Guild Wars 2 - Apathy Sets In

Guild Wars 2 had alot of potentional at release. It was a great MMORPG expereince that offered many 100's of hours of entertainment. Sadly enough they didn't do much after the big release, which was at the time, one of the most hyped up and commercially successful releases of an MMORPG.

The game wasn't for everyone and Anet should have understood that instead of wasting years experimenting. I was fine with Anet's experiments at the start, you know ''a company willing to try out new concepts, that's great!''... however after a while, it started to become clear than Anet didn't seem to have an idea as to where they wanted to take the game. We have been running in circles for years now with systems getting reworked over and over and over again.

I haven't logged in to a single MMO for a month, and really don't care enough to do it any time soon. The only one I'm paying for is EQ2 due to the housing (landmark is crap and I regret buying a founders pack). And even then... its more than just apathy though. It's boredom. I'm having more fun playing single player games I've already played like Witcher 3 with mods.

This is the problem with this game. ANET is the problem.

I really like the game, but their content droughts make blizzards look good in comparison. Anet is killing their own game.

At least they finally showed Colin Blowhanson the door. To little to late though.
    But, that smile....... /s

It's not the state of the game that has caused Apathy. We've see it all the time here. A bad patch or expansion and people rage on the forums. That's not Apathy.  When that happens, it's because players want the developers to fix it. But what happens when the game goes wrong and no one believes the developers can correct it? That's when the apathy sets in. When players lose faith in the developer's ability to create the game they wanted to play, they start shrugging and walk away. That's where GW2 is. HoT was it for me. I reluctanly bought it thinking it can't be all that bad.......it was.

I think that opinion made more sense 3-6 months ago than now.
With WvW receiving a boost of interest and changes that made HoT easier to navigate.

I doubt that the revenue picture will change much in the next quarter.
I have been logging an average of 5 hours per day (grabbing ascended boxes from daily fractals and working on legendaries/precursors) and I work full time.

meanwhile people passed that post and still talk about 200 lost twitter accounts and declare a game dead based on their personal tastes .

btw, i don't play the game atm cause my personal tastes are elsewhere, but i don't call the game bad or ugly cause it doesn't fits to me atm.

I ended up buying GW2 about two months ago. I got a few characters to around level 30 and just stopped. It's just so mediocre. The questing (which isn't really questing, but it is) was more boring than WoW's craptastic questing. There was very little in terms of making your class feel like your own. Yea, you can mess around with different weapons, but you have no control over your skills, except utilities.

The dungeons are laughably easy, the PvP is also a joke. Unranked isn't even PvP. It's just people swapping on C and grinding out PvP levels. WvW is a total mess of constant zerging. There's a single raid, which I never felt compelled to level up enough to do.

All together the game just feels lazy. Like the article mentioned, in Anet's quest to create a unique game, they forgot to create a unique game.

Every time I try to login I can't stick around for more than hour before I realize all I've done is chat with people and not actually play the game. Because the game is too damn boring to play.

I'm just over here, logging in every day, having a great time. Maybe you should change the article title to "MMORPG players: Ennui and Entitlement Sets In"

I haven't even launched the game since the Overwatch beta but you are genuinely wrong about some things. There is no questing, if you think the hearts system is questing, good luck finding a single "quest" in HoT maps then. You have my blessings.

You, as every other player complaining about the lack of control over skills tend to forget that you have traits. Which is what defines a build, not the weapons you choose.

Dungeons are scrapped in favor of fractals (I know, I don't like it either). Dungeons were challenging at launch, then the power creep set in. That's why they feel laughably easy now.

The PvP is not a joke and it's pretty skillful if you know what you're doing. Also what you're describing is not unranked, that's hotjoin.

Also, every form of massive PvP ends up with whoever has the biggest numbers, let's be honest here. Same thing happened in ESO, same thing has/is happening in real life. It's just the path of least resistance and people like it this way. Hell, even EVE Online wars involve massive zergs battling it one another.

