Returning to Tyria

I do not take a decision like returning to Guild Wars 2 lightly, especially when I have such a love/hate relationship with the game, but there is one overarching feature that may just overshadow all of my issues with the MMORPG, and some of these are pretty deep-rooted indeed.

It's always interesting to see people say they love exploring but don't like the new HoT zones because they have a ton to offer someone who just wanders off the beaten path. Exploring the zones is actually one of my favorite things to do and I'm still finding new things. I'm even starting to like Tangeled Depths which is a bit of a nightmare to figure out on first blush. Having spent a fair amount of time in it though it makes a lot more sense to me now and it's one of my favorite maps.

Zerg trains sound like the dynamic events that are an integral part of the game. For me it's a thrill joining a group that takes you through so much of the game and makes leveling easy to forget about as you get caught up in the event. Players are free to jump into them and out of them at will.

They're revamped a lot of classes and Ranger is now my strongest class along with Necro. I agree there is a great player base and it's pretty easy to guest to other servers to play, as well as transfer. I do it all the time if I need help with an area, I will guest to a highly populated server and usually help will come.

The nice thing about the level 80 boost is the ability to apply it to any character as an unlimited trial in a high zone to see if you like the class at max level.

Also a fan of GW2, but not a fan of HOT. Really disliked the progress/rewards for staying as many people mentioned in the past they due to population and server instability people were kicked from populated maps to less populated maps and lost all the potential rewards and had to restart. I liked how they were removed and instead rewards were adjusted to each event. It took a while and by then maps were quite depopulated especially during off hours. I am so-so on the mastery tracks for one thing it really makes things easier in game though thought only pact mastery and gliding were the most important ones besides the requried HOT ones. I am a fan of track rewards though.

For opinions on returning players simply play the way you used to in the classic GW maps and explore. For HOT maps you can build your characters simply to run and glide through maps and simply skip the events and just do whatever you want. Make builds for speed running and decreased damage taken and simply run through it all like a race, while exploring the new maps. Simply put in most cases it is more efficient to simply harvest nodes instead of fighting enemies as the reward is at least double except in the case of the map meta, which may be break even or more.

Recently quitted the game for the 2nd time. In my opinion gw2 possessing one of the best and charming character designs amongst all other non-existent perfect mmos. I too hated the poison cloud and thorn themed atmosphere as well as all the other things that you've listed perfectly.
I guess as a returning player i would suggest doing PvP or WvW where the game shines the most. PvE is a complete mess for me and i would'nt ever touch my hands again on any PvE that Gw2 offers ( not even the so called Raids ) . Just having a look on my charming skins and punching some thieves in WvW seemed the best way to spend time for me.
I dont have the habit to socialize too intensely with people in cyber-environments that one day should i quit they are a nothing but a distant memory vanishing quickly in time.

Never had more of a love/hate relationship with a game more than this for the same reasons.

After being disappointed with the mess that is BDO, and not wanting to return ESO ever again I was just pondering returning to GW2 within the past several days. I could care less about pve though, as I'd spend 100% of my time in WvWvW if I could. Currently forcing myself through missed WoW content with gag worthy tab target combat. Yet, in the next week I haven't decided to either go back to GW2 or Eve Online. Any thoughts on the pvp changes to the game since launch would be greatly appreciated (also not the instanced pvp).

I guess I'm a little lost on the purpose of this article.

Regardless, GW2 gets a bit of a bad rap. Is it a great game? No. But it's not the titanic mess people make it out to be, either. It *can* be fun. It can also be incredibly boring. But I'd argue that they do a lot of things right... and for new players, in particular, it's amazing to see a world so seemingly full of life, populated by a thick layer of fairly interesting quests, and a map that seems built for exploration.

If my current dabbles in ESO don't work out (and so far, I've got to say, I am pretty bored) - I may go back to GW2 and give it another crack.

HOTs story did seem a bit weak, the single campaign was acceptable but the background felt a lot worse then the original game... Have Jeff Grubb quit or something?

I do like the masteries and advanced classes though, opens up a lot for the next expansion (Cantha? would be nicce).

He left awhile ago, but not before having a lot to do with HoT so no you can't lay that on him leaving.

I think one of the biggest reasons why I continue to play gw2 almost everyday is partly due to the fact that I understand the game completely. Along with some of the friends I've made along the way.

Not to brag but, I've become really good at playing the game as well. I solo dungeons, solo fractals, solo champs and HOT champs HP's. I also spvp, raid, and wvw. I mix up my game play by doing it all. Keeps from getting bored. I'm even planning on solo speed running dungeons really soon and timing myself to see If I can get better times. I do it all to challenge myself because thats what I enjoy. The speed running community in gw2 has also been very helpful.

