Thats what people said about cell phones.
You mean that thing that is actually useful for communications, actually solved a problem, and doesn't actually make people vomit after 5 minutes of use?
VR is useful, and solves many problems.  All the better that it has potential entertainment applications.

'In other news, a survey taken in Finland indicates that Finnish speakers outnumber Portuguese speakers by 2:1'
What problem does VR solve exactly?
    Problems (plural).

Just to give you a brief example: my brother who is in medical school got to experience the Da Vinci machine during his surgery rotation that makes use of VR tech; it was initially developed for the military, but now allows a surgeon specialist to perform delicate surgery on a patient remotely, from across the country if necessary.

There are many others I can think of.
I would like to hear of the many others.  What you're describing isn't really a problem.... that's a convenience.  And sean said.. "The same problem that movies do"  Movies didn't fix a problem.

Problems are usually difficult or pressing matters that require a solution.  Movies are entertainment. Frivolous.
It's not a problem? OK, just remember that when you're dying of acute appendicitis on a remote tropical island somewhere.

I understand you will do everything to tear down this tech, and literally nothing will change your mind, but I never expected you to write off something that has literally saved lives as "convenience".

The following example isn't for you, but for any who might be reading: a middle school science teacher wants to explain the Juno mission, but wants to get across simply and elegantly the distances involved in space travel. Fortunately, his school has a VR lab, and he is able to work up a demonstration for his students to experience before they write their reports.

Just because something isn't a "problem" doesn't mean that the tech isn't useful.  COULD there be ways to solve problems with VR and AR tech?  Yes.. I'm not saying you're wrong,  but TODAY I don't know of any specific problems that have been fixed by either of them.

And I don't usually visit remote tropical islands, but I'd love to.

Understand, I'm not critical on the tech because I want it to fail.  I'm critical because I want it to evolve.  I like my Gear VR set, but mobility needs to be better, costs need to be reduced, restrictions need to be lifted.  The AR sets aim to fix this,  I just want VR to get more in line with that.

This entire side topic of 'useful' is silly.

    1. it started with the suggestion that the reason smart phones are popular is because they solve a problem.
         a. there are a lot of ridiculously successful industries that do not 'solve a problem' so its hardly a requirement for success so its a non-starter
        b. its extreemly likely that back in 2005 many here pew pewed smart phones too and are now doing a completel 180 and using it as an example of success. I would love to find some old posts from back then on smart phones it would be a good laugh I am sure

I am willing to bet a pay check (which is a large sum of money by the way) that the majority of people who decry VR also decried smart phones back in 2005.
I'm willing to bet you wouldn't cough up the money when proven incorrect. LOL.

Before this conversation devolves into semantics, VR is a concept, a legitimate one. The problem is the headset goggles (insert any brand) are not a viable, market ready solution to it. They're being boxed and sold off of hype, not because they're actually providing meaningful advances or solving age old problems with the tech.

This is not an instance of Xerox saying "who the hell would want a computer in their home". It's more like "This fat burning pill is a crock, AND it has unwanted side effects"

Anyone who wants to be taken advantage of and ride the hype train to a nice expensive new dust collector it's your prerogative. Please don't compare rehashed 1990s headsets to smartphones though.

I wouldn't call <100k in sales a success either. In fact, I would say that is a pretty bad failure, given how much has been invested into it to date.

That's not to say that VR as a whole is dead, but I think we can probably stick a fork in the current generation "Premium" editions.
    1. its risky to say 'tickets are not selling!, while people are literally in line waiting for the ticket booth to open'

    2. HTC is the most expensive option in the market place, according to logic of MMORPG forum posters just a few months ago people should not be buying these at all because of the cost
1.) Really - show me the line. I see a choked off supply chain that led to lack of momentum. Seems there are plenty of units to buy now - who's stilling buying now that the preorder rush is done? And hey, what about that preorder rush? Those numbers look ... bad.

2.) I wouldn't call 77k an exciting sales number. I'd say it looks like the logic of MMORPG forum posters proved to be pretty accurate.

