It is true, AAA games don't release alpha builds for testing, they release fake "alphas" "betas" for closed demos. Sorry if Star Citizen success hurts your feelings, its just the way it is. Ah, and it's just the beginning, so ready your jimmy´s.

I guess the betas that I have been paid to do for a big publisher was a figment of my imagination.
Star citizens "success" doesn't hurt my feelings. Raising a shitload of money means nothing until you release the game. You release it and it's everything they promised then I will be impressed
Betas are like demos 10 years ago, they serve only 2 purposes, test network infrastructure and promote the game. They are complete games released as "betas" / "alphas" to iron some kinks. Star Citizen is in a real alpha state that would never be played outside a controlled test group. Game development 101.
I don't think so, besides it was not an early public alpha for long.
It got 1 million purchases less than a month after entering beta, and with how many hours many people already paid Alpha version I think it was.
There was no tracking of hours played, though, so we will never really know.
ARK: Survival Evolved also beats Star Citizen by huge margin, but I must confess my ignorance I know it's in early access but have no idea if it should be called Alpha or Beta.

If they release it and squadron 42 is fun to play I'm happy. Everything Else is a bonus. Not to many story based Sci-fi pilot games around.
It was a nice rant, full of deceptive claims and illegal actions, which just adds more proof against them in a court of law. I got similar stuff from companies that I filed lawsuits against in the past. Standard shit of companies trying whatever to defend themselves.
But here's the thing that Erillion did not realize and in he thought, that such letter would do something good for his cause.
There is now the proof of bad faith attitude and deceptive claims in their advertising, in their emails to backers, to the press and now even to Paypal.
CIG knows that they are screwed and while they obviously will do and say whatever in matters of defense, they know that cannot afford someone leading to the court, because that would destroy them for good and that's why they decided to give him the refund anyway, just as they are always going to give the refund to anyone that go further and persist asking it, threatening a lawsuit.
And if you are wondering what is this proof of bad faith at this point, after discussed tireless in the internet in many forums, you are very very uninformed and/or has been keeping your head buried in the sand. So... just go learn and inform yourself better about consumer rights ok? Tip: And about how CIG made/performed their "poll" that they have been using to justify their actions. Another tip: And about how they have been acting with deceptive claims way after the change of the scope, making totally invalid the idea that "because the guy pledged more after that" means that they could do whatever they want, and deceive him how many times they wanted.
That this goon attitude be an example. Seriously. If you go further and threat a lawsuit they will refund you. It was always this way and will continue to be. Period.
"I got similar stuff from companies that I filed lawsuits against in the past. Standard shit of companies trying whatever to defend themselves." Do a lot of suing, do you? Threaten lawsuits often? I had a crazy uncle who used to threaten lawsuits to every company that he could. Are you the crazy uncle in the family?
Already the biggest and most popular real alpha test of gaming history. Another milestone for the books. Easy.
I can't imagine the "biggest and most popular real alpha test of gaming history" to be a particularly competitive bracket. I mean, pretty sure most alphas for most things aren't supposed to attempt to be big or popular in the first place, what with most of them taking place behind closed doors because they're supposed to be for products in development not yet ready for the open public and all.
ROFL! They tried to brag but instead said that in over 7 months each player averaged a mere 5 hours of gameplay! People like to brag about big numbers until they boil down to itty bitty numbers haha!

Just off the top of my head, Overwatch had 9.7 million playes with 81 million hours played in 7 days.
You are talking about the Overwatch Beta test. Babuinix is talking about Alpha testing. Overwatch had no Public Alpha Phase.
Neither had Minecraft (see Minecraft Wikipedia- first public version was a Beta). Correction: Minecraft had a public Alpha phase. Thank you @Vrika for the relevant link: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Version_history According to this website http://minecraft-de.gamepedia.com/Alpha the game had 900k copies sold and 2.75 million registered players in December 2010 (=Alpha 1.2.6)
So ... my guess is that Minecraft Alpha so far was the biggest Alpha test.
The impressive thing about the numbers is that they apparently got 300,000 trying out the alpha, and I mean that with no sarcasm. That's a great turn out. The retention / hours played is not so good but you can't have it all. When they get some more features and mechanics in place and the stability is improved I'm sure the hours will start knocking up.
That's 5 hours per backer on average since that time. Already unimpressive by itself, but the median hours played will probably be far lower still as there are always the few people who want to "test" every little corner of alpha material or youtubers who want to shoot footage etc. So, not wowed at all sorry.
Also, where I work, customers get a refund when they're unhappy with their purchase without some elaborate lawsuit and / or blame game. Because well... you kind of want your customers to be happy about you as a company. Guess CIG hasn't really understood that.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
Where you worked .... Were people able to get a refund for three (!) years ?
Software is often not refundable at all in shops (fear of software piracy and illegal copying). Hardware usually has a one year warranty/refund period. Three years was an unusually long period!
And compared to a typical ZERO hours from ZERO players (as almost no one is doing public Alphas) the 1.5 million hours and 300.000 players is "not bad" ;-) for an Alpha test.
Or what do you mean about no public alpha phase? If you mean people had to pay to get into their Alpha, then I think that was correct.
Hello Vrika,
thank you for that link ... i stand corrected. There was a Minecraft Alpha available for the public.
Seems like i was reading an abbreviated WIKI entry that had only this sentence >>>On 11 December 2010, Persson announced that Minecraft was entering its beta testing phase on 20 December 2010 >>>
According to this website http://minecraft-de.gamepedia.com/Alpha the game had 900k copies sold and 2.75 million registered players in December 2010 (=Alpha 1.2.6)

Having a refund policy for the last 3 years is irrelevant, there hasn't been a proper testing stage for people to get an idea of the larger game until 7 months ago. Perhaps people have waited patiently for 3 years and then tried for 2.1, 2.2 or whatever and just been disappointed that this is what they've got after all this time.
If they have $51 million past the $65 million they need then I'm sure they can grant refunds without running into problems.

Reading your posts always makes me think of the phrase "I reject your reality and substitute it with my own".
