I think its statistically impossible for that to have happened randomly within the first week. some planning some where must have happen.
Yep, there was an exploit involved. I calculated that you have a 30 times greater chance of winning the lottery than meeting someone in this game. That is assuming that one million players average exploring 1000 planets.
And meeting someone they knew? While their is a chance, it is so small that you are much better off playing the lottery with the megaplier. Then you could buy the game and make it multiplayer!
right AND happening within the first week...yeah no way

From what I read, two players were streaming on Twitch. One player came across a planet that was named by the other. He reached out to that person and then they coordinated the experiments. I also read a comment that while they were on the same planet, they were at different "time periods" in the game, whatever that means....
Edit: Found Sean's tweet about it. Some of the comments are entertaining
The chances of a person playing the game and streaming and finding a planet that another player who also streams named is stastically less likely then us interacting with aliens as common place.
either everyone is being spawned near the same location or some bamboozling is going on. its a bit surprising to me how much as been written and said about this game with a clear misunderstanding of exactly how big we are talking about
Your statistics are only as good as the developers data. In their data input I believe there is room for error which players can exploit. I think I decently understand the numbers and the universe and its scale, I just believe there might be a doorway developers either over looked or forgot to close or accidentally made. I don't think it's on purpose because it's created so much rage. If they met and talked and it was fine I'd think it was possible a publicity thing. I don't disagree with you. My initial thought was that the game has an issue with it's initial spawn algorithm so that it's not leveraging the full scale of the available planets. Of course the more nefarious explanation is that the two streamers colluded and took advantage of some client side exploit to control spawn.

I would call it more an unintended feature I mean spawning is working, but instead of taking advantage of the pool of 18 quint planets, it's only spawning players in a pool of thousands. (I mean the odds otherwise would be ridiculous). It's probably more likely that there's an exploit or there really isn't 18 quint planets in the game....

wouldnt the suggestion that its an 'error in math' really as much theorycrafting as 'was pre-planned'? regardless I have no problem adding that to the list.
All I am trying to say is that under normal circumstances for that to happen is about as close to imposssible as it can be.
two people who know each other and both of which stream made a connection within the first week randomly? no fucking way in hell unless something is broken or everyone is spawning in the same area by design

The game looks visually appealing, but it doesn't look like it's for me. It's a survival game, but you'll mostly be playing solo and against A.I.
If players were more concentrated together, then the dynamics of the survival aspect would be a lot more interesting. There also needs to be a guild system, and we'll end up seeing territorial control on some planets. An organic community would form. As it is now though, it's unlikely happen.

as a side note I hear 'visually appealing' from a lot of people but to me it looks horrible. I find the art very distracting and immersion killing and even from a stand point of art I find it rather annoying.

I played on the PS4 last night for about 4 hrs. Their certainly were more than a few "Wow cool" moments for me. The fact I am visiting places in the game that no other player has been before is very cool. This is a game you have to really experience for your self, watching a stream does not give you the same feeling of discovery and awe. This is a very personal and solo journey which is fine with me, some games are meant to be enjoyed in solitude and this is one of them.
Best Game Moments.
The very first time you lift off with your ship and fly around a planet.
Being able to name a system after my wife.
Getting attacked by a lone beast and almost dying.
Going where no man has gone before, very cool.

just to be clear I experience 'places no other player has been to before' pretty very often and its been that way for about 2 years for me. I agree its a neat experience but as i say, already been doing it for 2 years before this game was out. So its not something I consider amazing anymore or reason to buy a game.

18 Quintilian planets. That is 18,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets. Lets say a million players explore 1000 planets on average (honestly, that is probably very optimistic; at 3 planets a day it would take a year to get to a thousand, and while I think this game will do well, I doubt it will retain one million players for a year that are willing to explore 3 planets daily). That is one billion planets explored, which is 1,000,000,000. so if you divide planets explored by total planets you get... a 1 in 18,000,000,000 chance of meeting another player. That is one in 18 BILLION. The odds of hitting Mega Millions (I checked) are 1 in 176,000,000. One in 176 million. That means you have a 102 times better chance of winning the lottery (I was working with 5 quintillion planets when I did my original math) than meeting another player in the game.
If you DO meet another player in the game DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT, EVER BUY ANOTHER LOTTERY TICKET. Your luck is all used up.
The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!

yeah there is a lot about this game that has come up in the past month or so that just smells like scam.
another case in point is how does a developer not know someone is on their server a week before the game is out and then simply turn off the server access? something about that whole pre-released game just smells like scam somewhere I just dont know where or why.

