Picture a fraternity with a playroom and countless people playing one character 24/7 so they can dominate the loot/server....Then that char gives the frat bros the spoils of top dawg....I've seen this scenario a few times....Insert Chinese cash for gold sweat shop and boom....Get the picture. I'm talking other games of course. You cant trade in between non family chars in BDO so that pretty much quashes this but other games, yeah buddy. Forget trying to keep up. Your trying to keep up with a room full of Korean ten year olds playing in shifts.
Coming into BDO late may not be a bad thing because every time they add major content they add new weapons and armor so the gear grind starts all over if you want to keep up with the changes so really I dont see any disadvantage too starting late.
BUT,,,,, There are some things that are making it hard for me to enjoy this game the way that I would like too.
I hate to say this but the community is toxic, and the way the game is set up help to support the toxic atmosphere. I hate the fact that every time I go to do a daily or some grinding I have to look over my shoulder all the time because of the butt holes that like to PK peeps when your in a mid of a fight with a group of mobs. Or to get PK and then told these are my mobs so get the "F" out!!!
The last time I checked their names were not on the mobs and I paid for the game just like they did! I have the right to farm the same mobs! Some peeps say well what do you expect from a PVP game!! Well I say that PVP is just one part of this game and just because you can flag a kill whom ever you want anytime you want does not give anyone the right to limit MY enjoyment of a game I paid for! One thing that really pisses me off is the attitude that THESE ARE MY MODS!!! NO THE F THERE NOT I have just as much right to farm them just as you do and why do I have to change mobs or channels because of some butt hole! But that is what it has come too. And with the way the gearing is set up it does not matter how good you are... if that PK'er has 25 more gear points then you your dead, and most of the time they always seem to hit you when you in a fight with mobs already so yeah thats a really a lot of fun.... NOT...
For me this is almost a deal brake and Im getting to the point where I just may leave BDO because of the toxic community that this game model is supporting.
Then there is the gear RnG...... It's nuts the millions of silver you have to spend to just try to get your main hand weapon to +15 is nuts..... and now with the reforming you can end up with a lower grade weapon the what you started with.... only just to have to spend millions to get back to where you started.... That just is not fun game play..... its like cleaning a toilet.... you don't want to do it but you have to..... yeah not much fun....

The botting and hacking were why I left BDO. The problem with the experience in this game is that it was impossible for me to go grind on some monsters and not constantly feel frustrated by the hackers running in and basically one-shotting me so that their guild-mates (who I took out 1 vs 3, mind you) can continue to farm there. What ever happened to fair play? I mean, hell... didn't I earn a right to farm there by taking on 3 vs 1? Couldn't they bring in more people, then I do the same? God no! That'd be fluid, fun-filled, intended world-pvp, wouldn't it? Forget that! /s
Anyway, I loved this game. I really thought it was my new home. Hackers ruined it initially, then daum continued the process but not actually taking care of the problem. Removing hackers from the game is great and all that, but what does it say about the fight against hacking when still, months later, there are people claiming to and being observed hacking? It says that fight is at the very least an uphill battle that is slow-going.
That said, I do have a solution: Put more GMs in place. If I could get a response in-game as soon as I report a hacker and have them banned in a reasonable time-frame, I'd come back and play this game until the servers go down. But god forbid they'd spend money on staff instead of making more revenue. They're choosing. I did too. I left.
If you are playing this game just to have fun, more power to you. If you do it for the end game I really have to wonder. Personally I don't see any end game at all. I find the pvp ridiculous, and from what I have read the sieges won't be much better.
So play this game to just have fun and just ignore the rest. Maybe someday they will actually add an end game.

I just got my first toon to 50 the other day, I've been playing since just before the servers opened for everyone. I'm in no hurry, and never in a hurry. The reason I like MMOs is because they remind me of my days in pen and paper D and D in the late 70s. I never understood the race to max level, and then bitch about nothin left to do. My opinion, but if folks don't like the in-game stores that they feel are money grabbing, then support these MMOs going back to monthly 15 bucks. Cost me 20 bucks for a movie and a coke the other day, for 2 hrs of entertainment. MMOs give you at 27/7 entertainment,less than a movie. The community changes when you have to pay to play also. that's just my opinion, and you know just like as@#$holes we all have them.

The problem with the game is not the game or the company running the game. It's the people that play the game, everything in the game is based on people choices. If you want the game to be a huge time sink then its going to be one it's your choice. I play about 2 hours a day in the game if that but on the days my guild have node wars I play a lot longer because it's really fun. I do let my character stay logged in for auto perks, auto fishing, training, and my workers. Now all my gear is pri but my boots are duo. Why because I'm just enjoying the game not play 5+ hours of grinding, that's a quick way to burn yourself out really fast. Probably 90% of the people that quit the game already went that route the rush way got to have everything now route. This route was a very bad choice to make, because over time the things you wasted 5+ hours on going to be available a lot easier like example on July 20. Daum bring out the black market merchants where now you can have a chance at getting hard and sharp stones, boss gear and the jewelry accessories, easy mode instead of wasting 5+ hours grinding or 500+ energy gathering. So the game can be for casual players if they choose to go that route or it can be a time sink which is the rush route, but over time those people will just weed themselves out.

It's not really that hard to avoid the bad eggs. They are, most of the time, either easy to spot or overshadowed by another player who genuinely wants to help that basically says, "don't listen to the trolls, you can do it this way..."
Ever since City of Heroes was murdered by its company, I've been sort of waiting for the next evolution in MMORPGs. CoH didn't have anything special except its fantastic character creator and of course super-powered heroes versus villains rather than the typical D&D fantasy world. This drew (at first) a lot of imaginative players who put a little something extra in their play, but as time went on more and more players seemed to just want to run through the missions as fast as possible, "farm" missions over and over, etc.
The thing is, Role Playing is something a relatively few people like to do -- garnering names such as "nerds" and "geeks." These people have often also been interested in computers, and so some of the earliest computer games were fantasy adventure games (e.g. Zork -- look up, younglings). The MMO factor offered much more fun. There were 2 problems: 1) the limitations of computers, 2) the conflicting need(s) of software companies (profit and all it takes to get it). Computers are much less limited now, and new programming techniques have been developed, etc. However, the previous limitations and the ongoing profit motive have locked most games into the pre-set mold, much as the movie studies keep cranking out sequels and re-makes: stick with the profitable formula. There are probably vast numbers of people who consider themselves computer RPGers who really have no concept or feel for what it's like to role-play. Even some of the games I've checked out that claim to be "sandboxes" and "open-ended" have been quite disappointing.
I think those who are looking for something with depth and creativity, where imagination counts for more than resource management or fast-twitch reflexes, where bots would just be lost or barely useful assistants, will have to depend on independent developers, even individuals and teams working just for the fun of it, maybe with a sacrifice in things like fancy graphics, or maybe the technology and software will advance to the point where it doesn't take a huge team of experts to produce good quality in every aspect.

I don't think it's that they have given up, it's that they're trying to cater also to the crowd that prefers shooters and MOBAs which are all the rage these days.

I do not believe devs were sitting around the room inventing this idea of character level boosts. It is a response from players making level differences an issue. So devs are sitting in the room talking about what to do with this 'issue'.
DOAC had a /level at some point but I really can't remember when it came it. I believe there are games that had something like that before but can't recall specifics. Might have been a mud but more likely a PC in the era of doomclones... I am excluding cheats that people used for games from that.
