I think it was DAoC, but i didnt play it so much, i was like 13 or so i think, then i played Anarchy Online with my older brother but at this time it was too complicated for me .
The first MMORPGs i really played for a long time (on and off) were World of Warcraft and Guild Wars 1.
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Ulitma Online in 1998. I was 13 at the time over at a friends a house. He had been telling me about this awesome game he had been playing for a month or so. Anyways, he introduced me to what would become a life long habit.
I remember the first time I played I made a thief character and was running around stealing from Wondering Healers in Moonglow. After an hour or so I was finally tracked down and killed by another player. It was so much different from anything else I had ever played at the time. Needless to say from that day on I was hooked. I actually played UO for almost 10 years and still log on every once and a while just to see what's happening.
To this day I don't know if I should be happy that I went over to his house that day or angry. Seems over the years I have wasted a lot time playing games. Sometimes I feel like I could have been doing something much more productive. lol
UO is what got me started, and even today I still have all the original boxes and the awesome cloth maps for every Ultima game. Sadly, I'm not on the fence for Shards, it's just not the same =(
Trolling, being trolled, getting banned, yelling at mods, getting perma banned, making new accounts, and still trolling this site since 2004 =D

Everquest was first. First I spent the most time playing SWG. First open world PvP I spent the most time playing was L2. It's all a blur after that til present day.

But would say UO to answer simply
Yeah I played NWN on AOL as well. Paid by the hour. Yet I consider Lineage to be my first proper MMORPG like you do UO. Crazy what we paid during those days isn't it?
That is my point. NWN and the shadow of yserbius were pay by the hour and might have been called mmorpgs if the term had been around. Certainly we could all them mmos as they are called around these parts right now.

So what game did you first play that got you into the genre? Mine was Lineage then Asheron's Call I still think, even with all the games released since, that they are still two of the best MMOs ever made.
Lineage as well, back during the US beta for it, and for some time after it. Followed by UO.

Sometimes those fast zombies can be a real bother. Give me a slow twitch zombie anyday. :-)

Neocron, then anarchy online. i remember sitting there in the pitch black night, waiting for the sun to rise so me and my friend could see each other for the first time :pleased:

The simplest answer is usually the right one.
Well if I had said tsoy people would have said that is a graphical mud and not an mmo. When it predates the term it is a problem. Considering what is getting called an mmo these days I think it is fair game. You don't like it, so what.
also, thought the answer could be handled by a simple person. You proved me wrong.

Which came first the mmorpg or the coined term mmorpg? It was simple marketing to coin the term. The technology of the mmorpg was inevitable.
