP isn't that popular, quit trying ro leverage it and go out and create a fun, new original game. (or focus on making EVE truly amazing.)

is that why candy crush and angry bird make a lot of money? The same applies to MMOs.

You can't fault them for trying to have some ambition and goes beyond their one pony trick. Sure, they are not very good at it, but at least they try, try and try.
