UPDATE:
Apparently this can occur if you hit the : key, in fact it's happening to me right now. I was able to fix it on my last thread by toggling the HTML mode on and off while it was active, but now it's not working anymore. So I'm at a loss.
I'm trying to write up a thread on the General Discussions board, but every time I type something, I get this weird drop down menu showing up:
I notice, though, that it's not showing up on this post.
What is this and how do I make it go away?
Thanks.

For reference, I'm using Google Chrome and running Win10 64bit.
EDIT: just replicated it on the main post while updating it and this time, toggling HTML didn't fix it.
The old DOS instincts rarely fail.
EDIT 3: If there's an incomplete emote anywhere in the text before your cursor it will happen every time you press a key. So if there's : mark, or for example :awesom
EDIT 4: Except if there's : mark followed by something that couldn't be completed as an emote before the incomplete emote, like :RandomText. That will prevent it happening, but only if it's before the incomplete emote.
This seems to be a separate bug. Something that couldn't be completed as an emote, like :RandomText will prevent the emote menu from appearing later on post even when it should appear.
Workarounds are just that, workarounds. I know you are being helpful but that isn't a fix. It is a bad design.

Hopefully it will no longer be a feature in the new forums. The dropdown menu in the comments header is perfectly adequate, the buggy and irritating context menu is not needed.
Having it interrupt you while typing is annoying and bad design.
