The point of this thread was nit picking more things, being more selective prevents you from actually experiencing products that in fact you could enjoy, but because the individual is used to this and that only, does not even consider or give a chance to something different to truly see its real value at the end. If you can find more products to enjoy others cannot that's your win.
How do you think I managed to enjoy gaming as much as I previously have without spending $ on anything new that came out through these 5 years, 4 months and 2 days? The more love one has toward gaming, the more ways he can find to enjoy all type of games for what they are. So, when dark and grim times come and many choose to change genres or simply take a break from gaming, that hasn't been my case.
We've seen evolution in the products over the last 5 years mainly in less $ to access them for less quality. So, they've received less $ for me for their lesser quality, but I've still been gaming as much as before and enjoying these products for what they are. My ability to adapt and enjoy lesser quality products while voting with my wallet gives me satisfaction that I'm winning the PvP war on the "consumer vs producer.
I voted for World of Warcraft to be the future of gaming because that was the game that took most $ from me over the last decade and because of that many clones using the same trinity and raid/gear progression came out, only of course with lesser quality for less $ to be accessed. I do hope though by now many realized that the success of WOW is credited a lot with the quality of its PvE and raiding that it offered alongside its PvP.
This genre just isn't what I am looking for. I have an itch to play MMORPG but the rehash games based on WoW are intellectually insulting. I am not interest in playing poorman single player games with people around me and advertising for pretty ponies.
I want to play virtual societies where players are the content and the world is a stage not just a prop for excessive stories.
If I just lowered my standards and/or expectations, closed my eyes to glaring inadequacies, and felt satisfied with 30 minute to 1 hour bite-sized portions that pretty much taste like the other bite-sized portions, I could join in the praises.
wow wow wow .. 30 min to 1 hour is NOT bite-sized portions. 15 min to 30 min is.
BTW, how is short and fun "lower" the standard. My standard is fun, not length. There are plenty of games that are shorter and more fun than long non-fun long gaming session.
For example, camping for 2 hours waiting in line most of the time is very boring. Heck, even more boring than playing candy crush. At least something is happening in candy crush.
Cell phone games are good for such short play sessions. MMORPGs can and should be designed for more.

"should"? Decide by you?
You know that there are short cell phone MMORPGs, right?
Decided by 3 brain cells with a mix of common sense.
And yes I've seen those phone abominations, lol.

I wonder if any discussion of what MMORPGs "should" or "should not" be is possible without that massive layering of individual's expectations.
"Ever MMORPG should obviously be just like the first one I ever loved, of course. Even if that's a vastly different animal than your first love. It's self-evident!!"
Such a pity that time and the industry failed to stop fifteen years ago.
if anything we as players should be MORE selective.. and actually hold the game companies and the devs to an even stricter set of guidelines for mmos. Even tho this reduces the quantity of mmos I will play/contribute to , I just cant settle for obvious monetization tactics and insulting game mechanics that are designed to farm me. For me, one of the big reasons I play a game is fun, and I cant have fun when I'm constantly having to look out for monetizing. At that point the game becomes " lets see how much enjoyment I can squeeze out of this without paying them a dime and when its all out I'll just quit" . This makes for a "players vs the devs" kind of situation and also makes most mmos feel very disposable from the beginning. I now can go into most mmos with the attitude of " dont like anything because the devs will just find a way to try and sell me this fun so might as well not even bother"
settling for whatever just so you can play a game is just sad IMO

Not quite, but ignoring what a genre does best (massive amounts of players all online simultaneously) is kind of silly, yes? Let's race the Indy 500 with our Prious, OK! Not built for that so why even bother?
Single player features fail miserably in utilizing what the genre is best at. Why? Because other genres execute them so much better.
MMO's strongpoint is that is has a shared world that everyone can play in. No world and you have MOBA lobby games. Shared worlds make for poor "epic hero stories" when everyone is the special hero.
I know it is unpopular in today's "everything MUST be correct" society, but there are reasons we categorize things into nice neat little labels. Shoving other features into it just messes everything up. If I pick up a Popular Science magazine, I don't want to see articles on fashion or entertainment news, even if those do sell more copies.

is that why The Division is a MMO defined by developers and websites?
is that why whales are powering the industry?
wait .. western ones don't even want to make mmorpgs anymore.
