I don't game hop, so there are only a few MMOs that I've played for a decent amount of time to be able to evaluate properly, plus a load of betas to give first impressions.
The MMO that evokes the most negativity is SW:TOR.
Most of my negativity comes from the endless missed opportunities. Combat? Lets stick to just the trinity and shove enrage timers on everything. Story? Same old generic crap, just presented better. World design? Lets ignore massive worlds and go linear crap. Classes? Na, screw unique, lets make them all play the same. Lightside / darkside? Screw it, lets make it purely fluff. Companions? Screw the investment, lets make them dull. Game engine? Lets take an unsuitable engine and hack it badly. PvP? Can't do world pvp due to engine. Space flight? Lets ignore doing it properly and put it on rails. Gear? Lets ignore player skill and go for ridiculous stat inflation.
Admittedly, some of my resentment for SW:TOR comes from the fact that it isn't SWG2.0, but I knew that going in. I just was (and remain) shocked at how Bioware didn't get a single feature of their game "right". In every single respect, they fell short of the mark which just shouldn't be possible with that large of a budget.
Yeah. Literally years of resentment resulted from my time in SWTOR. And it was the same for me, they took a guaranteed success and messed it up by designing a weak game that had no depth beyond it's arena combat.
MMORPG players are often like Hobbits: They don't like Adventures
Any game with with auto pathing and auto combat. I mean, is that even a game?

Wildstar? GW2? Are you kidding me...I understand everyone has their own opinion, but christ you could find about a billion attempts at MMOS that are far worse than those. I think there is a difference between not enjoying a game and a downright "Bad game"...Both Archage and BDO fit the category of being complete and very impressive games, however my experience was pretty awful with each.
Having myself played a lot of mmo's over the years I think the worst experience I've had was with Dark and Light:
Game was utterly unplayable and completely void of any other players or mobs.
I will also second Pirates of the Burning Sea. Close considerations would be for Darkfall2 (Can't remember what they named it). EQ2 was probably the single biggest let down for me, although not a bad game, just was so far from my expectations.
All those new games that came over the last 5 years, 4 months and 5 days that failed to open my wallet. None of them were the future for gaming from what we previously had, of course IMO.
I think my vote is Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising. Alot of junk comes in a close second, but this mess made even unfinished indie titles like Project: Gorgon or Xsyon look palatable.
Omg, I had totally forgotten about that disaster of a game. Now you've made me feel sad and angry at the same time. So much potential, what a waste that was.
You've also made me remember Earthrise, that might have been even worse.
Thank you

The games listed by some people here really made me /facepalm...
Let's use Wildstar as an example, because I disliked that game too and wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pool after having played the beta.
Ok, you don't like the game. I agree with you, I don't like it either.
Does it make it among the worst MMOs ever?
Sorry, but if you think that, you must have played VERY few MMOs, or you have selective memory problems. The amount of "pile of shit" MMOs that are so much worse than Wildstar it's not even funny is huge. Wildstar, despite its flaws, is polished, playable, artistically well done (in its specific style) and technically stable.
I could go along with many of the games quoted in this thread. Serious, guys, have you really, ever, played a REALLY BAD game?
Some good examples have been listed in the thread of really bad games, let me add a big one: Dark and Light. Not only it was a scam at the end, but it was a huge, steaming, pile of crap.
But games like Wildstar, Guild Wars 2 or SW:TOR, the worst ever? People who think that can only have very little experience with MMORPGs and have only played very few of them.
I think the problem is the term worst is somewhat subjective. You're
asking: which game had the lowest overall quality?
I think a lot of
people are asking: what game did I have the most viscerally negative
reaction to? In which case Wildstar with it's art style many people
found repulsive and it's combat would top a lot of people's lists.
What
if people want to grade on a curve? Sure Dark and Light was crap but
then again SWTOR spent $300 million and still had a lot of issues. If I wanted to
grade on quality per dollar spent on development SWTOR quickly rises to
near the top of a lot of lists.
I think what you're seeing is how people choose to define worst.
wow this 'Wildstar' must have been a really bad game.. most mentioned game so far.

