I feel like you kinda got it the wrong way around...
From all accounts Landmark was being used as a basis to build tools etc... for EQN, not the other way around, I would actually be amazed if there was any work at all done on EQN up until when they shut it down.
In reality what they were proposing with EQN was a long shot and probably would have ended up being a huge mess once you get hundreds of thousands of players into the servers... Quests bug out at the best of times, but having infinite variable events based off game world events and changes would open a game up to an indescribable amount of possible bugs.
Not only that but the featureset the originally boasted was out of reach for some of the bigger companies.. let alone SOE which let's face it.. wasnt in the best place as it was.
That being said they released bits and pieces of landmark, probably with the intention to use it as a testing ground for the inhouse engine they had developed to see what it was capable of etc.. for EQN, when reality set in that the things they wanted to do weren't a possibility and they didn't have the money to even try... EQN got shut down before it even really got started.
Edit - to put it into perspective... blizzard said 0 about titan nothing at all.. even to this today won't confirm what it was going to be. SoE showed a tech demo of "EQN" which was probably just done inside of landmark using assets that may have ended up in EQN
I don't think Daybreak will be around that long. Most of us were hoping for EQNext, but of course they canceled that because they said it was not fun. My reply to that is what did they expect? They let go most of the top design staff when they acquired the company. My immediate thought is, the company is being run by a bunch of imbeciles who don't have the faintest idea what works in the gaming industry.
As to landmark, it was never designed to be a stand alone game, so how well do you think it will do released by itself?
Talk about damning a game with faint praise... ^^ Landmark was always a work in progress... In other words much promised, with much less delivered.
I was one of the founders, back in the day. In that time, I saw some really AMAZING things that some people managed to do with it.
One was a huge battle cruiser, and another was a crystal castle. To this day, I'm still in awe of the talent, skill and creativity it took to create those.
That having been said, Landmark is a classic example of abandon ware, looking for a time and place to happen. Its not something I'd choose to spend any more time on.
Atm. I'm just sitting here being happy about i won the game on a Twitch stream long time ago... Someone else paid my part of money for this... i sure didn't. With that said I've never spent more than 30 mins at a time in it, is WAS / IS? so poorly optimized! it's INSANE!
I don't think Landmark is 25% of what they wanted it to be. But hey, since EQN got smothered with a pillow why would Daybreak/SOE keep developing Landmark? It was already obsolete before it launched properly, why spend more on it when you could gain some more from it? I own Landmark and will never launch it again, what an unfinished cashgrab they released, yes, even for 10 bucks it is a cashgrab, bah!

First off.... Steam reviews much like Meta Critic user revives should only be considered as a indicator of what the loud minority thinks. At best they can indicate what the core community thinks. In general they are about as useful to get nuance as trying to paint the mona lisa with a sweeping brom.
For 10 bucks it is fair... For 10 bucks i expect about 2-4 hours of entertainment from a product. You can very easy get that from landmark.
But beyond that it is not really anything. You need to have a very niche interest to find much , if anything in the game beyond that. Now the reason it get so bad steam revives is because all the angry EQ:N people have spent the last couple of years tearing it a new one. A very mature thing to do indeed. Unfortunately they will ofc get their wish. DayBreak as a studio is dead. It will keep the current roster in maint mode and push out some cheap mobile games before having paid for it self and then quietly become harvested for anything left of value and have it´s brands sold off.
This is kinda sad... Because both EQ;N and H1Z1 had some serious promise. Heck it did not even get to dignified end of being eaten by EA...
I couldn't get 5 minutes of enjoyment out of it - which makes it a very bad deal.

A lot of personal opinions from a lot of different people saying they didn't have fun with the game might be evidence, even if not 100% proof, that the game is probably not that good a game for most people.

No. Blizzard wasn't stupid enough to talk about the game's design when they lacked even the most basic game design. Blizzard and SOE both wanted to make the next installment... neither bothered to put together a game design before beginning production (typical AAA studio practice over the past decade)... SOE talked about a game when they had no actual clue what they were going to build while Blizzard kept denying the existence of one.
This has nothing to do with hype or when studios talk about the game. This has everything to do with players, for the past 12 years now, buying into MMOs JUST BECAUSE either a studio that's had one successful game (though SOE BOUGHT the rights to EQ1 they didn't design the game in house) or they want to see a "big name dev" working on a game without realizing that dev didn't design the game they worked on.
Blizzard was smart enough to know that they didn't have a game design. Sure they may have wasted a few million but they were making insane amounts of money per month... it didn't even put a dent in their finances (especially writing most of it off as a business expense during tax season lol).
Design. Not "when they talked about it". Design is what determines whether a game will be successful. We've seen how many games wait until a year to a year and a half before they release to come out? They all suck, too. ESO is the latest... I mean they sold the idea of the Thieves Guild being launched MONTHS after the game launched and they didn't even have a design for that!
We gamers need to start DEMANDING game designs before we invest in games. Plain and simple. Without a design the game will very likely suck. Still haven't seen one that hasn't so I'm sure the chance of succeeding without a full game design prior to development is less than 1%.

For my money they promised EQ Next . I hope they will fail and will go bankrupt .These companies not only make shit games but they also don't have player Trust.... That's a pretty wild jump in comparison! You're talking about the difference in appearance of something that still tastes great vs having no entertainment in a game you put hopes into.
I'll say this: I stopped worshiping AAA studios/developers/publishers a few years ago. They stopped making AAA games so what is there to appreciate? What was the last AAA game? WoW? EQ2? Which one launched last? I think WoW did (I didn't play WoW... EQ1 baby here and played that for about 8 years or so lol).
lol this is probably one of the worst sandbox games on the market let alone provides great content. If you want a sandbox you buy Ark , 7 days to die , planet explorers , stranded deep, etc I can literally keep going and going. SOE/Daybreak jumps on all bandwagons way to late and haven't released anything of quality for many many years.
This isn't a game. It's a module to an unfinished and abandoned project. It's absolutely appalling that they sell this. Without EQ Next being made anymore, this isn't even worth looking at.
The build tools are difficult but I find that largely because of how complex and detailed building can be. Overall I Feel bad for this game as I find it to be far more a game of wasted potential. So many great systems and amazing visuals that just ended up feeling half baked as a whole.
for $10 it's definitely worth anyone's money as you can easily get that much enjoyment out of just building alone.
Combat is a bit lackluster? Sure is and that's only the beginning. I'm sorry but I feel this review is a complete miss. Landmark was conceived as a companion to EQ Next and an opportunity to be involved in the creation of that game. It has largely been abandoned Daybreak. Many of the features have not been nor will they be fully realized. The game feels dead because it is dying a slow death. Avoid this game.
I have some salt on this one. I paid into it a few years back when it was more of a test bed for EQ next.... Boy I'm glad I only got the 19$ pack....... You don't think they will give me a 9$ refund do you?... I guess not.

Playing ESO on my X-Box
