MMO where you gain levels by PvP

jimMMOjimMMO Member UncommonPosts: 19

Hi,

I really like PvP in MMOs but I don't like leveling in PvE or doing quests.

Is there a MMO with a healthy population where you can gain levels or make progression by doing PvP?

I really like Planetside 2. You gain levels and unlock weapons by killing other players. But I am looking for something new.

The idea of EVE Online is cool too. You don't have to do quests or grind since you unlock skills simply by letting the time pass.

Recommend all the MMOs!

WOW, GW2, ESO, Rift  all have the ability to level up while doing pvp.
Are you onto something or just on something?

Just to expand on that: GW2 and ESO have a kind of massive persistent pvp area with hundreds of players fighting over keeps etc that you can level up in- but the leveling is kind of slow.

WoW and Rift have "battlegrounds", which are small scale pvp maps with an objective like capture the flag or capture the point which you can level up through (fairly quickly last time I played).

GW2 also has a type of "battleground" style pvp (they call it spvp), but everyone gets a max level character and access to all the max level gear (so it is relatively balanced). However, you get rewards like gold, levelups (that can be applied to any character on your account), and gear through playing that.

I found all of these games except for gw2 spvp you have to do quite a bit of pve if you want to be able to compete because you can't feasibly get all of the best gear through pvp activities alone (the new WoW expansion might be different idk).

While that's still true for the very best gear in ESO, they have taken some steps to address that by providing various gear sets that you get in PVP only as either "rewards for the worthy" every time you gain a few hundred alliance points as well as buy from special PVP vendors using either gold or APs as the currency. The gear is comparable to many crafted sets and is quite a step up from the useless junk you used to get there.

You can see those sets at ESO Academy. Just go down the page to "dropped sets," sort by "how to get" and you'll see all the PVP sets.
