My point was I do not have to settle on inadequate tools for the job. I like a big screen, a powerful system, useful input devices...If you can find someone that prefers playing games on a smaller screen (where you might have to zoom in to be able to see what the hell is going on, using the wrong input device (such as trying to RP in an MMO on a touch phone) playing in a crowded place where you cannot get Dolby sound, where your connection is very slow, where you might have to use the phone for an actual call...sorry but I know no one that, given the choice between the 2 would want an inferior set-up.
...but it's not your fault. I can only assume it's your lack of experience.
I personally will often choose a mobile device over a PC for gaming, for reasons that have apparently gone completely over your head.
OK ok.
I have a lack of experience.
Things go over my head.
I am condescending.
Want to throw any other personal insults at me while you are at it?
Do you not understand, ANY activity I want to do I can do better at home on my PC. This includes things like Skype business calls which you would think a mobile device would be a better device for but if I want to conference in 5 people and do presentations....my mobile device is 2nd rate to my PC.
You are getting all bent out of shape and throwing around personal insults for something which is at best your own personal opinion and worse is dis-provable.
The only time my mobile device would be a better option would be if I was mobile and as I have stated, if I am mobile then gaming is the least important thing I am looking to do.
Being a gamer for 30 years and now someone who develops games now and mostly mobile, we have a major problem on our end as well...I will explain why... Games have ads and MT... People will NOT pay a dollor two for a game, for us to stay in business we have to live and pay our employees so we are forced to do ads, and MT.....That is the issue, 80% of the people playing mobile games want 100% free.... games....They do not want to pay a even a dollar for any game......
We have went rounds and rounds since we hate ads our selves, we hate Micro's as well...BUt like most company's we are at a loss....We actually thought about not making mobile games anymore.... and just move to console 100% since its to hard to make a living off mobile with out ads and Micro's ....
So you need to see both sides of the story as a gamer I have.... That is why I become a developer.. and went to school to get my degree I now been a developer for over a decade....Worked on large games and now small indie company's... Its tough... it really is.. We are the type to , to not even spam ads like most do, but we suffer because of it, so we are forced to use more Micro's because of it, we even use pay only versions that offer more, and we get great reviews, issue is selling for a dollar or two we need to sell millions of copy's which is rare on the App stores to sell... millions..... The games that do well, are the Free ones with Ads and Micro's...That is why people do it, and again we hate it, we been looking for another way...
I never play phone games, they're crap. For me gaming means staying in front of my cool PC and doing some nice raids and PvP with friends, or exploring a vast world with cool story like Witcher 3. Phone "games" are small, ugly, P2W, loss of time.
Being someone who is a gamer I perfer PC and console as well, but for most indies mobile is a way to get started or keep a small company going...... Most of us don't have millions like Blizzard but we have the experience but NOT the pocket book...So understand that....
Wow, dude. I have all of those things too, minus the powerful computer and great internet connection.
I love mobile games; I spend more time playing via mobile than I do on PC. I enjoy both.
edit: if you think mobile is for the "short attention span" only, tell me when you get to Trade license 4 in VendettaOnline. Better yet, let me know when you acquire one unit of Samoflange, or a Hive Queen Defense Matrix.
How about setting up a private server in Minecraft Realms so you can play online together with your son or daughter.
...prejudiced, much?
If you had a good computer and good internet you wouldn't be forced to defend mobile gaming. As I said, because I have the option, mobile gaming is not for me or anyone else who doesn't have to compromise.
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
Aside from graphics, there's not much out there for high-end PCs that I can't get in some other form for my middle of the road computer. Video game design really hasn't drastically advanced in the last decade or so; plenty of ideas have been recombined in interesting ways, and the way games are being judged has changed. However, the most complex game I've ever seen, Dwarf Fortress, runs fine on my 2008 desktop Mac. Massive Chalice is an excellent stand-in for X-Com (and more!). Fez, Botanicula, Proteus and the like provide engaging indie experiences.
Right now, a flagship mobile device costs ~40% what a high powered gaming rig does. Remind me, what are the mobile versus PC sales numbers?
It's simple for you to say I'm "forced" to defend mobile gaming, but mightn't the truth as easily be that your investment in your PC has caused you to be blinded to quality experiences on mobile that are worth your attention?
The one thing that might get me to upgrade my PC, when the time comes, is VR gaming. However, some mobile devices have VR solutions, also.