I just love the fact that the game is far more skill based then gear based. So I'm able to go crazy with the dodges, blocks, blinds, knockbacks, slows, etc to survive group content and deal damage.

IMO, FFXIV is in many ways worse.

Yes, it is a very polished product... but it's the most stilted PvE-centric MMORPG experience of the past decade. One of the most infuriating elements of Final Fantasy is what a one-track ride it is - how you are funneled into this terribly long (and, can I be honest?: BORING) epic quest, populated by hollow, and, in some cases, horribly empty or bizarrely narcissistic, haughty and offensive characters (Alphinaud, Minfilia [why are they heroes? What have they done to earn ANY respect from my character? It's that whole show and don't tell thing - I hear a lot about how great they are, but I'm left doing all the leg work for their dumbass plans]), and how you can't even bypass said chain on new characters created after the expansion launched.

I think FFXIV is a fine game... but GW2 at least gives you some choices on what to do.

When you understand the ins and outs of a game it really makes it hard to leave. I understand what you are saying completely. I have some friends that wont leave certain games because they just know how to play them so well and have made a reputation for themselves. Leaving a game to try others things is very hard.

The expansion content locked behind the original game was in fact my single biggest gripe since returning. Still, I think it's the best on the market. The biggest plus for me is the business model. I can play the game and not be reminded at every turn that I didn't spend 100 bucks today.

Much of this article resonates with me. I loved GW2 for about a year, but got disillusioned with so many of the broken promises, mystic toilet ect. However, I log in about once a month to dip my toe back in the water, but I'm yet to stay for a meaningful amount of time.

HOTS actually changes that aspect of the story because it was literally universally disliked.

Just a thought, and I read more then a few of his FR books and for some reason do a lot in the original game feel a lot like him (particularly around the asuras) but I don't have the same vibes in HoT. That doesn't mean he wrote less of the story perhaps but maybe he lost the inspiration or higher ups pointed him in a different direction.

Anyways, it is a loss that he quit. Heck, he is the guy who took Ed Greenwoods all loose sketches and turn it into the Forgotten realms campaign setting, one of the best and most versatile gameworlds ever. Someone like him is pretty hard to replace even though not everything he made is top quality.

They really changed it as soon as the personal story started. and yeah, it gets old even though it is far less annoying if you join the priory instead of one of the 2 others.

Rightly done doing all the work while some moronic noble steals the glory could be entertaining for a while but it is not something that should last so long and needs a far better ending.  Now I feel like Groo the wanderer whenever he have Arcadio around.

But the personal story should be taken for what it is, it would have been pretty bad for a singleplayer game and hopeless in a novel or book but MMOs always are far worse when telling stories (even though both GW2 and others have their good parts).

The 'Zergs' these days are a lot better than they were in the past. I agree that it's a little disappointing still, but nothing's perfect.

That' why I hate the F2P business model. GW2 buy 2 play model is pretty good and you can enjoy the game without pay walls.

For me currenty, FFXIV is my favorite game. I pay a monthly sub (very cheap with my Legacy status) and can enjoy an unrestricted game without paywalls and that is actively developed on With regular large content updates and another large expansion in the works.

If a game is good, fun to play and actively supported by the devs, I happily pay a monthly sub!
I still think that is the best business model for an MMORPG, when done right and maintained well by the devs.

Finally people starting to understand how bad this game is. Bad pve and worst pvp. Some of us quitted 2 month after realease, some took years to realize that. I never understand people who like casual games because that kind does not fit in a mmo world.
  • d_20d_20 Member RarePosts: 1,878
I liked it till HOT, but I just don't care for the new zones. I have tried to like them but exploration is more of a confusing chore and can be quite irritating.

They've returned the old WvW maps, and are planning to revamp a few things. You should check the WvW forums to see what they plan to change. But from what I've heard, WvW is back on track.

    This is not a game.

This article is completely wrong when it comes to the HoT zone "zergs". The maps actively discourage this by having people spread out and be organised else the entire meta event either fails or you'll get a smaller reward for participation. Dragon's Stand takes this to a whole new level where you have 2 hours to get the event organised and done. If you fail or it goes tits up at the blighting towers you'll get nothing but atleast there is Noxious Pods filled with loot scattered around the bases you've conquered even if you do fail.

I'm quite disappointing at the disinformation this article provides. Now let me get my tinfoil hat on but you also published an another article about a "content drought" on the 27th of July but the GW2 have been trickling in content in their patches for a few months now. Either this is a sloppy oversight or someone here doesn't like Guild Wars 2.

At $60 probably worth it for any f2p player, since you get that nice horse.
