Really is a shame the movie was sabotaged by American critics, they movie could have easily done 100m if it weren't for a mixture of terrible marketing and the bad publicity from obviously bias critics.
Sabotaged by critics? Hmm..i rather think the movie got what it deserved.
It also could have easily done 100m if it just was a better movie -or a better Warcraft movie for that matter. Instead
they tried to cope with modern action cinema and thought putting on a
Warcraft label would do the job, 6 years after the hype subsided. Maybe that was part of the usual Blizzard arrogance, thinking that every crap sells on it's own if there is just Blizzard or Warcraft on the label. It worked for them with some expansions.
This movie is coming from a studio that lost 10mio+ subs over quality issues with their Warcraft product and over several expansions had no idea wtf do to about it -who would expect a good Warcraft movie from them? Add to that the hollywood factor and you better keep your expectations so low that you drag them behind you over the floor when you enter the cinema.
What i saw was a CGI based action movie with bad casting, uninspired/blunt acting, cheesy cliché dialoges that told a mainstream-formula "good vs. bad guys" story. I still liked the movie, but i also spend years in this game and i like all these b-level budget fantasy
movies that have their own charme with homemade CGI, horrible fight
choreography and bad actors with green paint in the face posing as orks.
Rude awakening for Blizzard. They probably thought this thing was "too big too fail" and missed that the kids and youth of today did come of age with mobile games, MOBAs and don't live in the WoW era anymore.
Time moves quick in the entertainment industry -especially if you run a IP that is supposed to keep people entertained and you don't care to maintain it for 12 month.
If you think the movie deserved 0/5 type scores then you're just hating for the sake of hating. The movie wasn't great but it was decent. It by no means deserved most of the scores it was given by early American critics.
When will they learn. Game > movie adaptations always fail.
One of best movies I have been watching. Stll ... numbers are out and I'm sorry for that. Was hoping for another movie.
Personally have been 4 times in cinema in few weeks, something that had not happened since Conan I guess .... at least 10-15 persons I know have been, all very satisfied.
I'm a fan of Warcraft lore. This film was garbage and ruined/changed everything good about the story. Especially Khadgar and Medivh's story. Read The Last Guardian instead of seeing the film.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

The problem was they tried to put too much into the story with too many characters. So you have a lot of short introductions, some plot, and barely any character development.
No matter how good of a plot, there has to be character development.
Write bad things that are done to you in sand, but write the good things that happen to you on a piece of marble
Because it isn't really meant to be watched by the WoW crowd, but by the Warcraft crowd. You know, people who used to play Warcraft back in the day? Some even played Orcs and Humans to which this is a direct adaptation. WoW movie would be nigh impossible to make because it's about the journey, not the destination, result etc. And online friendships etc.
With that said, shame about Warcraft movie. I knew it'd tank and tank hard, but it was a very enjoyable movie to watch. I love seeing books, games etc getting the right treatment...and WC did receive the right treatment. It's just that...it's fantasy. It's still considered a "nerd" thing to be into(unless LoTR or SW for some reason). Pointless people who won't try new things...meh their loss, not mine .
I hope there'll be WC II movie. It'd be much more interesting than this one if for nothing else, but then because the Dark Saga is more interesting than Orcs and Humans.
Problem is, if you're a fan of the original games and Warcraft as a whole then there's an immediate disconnect from the changes that are scattered through the plot.
For one rather large thing there's no Ner'zhul in the cinematic verse. They cut him out of the equation and that has a lot of meaning for what a Warcraft sequel will cover. The Lich King for example was predicated on the existence of Ner'zhul and what happened him to later interact with Arthas. Similarly, they dropped the appearance of any interactions with demons like Mannoroth who was supposed to have given his blood to the clan leaders (save for the Frostwolf clan) in order to taint them, and Gul'dan lead after the first conflict and fall of Ner'zhul.
With the amount of revision that's being done to the lore, I can;t really say who the movie was actually aimed at, since it alters what the people that have invested into the entire game series and beyond have become familiar with, and others won't really have a frame of reference for much of what's going on save for some of the time cavern events.
The disconnect is you are wrong. This is the first war. Ner'zhul is the second invasion/war.
Timeline is 1st orc war king assassinated (movie) Stormwind sacked Blackrock defeat and Stormwind reclaimed 2nd war with Ner'zhul
They'll release blue ray that has a key that gives you a random item. Suddenly they'll have their WoW players buying a handful of the blue rays(maybe even Overwatch/Heros of the storm/Whatever).
Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent.