Pretty much tells me you don't care one bit if the game has any content or quality. You just settle for minimum effort mobile games. I have seen all the games you mentioned, the kids have played them and they are all simple games compared to what you get on a pc or console. Even the kids abandom them within a week.
Now there is nothing wrong with playing a mobile game during short breaks or when you don't have access to your other devices, but trying to defend weak mobile games as replacements console or pc content is ludicrous considering what is available on the mobile marketplace today.
I have yet to see one halfway decently designed UI for a touch screen either. I have reached the point if the game has microtransactions it is not worth bothering with. Yeah, some you can play and avoid such, but I find it frustrating that so much stuff is still behind the paywall.
I just got a 34 inch widescreen monitor on my PC, wow now that makes gaming fun! Mobile games lack good viewscreens, a good UI and have major data issues if you are not near wifi. The kids are always begging for more data.
My problem with mobile RPG's or just mobile games in general is the greed. The companies can develop relatively fun games, but overall you will almost (not always) never find a game that is not based on energy, or buy this to help you beat this level, or buy this loot box. Most of the games I have dumped time into I end up realizing after a while that it is incredibly pay to win, because in the beginning it doesn't feel like it. A good example is any of the hero collecting games like League of Angels, Puzzle and Dragons, or Marvel Champions. I have dumped quite a bit of time into all of those, and in the end all of them end up getting to the point where you cannot progress in the missions or in PvP without paying for random chances for a 6 star hero, which the only way to get 6 star heroes are through the gatchapon style system that requires cash, or you have to save every single in game credit they give you over the period of playing to roll a few times and hope it happens to drop one for you.
The games that do this are super well developed, and could have been amazing games if they just dropped the whole YOU MUST PAY TO ROLL FOR THIS LEVEL OF HERO, which is incredibly bad, and the fact that people are obviously paying for it is even worse. It encourages it.
There are plenty of games on the store you don't have to spend a dime on after the initial app purchase, but even some of those games are becoming pay to win after buying with in app purchases after the fact. If people think MMORPG's have some pay to win, they need to see how bad it can really get with the mobile games.
I'm hoping someone comes a long and develops a good way for people to have fun playing the game, and to monetize the game at the same time. Because if this keeps being the standard for all of the top games on the store, then it will ruin how developers think of gaming cash shops in general. Look at what happened to Konami, they realized that their mobile games were returning so much more money than the AAA games they were developing that they basically turned all focus to that (also pachinko, but that's a whole other story).
I simply cannot spend much time hunched over a tiny little square screen to play a game. I get frustrated at the small amount of real estate, the terrible UI's and the compromised controls.
This isn't due to any problems with eyesight as I have far more than average uncorrected eyesight with 20/10 vision. So good, in fact, that I was heavily encouraged to play baseball when I was younger, but I just couldn't stand the sport. It's also what makes racing and racing games so much fun for me.
If some of these games, like clash of clans, were also PC games, then I'd probably give them a try. My brothers all seem to love them.
If mobile games were any good, maybe i would play them, although even then, only maybe on a tablet, as i have a kindle fire, but they aren't, and they often have a cost to play ratio that is absolutely crazy. Mostly the games on Mobiles are aimed towards the very young, and have so many in app purchase 'land mines' that letting a child loose with one of those games without some pretty strong parental controls in place to prevent it, would be nothing short of insane. Personally i'll stick with PC games, the quality is better, the visuals are better, and i have a comfy chair to sit in that even has massage features, why would i ever inconvenience myself to such a degree playing a sub par game on a tiny device not really suited for playing such games on in the first place?
I know i should not stereotype the entire mobiel industry because i know of a few and likely are several more decently high end games on mobile, example soon to be FFXI remake.
However i can w/o any question what so ever make claim that 99% of mobile games are on that platform because they are CHEAP.Cheap budgets means cheap games, trying to cut the corners and cost of a big game production and no matter what you are ALWAYS 100% going to get a lesser product.
So why should anyone be supporting a lesser effort and a lesser product?I know the poster above was not happy with some claims of working or not and that some people might actually like the platform better but WHY?Sure you can like a platform but if the games are inferior rubbish again WHY buy games for that platform, simply use the platform for what it was intended,as a phone device.