I feel like the lack of evolution is a missed opportunity. The planets seemed to exist but not evolve in any way. I can visit places and alter rocks which stay that way forever but beyond that and naming things repercussions of my actions are stagnant. Its also kind of odd that, in many cases, 90% of a planet is left unexplored because its so similar all over. I'd rather less planets with more biomes and diversity. These things are pretty nit picky. Just a couple of things I thought of since writing this.
As for the aesthetics, I think it has a very Nintendo 64 charm. It calls back to a past time for me. I like that but can see how people don't like so much stylization. If you do like it I recommend checking out Chris Foss & John Harris. They are the two main influences on the art. Foss's work in particular seems to have affected the color palette.
I am struggling with the Nintendo 64 part. I didnt have that console so I dont know what games you migth be refering to but I am curious

I love that they gave us a game that has already generated so much discussion and theory.

I'm saying you seem to be basing your data off of what we have been told by developers. How do we know they didn't get it wrong and/or miss something like a glitch? If they are wrong about something, like a number they gave us, then it would skew crunching of said numbers. Now, based on the numbers we have been told yes I completely agree no 2 people should ever meet. It was projected like it was a random meeting but I'd like to know exactly how it all went down.
in other words I should add 'it was a bug' to my list of possibles.
agreed

I look at this game, and I will definitely be buying it, but not until the price drops. I have analyzed this game quite a bit, and I can confidently state that after the first two weeks (gotta enjoy the new car smell!), I will be playing this game for about 5-6 hours a week. With that level of playtime, it is really hard to justify $60. I will wait until the price drops below $40, which will put the game in the proper threshold for how I will play it.
It blows my mind how a measly $20 makes all the difference to some people. there HAS to be a MUCH larger group of destitute gamers out there than I thought...

You're missing a bit of crucial information in this math: we know that a player reached the center of the galaxy in 30 hours on a leaked copy. Unless something drastic has changed, it stands to reason that two players with an open channel of communication should have a good probability of being able to reach each other within a day provided that each is able to accurately locate him/herself within the galaxy. This is true even if the spawns are totally random.
If players are not able to accurately locate themselves within a galaxy, that conjecture goes out the window.
Also, I find this a bit disappointing:
4. WILL I MEET OTHER PLAYERS?
The answer to this question is similar to the one above. Yes, you may meet other players on your No Man's Sky journey, but then again, you may not. It totally depends on what you do.
But what is interesting is that even if you do bump into another player, you might not even notice.
Unlike other multiplayer games, ships belonging to real-world players won't be tagged with their name or any other indicator – a bit like Journey.
However, developer Hello Games has revealed that other players will look different from anything else in the game – especially if you spot them walking on a planet.
"You effectively see their suit, actually," said Murray. "So you won't know what's inside. It still won't answer for people whether you are an alien or whether you are a human or what you look like."

names a planet then calls his streamer buddy to 'find it' and gives him the location with plans to both be online when it happens.
Why would Sean say what he said however is explainable really in all cases
Actually, that's what was originally said in the discussion....Streamer A saw a named planet done by Streamer B and contacted Streamer B to come meet him on said planet. Vice versa doesn't matter....in a realm of 18 quint planets, how does one realistically go about "finding" 1 planet out of so many? And if I understand correctly, it takes a ton of time to travel one galaxy, much less 1 planet out of 18 quint. I'm not clear on how the NMS universe is organized (multiple galaxies?), but both players would have to had spawned relatively close to each other, which I think we all agree is statistically improbable unless their is an issue with their spawn code, an exploit, or the NMS universe isn't as big in reality as claimed.
Before you go any further I want you to know I have not played No Man’s Sky. What I have done is viewed more streams of other people playing it than I care to remember. Like many of you I’m trying to figure out exactly what it is and if that appeals to me enough to warrant a purchase!
Apparently two people did meet up but couldn't see one another, maybe due to some instancing or something. That was fast. Gamers gonna gamer and other than the writers, most of us are pretty smart