Idk what makes you think the game feels lazy. Is it terrain design? Which arguably is one of the best in MMORPGs or is it sound effects? For which people complained are too much and they had to shrink them down. Or is it the soundtracks? Which everyone agrees are a top notch with few very memorable pieces. Or the voice over NPCs. Or the wardrobe system or the dye system or the achievement system. What is it exactly that feels lazy to you?

And as always, if you personally can't find something to do in a game, maybe it just means that the game is not for you, rather than making it look like trash hm? Most of your points are bogus abotu the state of the game.

Oh and I forgot to mention, there are more than 1 raid. Idk where you saw it's just one raid. 1 raid wing yes, with handful of raids though.

We all stop playing games at some point. I stopped playing Marvel Heroes for a while, haven't touched Eve Online in years, stopped playing Brade and Soru for a bit, everyone has those moments. Something will re-invigorate interest as always, and you'll jump back into those games only to get bored after 5 months writing the same article again.

    This is not a game.

I think a reasonably sized core group of GW2 players were also GW1 fans. They want to see Tyria, Cantha, and Elona fleshed out.

A potential problem I see in the game is that they've strayed away from what interested their core players and delved into other things. What they need to do is get back to their roots.

This, so much this. I was a HUGE Nightfall guy, when it was revealed that they will never bring out an Elona expansion my reaction was fuck you. Never looked back again. They also took a royal dump on their roleplaying fanbase time and time again, said to everyone - "What is lore? Does it taste like chicken?" and basically no vaselined the old GW1 fanbase until we all ended up wearing Depends and needing a bed made of tampons. There is only so many times you can piss in someone's face and call it rain. I used to love A-Net, they were the folk from Blizzard who still made good games and left not to be corporate and what did they do? Become corporate once again - and a WORSE company than Blizzard.

Its a damn shame, even worse? Blizzard treats its playerbase EONS better, even the roleplayers. As far as I'm concerned about Anet? The company can die in a napalm bombardment. They are the DC comics of videogames but with less of a clue about what made them famous and ashamed of their past.

Worse yet? City of Heroes with was killed to fund GW2 and Wildstar. If anyone from A-net is reading this thread, this middle finger is for all of you.

    GW2.
Although it "cured" a lot of the annoyances of older games,it also introduced a multitude of it's own new annoyances.
It still has systems in the game in a endless beta state, like underwater combat for instance.
It also denies to incorporate in the game, systems that are industry standards, like a freakin' customizable UI,or saving builds,it's 2016 ffs.
It has a dev team that reacts to player feedback with the pace of a turtle. When they don't ignore said feedback completely, that is.
And after HoT,it took a turn towards harder, mainly group oriented, open world content, that personally I don't enjoy that much playing.I enjoy that kind of difficulty in instances, but for open world stuff I expect more relaxing mildly hard stuff.
And the latest addition of the bandit champs and legendaries in the old maps,as a prelude for the upcoming continuation of the game's story narrative, does not give me the impression that Anet's got the message.

Even with the mess HoT has created with the classes and balance and the power creep, it still has the best most skill based pvp of any mmo I have played. I keep searching for something better but no one has made it yet.

Prior to GW2 release I was so hyped, got the collector's edition (the Char statue is still guarding my underwear drawer), but the game really let me down in terms of feeling like I was playing in a world and advancing a character. ANET hates rewarding players, and every time anything came close to being rewarding, they nerfed it because they wanted to maintain the "non-grind" grind. Dungeons suck, everyone skips everything (because it's boring) and goes straight to bosses (which are also boring and give practically no reward now), WvWvW is a boring zergfest of boringness, sPvP is fun, but not any different than any other battleground in any other MMO that has them, the questing/event system is MORE grindy than doing regular quests - instead of killing 10 rats, you have to kill rats until the bar fills up . . . soooo 50 rats.

Basically everything they said the game was going to be ended up being the opposite. I still remember the stupid manifesto they shared while they were in hype mode, jokes was on us.

The new content every 2 weeks was clearly a ridiculous pace to release content, but I really liked that they tried and that is was something different even if the content wasn't super amazing - this was probably the high point of GW2 for me.