    1. lol...seriously? I am still waiting for my pre-order to be filled which I put in a week after day 1. Its well known that they had a serious cluster fuck of a supply problem from the very start and they sold out of pre-orders faster than they excepted as well. Lines to buy what you can buy now are consistently being priced at $200 higher than retail price. there is absolutely a line and I am in it as we speak still not having an Oculus in my hand.

I'm not saying VR as a concept isn't useful. I'm speaking in terms of the revisited headsets as they pertain to video games and entertainment. They haven't solved their own shortcomings, or the shortcomings of the concept of headset gaming.

If I were interested in buying one I would prefer one that was a complete package over one that wasn't, so more Vive sales is a no brainer.  A friend of mine bought one which is now collecting dust after he played with it for a few hours after he first got it.

I think its very likely that Vive is the better option. However given OR ridiculous problems with supply I think its asinine to suggest the sales numbers are based on choice and that supply problems do not affect it as well.

    aka..its to early

Now I can buy an OR right now, its just that it will cost me more than a Vive and I with no hand controls other than a xbox controller

"Survey from Steam.  HTC Vive is a steam integrated VR hardware.  Curious what the Oculus store numbers are."

Given that Oculus is a locked platform, it'd read something like this:

    100% Oculus
    0% Vive

It is one of those ideas that some people accept will be eventually be successful the question is how long it take to convert and how other new technology will improve or circumvent VR tech. What I mean by this is making the tech smaller, reducing the problems, the cost, making it easy to use and integrating the technology into everyday life. Like any tech focused mainly on the consumer market untl the average consumer purchases and uses this product. Both VR and AR have lots of applications in the future, but hey MR might be the winner in the end who knows. It is espected that several of the technologies will be in use in the future the main debate is which would be the most popular in the general consumer market. Many signs are leaning toward AR and MR, but in the short term VR is all the rage and seen significant investments. AR is already part of our everyday lives, but many do not notice. Both will be here 30 years from now, AR may be integrated into our everyday lives, but VR will have sigificant changes to the way people learn and work.

First off. Irony. You randomly try to correlate headset goggle skepticism with smartphone skepticism then have the density to follow with a "what the f#ck does any of that have to do with cell phones"? I'm confused now. Are you saying that because you forgot you brought it up, or because you REALLY want to expound on the silly comparison?

The first smartphone was made for public consumption around 1993. VR head goggles for public consumption was around that time as well (if not before). A lot of gamers were kids back then, many weren't even born. Please explain what people decried smartphones, and how you're drawing parallels to the people who don't believe in headsets today?

maybe, just maybe, that is because no one is really buying them
maybe but some crazy part of me thinks as I sit here without a OR in my hand and without Oculus having sent me a shipping email and the fact that my credit card has not been charged  that THAT has more to do with it at this time.

I want to be clear because I know how MMORPG posters are, I am NOT I repeat NOT suggesting OR is the better option, that its my favorite, or that its even remotely a better choice in any respects in this observation I am making right now. Nor am I suggesting that VR is a success.

I AM however suggesting that the largest reason why the sales numbers of OR isnt high (AT THIS TIME) is because they cant ship dick.

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Total of 0.22% of Steam users have VR headset.

Making VR exclusive games is like making games exclusively in Norwegian (0.21% of Steam users).
While that sounds amusing, it isn't a valid comparison.  The market for VR is expected to grow rapidly over the next few years, unlike Norway.  The upcoming $400 Razer headset puts VR within reach for a lot more budgets.  That will likely result in attempts from others to compete at or below that price.  Without VR games ready for users to play, there wouldn't be any motivation to spend $200 on a VR headset.  Early VR game makers are taking a slight risk, but the experience they gain in making the games will pay off greatly when they are able to produce better VR games than those who wait until later to enter the VR game market.

the problem is peoples suggested benchmarks are often ridiculous to begin with. If any VR headset was anywhere near the number of Steam users or the number of people in the US by now it would likely be the most successful new product in human history. People need to find a benchmark that makes fucking sense

Condescension is endemic to your character. Yes, I understand that, hence the returned volley.

    Too subtle for you, noted.