Then the world will be taken over by aliens with mind control.

No worries, Blizzard will surely find a way to get their money and boost their numbers in one or another way.
Like releasing a $50.99 special edition bluray that includes an ingame pet and raises money for charity -which would be 99cent per sale.
The Blizzard-sheeples will be buying that and cheer on Blizzard for giving away "their" money and being so generous.
The title is kind of humorous. As the movie did not lose big bucks, it did not make up it's cost in release, but they will sell lots of dvd's and digital downloads and actually make money on this movie. That is where the big money is today, NOT the movie theaters.
Go look on Amazon and Netflix at all the movies there that never saw a theater screen if you want proof.

You sound just like the people who claimed it would make its money at the box office. And it didn't and probably won't do anything when the DVD comes out either.

I think Ozmodan is half right. Going off what film sites suggest it probably hasn't yet turned a profit but its not a big bucks loss.
However I agree with @filmoret that it probably won't do much when it comes to blu-ray and DVD sales. Four reasons. First outside of China the film failed; this will put stores off stocking it. Second: lots and lots of other big budget dvd and blu-ray releases - just as it was when it hit the big screen. Third: streaming. Fourth: lower cost of dvds and blu-rays due to streaming.
(Remember that the film company will only get a small $$$s of each copy sold not the full price - why the lower price suggested price has an impact.)
It will sell some copies though obviously and I would expect it to be available on Netflix, Amazon - whatever. And maybe on some local channels as well at some point. However the $$$ that it will command will be impacted by it not doing very well - outside of China. And because - as before - it will be up against lots of other big budget films all looking for a piece of the same action.
I think we can assume that it will make a profit down the line though. (Discounting whatever it cost Activision Blizzard to promote the film with their give aways.) The investors will have expected more though.
My personal perspective... I played the Warcraft games and WOW vanilla/TBC... and I think Duncan Jones has made some interesting films (Moon/ Source Code)... my interest in seeing this film is literally 0.

Incorrect, Ner'zhul was the first unifier and leader of the horde before they ever set foot on Azeroth. He also was the leader of said horde prior to them receiving the blood of Mannoroth.
His student, Gul'dan (who took over as the leader of the Horde in the absence of his presence in the cinematic universe) usurped him after this to lead the subsequent crusades in Azeroth until his defeat. It's during this period that the horde consumed the blood, but the demons were supposed to have already been present and openly assisting the horde by the time Gul'dan came to power.
There was no "2nd war with Ner'zhul" because by the time he regained control of the horde he'd already been setup by Kil'jaeden and ripped apart to be turned into the Lich King.
The disconnect is very much there in the lore, please don't "correct" with misinformation.

I never saw the movie actually working out well, couldn't get interested. There's some games around with unique ideas and vibes that would end on much better movies.

You really don't grasp the fantasy loving people out there. The movie will do great in a streaming/dvd release. If you saw all the crap fantasy that is sold on the internet via streaming or dvd, you would be shocked. At least this movie was not that bad. Like I said before, the real money is not in the theaters any more.
Yeah, how can anyone judge a movie before digital sales come in? Most people have moved on from theaters thanks to technology. Newest trends point to watching online over television, and buying DVD/Blue-Rays over movie theaters. This seems so unfair to judge Warcraft this way ><.

I still haven't seen it even though there were a few years when I played it.
