Reviewing reviews

TheTruthToldTheTruthTold Member UncommonPosts: 107
Through downtime, I find myself curious of what the discussion around the scuttlebut is, when it comes to Black Desert Online. All that I can say is, it is defintely entertaining. Well, actually, I can say more.

People get so passionate about their reviews, and that passion is typically hate. Not to be confused with dislike. One reveiwer is even creating fake accounts, utilizing a voice modifier, to attempt to get his dislike of BDO more known. It has become the new fad. However, to say something positive, you are called "fanboi" or some such term of giggly factors.

One thing that caught my eye, however, was how determined some people are, to get their face on the hate band wagon, as the biggest poster child of "I told you so." The guy trolling the BDO forums with multiple forum accounts, posting his video time and time again, for stance. The most found common denominator of these: they have little to no accuracy in their reviews, and only suddenly start these, when they, themselves admitting, are concerned of losing viewers. After all, bad news and hate attracts attention easier than liking something.

So, eat your heart out, viewers. I find your reviews to be shallow and pedantic. They lack merit and scream, "look at me, only my opinion matters!" Your self-entitled approach is not the end all of every gamer, nor would we want that to be so.

With that said, take the reviews with a very wary approach. They are meant only to entertain, not inform. Thank you for reading.

An incomplete review is not informative. A review of rage quitting and claiming doom, because they are afraid of not being the best, is not informative. A review that includes, "My videos are more important," because he could not allocate time properly, like an adult to both play a game and do his other hobby, is not informative. Actually, they are. They inform me, that these persons lack the maturity to be trusted with propper judgement. Imagine someone reviewing a world class chef, calling him a scrub, scarfing the meal in 5 minutes, because he did not like that the desert was not double portioned.

i think your just choosing to watch those type of bad reviews..theres plenty out there that shows the true awfulness of rng and the crap-hill of cons that greatly outweigh the pros..

And no game before had RNG. If you were fully informed, the complaint about RNG, actually circles aound to consequence of failure. The game punishes failure of the more expensive ideals of the game with severity, and yet, nothing close to old school games, which so many scream for. For example, an item you farmed for all week, that had an 8 hour spawn, would then need to be crafted. If failed, you risk to lose it all, and start over. That game: everquest. This game allowes many alternatives for the rng failure repercussion. The only thing, so far, that does not, is accessory items, which you can failstack. This was brought to you by GI Joe, the more you know. GO JOE!

The game gets pretty emotional reviews from both sides, which is natural because it's different.

Me personally I was all over it before it released, then I was really against the cash shop, but then after encountering even worse monetization models in the game I was playing (BnS), and weighing the pros and cons of how Daum is doing it, I rationalized that as it is right now is actually not so bad.

So I started playing it again (I had played it on a trial and the RU version), and honestly the game is pretty orgasmic for a long-time MMO player.

I'm trying to restrain myself from making gushing posts about the game, mostly cause I'm not at endgame yet and that's where it all seems to fall apart for a lot of people (although I will be soon with 2 weeks of xp buff and blackstones dropping off everything).

So even with just me, you've had someone gushing and raging and now on the verge of gushing again.

All of this is a good thing, I think.  It proves the game is interesting, if nothing else, even to the haters.

Excellent thread because it really explores psychology. Negative peoples strategy is to keep other people at a distance, unhappy people often act haughty or superior. They can act very opinionated and are often very judgemental of other people’s behavior. This is what I notice anyways.

When I don't like or I am considering quiting a game I don't start screaming to four winds how bad and how I hate that game. People are diferent, but as a gamer, it's something that I don't understand.

If you don't like the game move on, focus on something positive.

Unless there is a hidden agenda behind those negative posts ....

    Agree with OP

I praised BDO before launch, just like I praised ArcheAge before launch. Right now, I think both games are equally horrible for the exact same reasons. I think it's safe to say there will never be a successful Korean game launch in the West.
That is mostly because the western playerbase plays their games differently than the way the korean play the same games.

Many here like to mindless gank, while there they seem to manage to work together and not be a nuisance to any living being they come across.

Meh, I take reviews for what they are, people's opinions which I rarely agree with nor hold much regard for. (unless they agree with my opinion of course)  B)

When I read about people's impressions of a game it is not the adjectives that I focus on but their descriptions of what they do in a game. How they spend their time and what is interesting and enjoyable. You can gauge the level of honesty and also how much of it is going to be something you might enjoy by reading reviews that describe activities. Merely waxing poetic about a game is useless to me and I really don't believe those folk who just say its great without anything to back that statement.

If you are taken in by reviews then perhaps you have been accepting the wrong type of reviews or only focusing on those with a multitude of clever but ultimately shallow impressions. You must always read things with your own interest in mind so that you can decide whether in spite of the negatives you have read whether the game still appeals to you.

I don't understand why a negative review about anything is always discouraged. If positive reviews are allowed so should negative reviews be. If you promote something to someone, they buy it and are disappointed, do you expect them to just suck it up? I also don't think anyone is gaining viewers in the long run by being negative about games. Just look at the sad state of gaming and how famous youtube reviewers give the impression that gaming is better than ever.
I don't think they are discouraged. It's mostly the "type" of negative review that people seem to react to.

The reviews that come across as a rant, maybe even decrying something that is "working as intended".

Sort of like going to a slasher film and giving it a negative review because it has gore.

Any idiot can do a review and some of those idiots have idiot followers just because those are the times we live in. Loud and obnoxious apparently is attractive to some people.

Aggregate review sites like Rotten Tomatoes for movies and Metacritic are a step above that in that they at least attempt to select sensible reviewers to count in their aggregate scores and the overall score shows patterns and trends. But even those still have to be taken with a grain of salt. I've enjoyed watching some rotten movies and have been bored by certified fresh ones and the same with Metacritic and games.

What's funny is that everyone should know this and still they make a huge deal when one single YT "reviewer" random dude farts.

The well informed usually have reviewers that they go to for reviews due to similar interests and like minded perspective of things. I go to Angry Joe, there has only been a few times where we didn't see eye to eye on something. Who listens to random people ramble?

Reading random internet reviews doesn't help solidify your opinion unless the source is credible to you and the integrity of the review isn't ruined. With that being said...

Black Desert is a terrible game.

So you like following a loudmouth YT celebrity that is "like minded."

Yeah, echo chambers are the best way to be well informed... not.

Exactly. I try to listen to what they are saying not their verdict based on what they say.

So if they say that a game is long and they think that's bad then that might not be bad for me. If they say it's grindy then that's a plus for me.

If they complain about graphics that is usually a non-issue for me (art design is more important).

In the end I usually make up my own mind based on what I'm looking for in a game.

I like to watch reviews AND gameplay then base my opinion on what I've seen and heard/read if there's no possibility of a trial to check out a game.

Till you understand that reviews are simply opinion based, there's no harm is watching/reading them. If however you get reviewers that think they are talking for the majority of the people, ignore them.

Just thought that I would mention, one of these reviewers that loudly proclaimed his animosity for BDO and rage quit: well, he is back. Welcome back pvt. Wiggles. MMO's are not good streaming games for entertainment, unless the person is just that entertaining. It is easier to make a flashy exit, when the shine of newness wears off, only to return later, quietly and unnoticed, or so they think.