Worst mmo for me is Eve because its pve combat is boring, and you are stuck as a spaceship. Heck, even STO has a spaceship mode & a ground mode. Well, it is p2w too, but personally i wouldn't care less about p2w.
hmm, hard to remember bad ones as i usually just uninstall and they are gone from my memory as well at that point. Salem comes to mind. Archage. BnS is pretty bad but far from worst ever. Come to think of it... I think every title for the last 3 years has been pretty much nothing but cash grab attempts, and should be avoided as as such.
I have played so many MMOs its often hard to keep track of them.. And while each one of them may have had some issue or another, I cannot say that I ever felt that one of them was the worst..
Regardless of whether or not I stuck with a game for years or days, I am thankful to those who crafted them.. My greatest issues were seldom with the games themselves, but with a developer's gameplay choices or a company's decision to cancel.. I mourn the loss of many fallen games that I enjoyed..
Here's hoping I never meet a game I would declare the "worst"..

I don't claim to have played every swinging MMO out there. I don't claim I know what your feelings are for a particular game. For all the games I did play, ArchAge was worse.
As the topic is so broad, I feel there are various copies/developers which share the limelight in this category.
Worst launch of all time : Shadowbane. The game had tons of potential, lots of followers and just sank as soon as open beta launched and their servers/coding turned about to be complete junk.
Worst integration of an expansion : SWG. The game was actually doing alright with an active population and dedicated fan base and then JTLS dropped and the game was pretty much on a downhill slope to the end.
Worst community : if MOBA's are allowed in the categoy, LoL has the most toxic players of any game I've ever seen. Or else, EVE Online. People will literally go out of their way to spend tons of time, just to **** with you.
Worst use of a popular IP : this one is tough as SWTOR and TESO both used hugely popular titles and brands to produce very marginal games. SWTOR is actually a solid RPG but lacks basically everything else and TESO to me is the personally disappointing title ever released. I spent thousands of hours over TES titles from III, IV and V and to see the Online version completely remove everything that made the games so addicting is a real shame.
Worst monetization : ArchAge. AA is actually a decent game but the pay-wall is so ludicrous that unless you're planning on dropping 20-30 month just to get by, there's basically no point in playing the game. SWTOR is actually a close 2nd to me on this as I was a box buyer/sub based and when returning to the game once it went F2P and having pay something like 80$ to unlock the gear I already had equipped was a joke.
One last personal hit : worst sales plan goes to Vircom and The 4th Coming. I actually still play this game every now and again but the original developer ruined the game before launch. They planned on selling server shares a-la UO but since development was slow and drawn out, they decided to start selling servers while the game was still in beta. To further that, once the game was finally "finished" , they decided to triple the price of the shards to the point where companies either had to charge a premium fee to their subscribers or fold, most companies folded and the ended up selling the IP.

Biggest letdown for me was Elder Scrolls Online and I was a huge supporter of the game development side. I was really excited for it. Playing with my wife, it just annoyed us. Each time we logged on we just wondered more and more why we were playing.
The games listed by some people here really made me /facepalm...

Did you even read the thread you posted in? He asked what people thought was the worst mmo they have played, which is their opinion.
For me I would say Archeage, because I went in with so many expectations and it didn't fulfill any of them. I gave up in a week of playing, which is the quickest I've given up on any mmo.
Probably Mortal Online. But over the last few years I've come to the conclusion that MMO's are just bad... it's the way progression is done grinding 1 - 60 or whatever then grinding gear is just so off puting for someone like me that actually has a life. I'd rather play an online TCG or play a couple of hours of destiny or overwatch or even Endless Legend than spend my time levelling in yet another fantasy based MMO. I'm done with that.
I got you all beat! The worst MMO that I ever played and am embarrassed that I even purchased it was The Sims Online! Oh, how quickly we forget EA's history in MMO's...
