I find these categories very confusing in mobile gaming.
You can have a role-playing game, a strategy game, an adventure game or a simulation game, all sharing nearly identical gameplay. Wonder how to interpret the graph with that in mind.
I'm also curious whether certain categories are driven by only a few titles. For example, I know CSR Racing is a huge earner as a racing game. If it represents majority of the racing category, does it mean people enjoy racing, or that CSR Racing is simply really well put together?

the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you
playing an MMORPG?"
waynejr2 Games do seem to be a bit watered down nowadays. We'll have to wait for the newer generation to get bigger companies and scale up production for the new ideas... I just don't see much risk taking by established companies...
As a company you have to also factor in development costs. It's a lot more difficult to create an RPG than Solitaire. You can realistically create 5 popcap type games to every RPG. RPGs also tend to need more post release support.
There are no "Good" RPGs on mobile.............And most that they list as RPG on mobile arent RPGs at all
Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 EE Chrono Trigger Phantasy Star II FF VI FF VII Bastion Oceanhorn
Stars Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Chaos Rings Dungeon of the Endless Loot and Legends Legend of Grimrock Shadowrun: Dragonfall The Banner Saga
Plus more and more and more
Mobile gaming is not what it once was
I think he may be more referring to actual RPGs developed for mobile devices. Nearly that entire list you gave is nothing but ports of RPGs which were developed for other systems and re-released. There are very slim pickings though when it comes to new RPGs for mobile.Having a profitable mobile version of a game that was already profitable when it was released on consoles years ago isnt exactly a surprise.
There are several mobile-only RPG's I've had a good deal of fun with as well. I've put a good number of hours into Battleheart, as well as Infinity Blade
Sure, mobile has it's limitations. But so did the 8-bit consoles, the hand-held consoles, the limited-space cartridge ROMs, the 4-direction D-pad... etc. And somehow all of those were used to great effect at one time or another.
The platform isn't the real limitation - it's the developer's imagination and skill.

ALL terrible watered down versions that dont do justice to there original .................shameful money grabs .. All of them
Are you being serious? Have you played The Banner Saga on Tablet? it is awesome. I actually prefer it over the PC version None of those games are watered down. None of them. They are the full games. Playing Icewind Dale EE on my Tablet is awesome and far more intuitive than the clunky interface I played with on PC when it was released. Chaos Rings is a great game and mobile only. The Sorcery Trilogy is great! You obviously never played these games on a tablet. KTOR is the full game. Nothing removed. So are the rest of them. I have them and have played the originals and the mobile versions. Wisdom is gained through experience. Not conjecture.
Have tried a couple on my sons tablet , and found all the originals Better , Dont agree Blue ..... My experience for each one i tryed was dissapointing and couldnt delte it off the tablet fast enough ...
Matter a fact the 2 RPGs i found that were decnet tablet games were also better ported to PC .. in 9th dawn and The Quest ... HAte tablets
All the categories fall under Farming , as they are Farming the CC of the unwary and foolish
Now that's just silly. Many games on mobile use the exact same monetization scheme as other platforms. Buy to play, or a modest subscription. Nothing more. Quite frankly, in my experience I've seen far more predatory practices on PC (preordering, crowdfunding projects which sink, pay to win, ad nauseam).

First, I've never seen any decent RPGs on a mobile device - sure, there are ports of old games, but they run on tablets and not really on phones - plus I'd have thought most RPGs would be B2P.
Games like Angry Birds or Candy Crush just have such a large userbase that I'd have thought they'd rake in tons more than RPGs.
Having said that, my knowledge of mobile platforms is limited. I use a windows phone which basically has nothing available for it in the app store (games wise) and I also, as a rule, hate mobile phones and the negative effect they've had on society. The games I have tried, including ports of old games, have all sucked as the screen size and controls just suck balls and lessen the experience. I stick to solitaire, hearts and a few puzzle-type games and only ever play when I'm having a smoke by myself.

Read the same article on Gamasutra with Surveymonkey's Mike Saunders saying the following "Strategy and Role Playing games like Clash of Clans, Mobile Strike, and Game of War drive the highest ARPDAU in the mobile game industry by a wide margin,"
To noone's surprise we have another company that don't understand genres.

agreed with the OP. I dont find it surprising within the mobile market. but what I do find surprising is the popularity of mobile gaming in general. To me its a non-starter, I need immersion or I am not playing. But that is just me