Really? You've seen all the games I've mentioned?
How many dwarves do you begin with in Dwarf Fortress?
How many years does a Massive Chalice campaign run?
What type of creature do you control in Botanicula?
It's not that I think you can't just Google these answers; it's that you clearly didn't read my post. You must be the first person to describe Dwarf Fortress as "simple", which says a lot about your depth of judgement regarding the other titles as well.
Sure, some of these are not mobile titles; it's just funny that you are saying the games I mentioned are only worth about a week of entertainment, and you didn't take the time to read my post.

Not at all bent out of shape. Please don't assign feelings based on your perception of an internet post. I really couldn't care less what you think about the mobile gaming scene, just trying to point out where there may be some holes in your logic.
You came in with 'I have a job and don't have a short attention span so mobile games are not for me'.
If you got nothing else out of my posts, consider "you don't seem to be allowing for the possibility that different people have different preferences."
It's one thing to say what you like, it's quite another to imply that all mobile gamers are unemployed.

If all games exist on PC and you also have bought far more control forms than just a keyboard + mouse for the computer, then I think I would agree (of course except in the case where you are actually away from any computer).
However, that's not the world we live in. Among the most critically acclaimed games, far from everyone is available to PC in such manner. Of course, it may be a coincidence that in your case, you dislike all those critically acclaimed games that are not available in PC in such manner; that is though so unlikely that in such case one ought to ask oneself if it perhaps isn't some form of snobbism that is preventing oneself from enjoying other great games.

