Just read up on CU. I must be missing something. It sounds like a Darkfall without the full loot or PvE or Mob loot or risk vs reward. I couldn't determine if the game will have free aim combat or not from the info I read. I like that they are talking about tactics in combat though. I suppose it sounds like it could be a good side game once the initial entertainment of the PvP wears off.
So make up your mind. You say they didnt do anything for 8 months then in the next paragraph you say they were doing stuff before kickstarter even ended. Are you the Derek Smart of Camelot Unchained? lol
My post was made because I think we should just count the Kickstarter end time as production start time,
Eh..? Start of some preliminary production? Yes; full blown production? NO; they need the kickstarter funds before they hire people, not after they hire them. Hiring takes time, starting up a whole company, building an engine etc.. does as well. How could they have all of that in place before actually having the funds? Or right as they get them (end of KS)?

I put like $120 on this and I am fine with the wait. If they start trying to sell me things that don't exist yet for hundreds of dollars each week, like Star Citizen, then I will get mad about it.

It's more like DAOC or WAR RvR without the PvE and with all gear and buildings made by crafters.
Combat is mostly Tab target rather than manual aiming although many spells and arrows are physical objects that appear in the world and have to travel to the target but can collide with other objects (character, spells, trees, rocks, walls, etc.) or be avoided by movement.
I'm not sure at this point how well the game will support being played as a side game. With a large map, long travel times, and high TTK, it may not be that great for very casual play.
Given the development cycle of MMO's I'd say they're probably half way. I wouldn't expect to see a release before 2018. Beta tests are another matter, but an actual release, 2018, maybe Q4 2017.
Actually the alpha testers play it regularly, and beta is supposedly "soon" but my guess is late 2017/early 2018 for first launch.
Play what? What is there to play? Last time I logged in, it was a bunch of bots running around in a field with extremely bare bones combat.
Just going from what a friend told me who logs in regularly, said its come a long way from what you described.
Sounds like you are an early alpha tester too, so you have access to the same news and info I do which clearly communicates their progress so why ask here? For the drama?
Wow- coming from someone who actually got a tremendous amount of game time in for vanilla DAoC, I can't believe the creator is doing a kickstarter. Only in my dreams! Take your time Mark! I'll be waiting!

This week in MMO crowdfunding news, Camelot Unchained
released its latest newsletter (at just under 8000 words, if you were
curious – it’s tradition now to always count). The team recaps the
addition of four new programmers, plans for its satellite studio in
Seattle, and progress on the ability system refactoring and reward tier
gifting system. There’s a farewell from former community manager,
Jenesee Grey, as well as a look at at combat system, art team, engine
threading, and lore. CSE also promises to begin full state-of-the-game
letters from Mark Jacobs beginning in July.
Sorry, but you should educate yourself about the length of MMO development cycles. So far, CU is in full production for roughly 2.5 years. If they manage to hit beta "this summer", it will actually be the example of rather quick development, not to mention making their own engine which can add year(s) to standard cycle.
Speaking of launch, mid-to-late 2017 would be my guess.
Depends totally on the game's scope. This game is NOT and never will be a complete game,it is a budget game that has to go with primarily pvp because it can't offer anything else with it's team and budget.
I would lump this game right alongside Crowfall, neither game will be a complete rpg experience. If this is what you are looking for, enjoy but if you are looking for a triple A mmorpg,,forget it.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Don't get me wrong, guys. I want this game to release very badly. I'm just impatient for a new, quality MMO to play, I guess. And I'm afraid it might not be this game, soon, or maybe ever. Lord knows it doesn't look like I'll be getting my money's worth from SotA...Albion Online might be fun filler in the mean time.
Normally I would agree with you, but this is Mark Jacobs were talking about. He does have a ton of cred since the early 80's. I think he will pull it off.
He is an MMO legend so that should be taken into account.

I think the first ones that should educate themselves about the length of MMO development cycles are MMO developers. All the expectations of quick releases come from developers that show their product earlier and earlier and speak of dates long before they have any idea how long its going to take.
The positive thing I can say of MJ is that he owned the issue, he came out early and said that his original release estimates had gone out the window and gave some needed realism on how long it would take.
I agree with your launch guess, hope we get beta this year.
Developers yes agree. People agree also.
And (abridged version of what I just posted on SC forum) you cannot compare a KS development with a "big company" development. When UbiSoft or EA or Activision announce that they are going to develop a game they will already have all their ducks in a row; probably assessed and rejected multiple potential games before costing and internally OKing the funding. They will probably even have the team assembled as well.
With a KS project you see the "bare bones" right at the start because they have to put something out there to raise money. Then they have to wait for the pledges and then they have to go out and hire the right people - which also costs money.
And this pretty much guarantees that KS games will take longer than what might have come to be seen as the norm. And the money is the big brake. If something falls behind a big company might decide to allocate some extra staff or OK some overtime. Not really an option for a KS project.
And MJ will be walking a fine line; if he says the game won't be out until <pick a distant date> new funding could dry up. If he says to early a date and misses it again people will start to question what is going on. He has a reputation for telling it as it is though so as long as he carries on communicating things should be OK .... eventually.

When Camelot Unchained will launch, I'm convinced that it's going to be a complete game. CSE, from what I've seen, has a lot of perfectionist developers and I'm sure they will launch CU only once they consider it's ready (100% complete). If by incomplete you were referring to the decision to develop a game that is more of a sandbox than a theme park, then I disagree with your claim: MMORPGs can be "complete" without heavy PvE features (quests, repetitive mob grinding, boss raids, etc.).

Seeing how the campaign to make the game started only about 3 years ago in 2013, I would say they have about another 1 or 2 years left in a normal development cycle. Hell some games took 7 plus years to make.

Great post and well thought out. Good Job
The problem is: developers also like to eat and sleep with a roof over their heads.
Aiming for 100% absolutely the right way to go. Sometimes however reality bites and and e.g. Mythic decided it had to sell itself (to EA). A lot of people were unhappy with MJ for that but - as he said at the time - it was that or lay-off a lot of staff which he wasn't prepared to do.
Really looking forward to the CSE Twitch (citystategames) stream and Q&A within a few hours, unless I'm mistaken. Perhaps some light on how the ability system has evolved?
They could just toss a few nickles at Broadsword Games and buy Dark Age of Camelot. All they'd have to do to have a winning title is use the UNREAL engine and predate the game to before Trials of Atlantis. But meh - what do I know?

I hope they do what it takes. It needs to be good. They also need to release before they run out of money.
I am older with a full time job and kids. I want something good.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
That's just, like, my opinion, man.