You took the word right off of my mouth bro! It is the very reason I stop playing GW2 since HoT launched.
I as a royal fan of GW1 and played all expansions up until the day GW2 launched. It is such a shame GW2 can't bring back the magic of GW1 to its core players.

Well, you can't please everyone. At least A.Net is trying. They are doing a bunch of stuff in WvW and keep asking opinions and having polls. At least they are doing something. Now with the new system of bounty hunting, it does make things more interesting. It is also introducing the next thing coming into GW2.

BDO, which I played for an hour, felt is what a total waste of computer resources. BDO is a client server style with much on the client, that means hacks and stuff are easy to do and figure out. Why Korean companies do that is to use the smallest servers possible.

Meh, I think i played GW2 for like 4 days. The only MMO I found less under whelming was Wildstar, think I played that for a few hours. They seemed like the same game to me. Both were just terrible example of AAA cookie cutter games on rails. Apathy is right on, but its not always the players faults, there is just only so many times you can play the same game with a new name and a few new flashy bells n whistles that don't make it any better. MMOs lost me when they stopped allowing for an entire array of builds, other things to do, meaningful crafting, open worlds, etc. I want options, not to be like every other toon of the same level/race/class/etc.

Heh I basically felt like: Meh - GW2... I don't really care enough to respond anymore. Anyway here goes: They no longer value casuals/story/grindfree content == They no longer reap value from me!

We dont need casuals in our games!!! Errm... Well we DO need casuals to fund and populate our games - But the games should be all about "hardcore" because: We dont need casuals in our games!!!

There just is not a lot of new content, spvp is not nearly as entertaining as ANet banked on (and oddly enough CONTINUES to bank on), and outside of spvp game balance is among the worst in the genre.

WvW has been getting attention as ANet finally realized it is the main draw for part of their playerbase. Unfortunately, I don't think it will stop that gamemode from dying completely (on the contrary, this second batch of world links has produced some absolutely terrible matchups in t1 and t4 - half the damn matchups!). On top of that, introduction of HoT stats, Runes of durability, the revenant, elite specs, and HoT food and oil has absolutely murdered WvW class balance. Every single group has to run boon duration and revenant heavy, doing anything else is suicide. Every single roamer has to run a complete cheese condi build, if you don't your opponent will. Conditions, boon duration, revenant hammer, runes of durability, mussels gnashblade, ferocious stones/oils, elite specs, and resistance all need massive nerfs to get back to making a more balanced gametype.

PvE players continue to get pushed towards doing raiding as it is the only pve receiving new content. This is not terrible as it is my understanding that the raid is quite fun, but caters to the hardcore almost exclusively. There were no new dungeons in the expac, old dungeons were made even more boring/easy thanks to elite specs being so powerful. Fractals are still around and even got some attention with the HoT release, but afaik no new fractals have been added since 2013 (though cliffside got some changes in the last quarterly). For those that like world content, there have not been any new world bosses in ages, though shatterer did get a rework at the beginning of 2016 (and is still very easy, just less so than before). The four new HoT maps are excellent in nearly every way, but there are only four of them. PvE is just a big story of 'not enough new content' everywhere you look.

SPvP is probably the most balanced it has ever been, which is impressive. It does not have the same balance problems WvW has, and every class has a spec that can be competitive (not all classes are top tier, but this is still a massive improvement). The problem with spvp is that build diversity is at an all time low, once again caused by the elite specs being too powerful compared to all other specs. SPvP is still mainly focused on conquest, where somehow there is actually LESS content than 3 years ago (one map was removed). The last new conquest map came out in 2013. The new gamemode, stronghold, does come with one new map, but nobody I know cares for it at all.

After playing Heavensward at release, I didn't think any mmo expansion pack could have less content. HoT has far less, and unlike FFXIV, they have not been adding more in updates. GW2 has needed a substantial content update for months.

I am still hopeful that Mike O'Brien can fix some of this, since he took over he has already made some serious improvements. I am concerned, though, that this will not be fixed. From the leaked living story 3 plans, it sounds like we will get a new spvp map and a new fractal. That is not enough. I feel like this expansion was overpriced.