You just said high end.. as a developer we would never make any money if we aimed at just the high ends...You know how many complaints a day we get because of kids with low end devices and they are mad because there graphics suck and the blame us... When its there horrible device.. So it goes both ways as I said I been a gamer for over 30 years, and now a developer for over a decade...So I see both side..I personally prefer console and PC gamimg..That goes with out saying.. Mobile is there to pass time if your not home... I see many users wanting controller support so there is alot of people who game with mobile at home...Even though I develop for mobile, I do not game really at home with my mobile device... I love my PC and console to much.... But I do game well because I develop for mobile , but I do develop for console and have for PC many times...But as a dev who went from large company to a small company, its cheaper for us to go the mobile way.... Because we do not want to use place like Kickstarter, and use others money, we like to use our own... money... Because things do go wrong with development and people complain regardless... One main issue with mobile games is charging a buck or two, is not enough to stay in business as a mobile developer... You guys do not understand the cost of software to make a game..I personally have over 30-40k worth.... That is just for one person... When you hire others, it costed our company more.. per person.. I'm not complaining, i'm trying to share information why games are using ads, and Micro's....
I personally have been exploring a way to just charge a flat fee... and sell only basic stuff non pay to win stuff on a store... Issue is we would need to charge 8 - 10 bucks for the game ... and sell millions of downloads....Which is not common for games that have a flat fee.... Mobile games are also limited to poly count, which means less detail in models, we have a limit on kinds of shaders which makes games not look as good... This all matters...Then we have to think about people with low end devices... Making mobile games are harder than PC and for sure console and I have made them all.. When it comes to optimizing the game.. If you can make a proper mobile game, and I MEAN proper, alot of bad ones out there, I would say 85% are bad... to many people who are not experience at all.. ruin it ... in my opinion... So it makes it tough for legit experience developers for people to find our games since we do not have fat pockets like some companies...
Hey that's the best thing about your life. You can play games on whatever platform you prefer, because it's your life and you don't have to worry about what other ppls think. I play on pc, console, and mobile. I know pc and console are a lot more powerful than mobile... but some times you find a mobile rpg and get stuck for awhile playing it. Like right now I'm playing Phantom of the Kill. Nice SRPG I found last week in the play store. It's not about the graphics..It's about leveling up, getting exp, getting higher tier monster or heros for your party. There will be weeks I'm on the pc playing games or on my xbone. All I'm saying is some people play on mobile because they want to and it's not because of graphics and what not. Plus it's nice to play on your mobile when your stuck somewhere.. since you can't be at home on your pc or console. Always a plus!
Yep, same issue here... I keep thinking, 'oh, I should download a mobile RPG so I have something to kill time with while I'm out', but looking through the app store all I see is $20-30 (AUD) ports of games I have already played, or 'In-App Purchases'...
It's not that I think mobile games can't be good. Two recent portable games I'm playing are Fire Emblem Fates and Grand Kingdom, both of which (with some UI changes) I think would work well on mobile, but, as you said, are enough people going to pay $40+ for an 'App'?
PS. Even Pokemon GO would be tempting if it was a fully fledged Pokemon game instead of F2P grinder with a (currently) novel gimmick.
Well yes i understand the whole "if your not home" but i don't see that as the actual sell job.
I see tons of people wasting time just fiddling and staring at their cell phones needlessly, almost like an addiction.
I have also seen MOST gamer's now a days look pale and white, like they never leave the house for any extended period of time unless an emergency, point being ,do they really have time to game when finally out of the house?
Even still, why buy a top end phone and waste tons of money buying games all over again to play on an inferior platform?
Sure i have seen many low end games make good sales, but those games are not very good at all, just simple ones that tells me people are addicted and just spending money foolishly and endlessly on apps and games they really care little for.
Personally i do know exactly what type of game i want and specifics, example a FFXI redo and perhaps when Tanaka's mobile game is finally done i would consider those two,but i am not going out and getting a mobile device to play two games and i know i won't waste money buying tons of useless games to feel the need.

I have a job.
I have money.
I don't have a short attention span.
I have lots of free time to play games.
I have a powerful computer.
I have a great internet connection.
I enjoy RPG's.
Mobile games are not for people like me.
Not really harping against your preferences or opinion, but I am going to clarify one thing.
Vendetta Online on the mobile is a port of a PC title. It's design philosophy and a bulk of it's gameplay as a result predates most other mobile apps and mobile MMOs, and consequently also differs pretty distinctly in how it handles itself compared to the titles which have been developed specifically on the mobile platform.
Minecraft similarly is a PC title in it's origin that was later ported to mobile and carries a very different monetization model and design philosophy to many titles that exist in the mobile marketplace (more so than even Vendetta actually since it's an example of a buy to play app on the mobile market which has become very uncommon due to the "race to the bottom".
Guess the point here is, you're talking about a niche in the mobile market that has it's roots in the older PC design philosophy. Something that many publishers and dev studios that operate specifically on the mobile market don't share much in common with.

I have to agree with Grumpy on this. I love playing games on my 34" screen over mobile screen any day. 90% of all mobile games are cash grabs with nothing at all good about them. Hell some even play themselves and then ask do you want to spend money, even though you are not playing it. Mobile games are for traveling and quick games when you need to kill time. They are not for actual gamers that want to spend a hour or more playing something.

So it makes it tough for legit experience developers for people to find our games since we do not have fat pockets like some companies...
well said!
FFVII on mobile....only FFVIII is missing ...come on SE!
we need more ! , would love to see ninty puting zelda on mobile (OOT at least!)
