Personally I would prefer a proper starfleet command online. Multiple factions, component targeting, convoy raids and defences, maybe even territory control(if done right or at least balanced out with npcs for the less popular faction).
Can we get Earth and Beyond 2? How about EnB just come back with a new engine? Please?
EA has this game safely locked away collecting dust. They would never let someone buy it for fear that it would make money. They won't even talk about it. Its like it never happened.
After I have seen what they did with Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic IP I wouldn't want them to do any version of Earth and Beyond ever. EA would ruin it IMO.
As for a new STO I wouldn't trust Cryptic or PWI to have anything to do with either. They had their shot and we see how they did things. I would only look forward to a new STO if it was done by Team totally removed from all influences or control by Cryptic or PWI or any of their associate Corps.
(I am one of those who will not play any games/entertainment products by Cryptic or PWI simply because of how they have managed STO up to this point)
Startrek was and is nice.. the Singleplayer is great.. the Multiplayer though.. well - sucks often To me it was much better than SWtoR, but when they brought these imbalanced Dreadnaught ships, well that was the beginning of the end.. RIP until a real successor is made, that can transfer the good singleplayer into multiplayer gaming, too
Since those companies are Shareholders they do it until the last penny is pressed out - so STO2 will take time...ZZzzzZZZZzzz
I'd welcome a STO2 if Cryptic had nothing to do with it, and players could express themselves freely. If I can rise to fleet admiral, then I'd welcome some admiral-ish stuff to do.
I like STO. The space combat is fun, and the stories are actually pretty good. Only reason I don't play it is because PWE and their crap business model can kiss my ass. Well, that and the lackluster ground combat.
AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!
We are born of the blood. Made men by the blood. Undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open. FEAR THE OLD BLOOD.
My complaints are centered around the progression or lack thereof in this game and how everything that's worth anything requires real money to acquire because really who in real life has 10 hours a day to spend gathering materials to sell for currency in their auction house or spend hundreds of dollars on a pachinko chance of getting something worth it from boxes?
If we had a title made with honest quality that would be shocking to me, what I'd love to see is them eliminating the ignorant JJ Abrams nonsense from the Star Trek universe and make it fun for the masses. Right now it's Scroll Bars Online.
I don't disagree with the OP that STO got a great many things wrong, but I disagree that another Star Trek MMO would be the answer. There's simply too much to compromise for an MMO to give us the Star Trek experience we would want. I would much rather see a good single player RPG set in the Star Trek universe. Note I said good, not the mediocre stuff we've had in the past. I particularly like the idea of starting out at the academy and progressing through the ranks aboard various starships as the game chronicles your career in Star Fleet. Multi-player done right (maybe as a separate module?) could add for some very good fleet battle scenarios as well. I very much enjoyed space combat in STO. It just didn't feel tactical like Star Trek should, but rather too action based, but MAN could my Heavy Escort with dual plasma cannons rip through some Klingons. Who knows? Maybe someone will pick up the idea as a kickstarter one of these days.
STO has gotten so much wrong, I think it can't be fixed at this point. So I say start all over for scratch, and do a NEW STO2. One that we the fans can put our stamp of approval on. And no not have limits to it due to fan boys not being happy. Any new Star Trek Online type game, MUST be a Star Trek Experience. One where you feel like your playing an episode of a show your staring in.
So wouldn't that be catering to "fan boys"? I mean, you make this demand that it must be x but that is something that a true "Star Trek fan" would want?
One that we the fans can put our stamp of approval on. And no not have limits to it due to fan boys not being happy.
That just contradicts itself.
Besides, no company would touch it as they wouldn't want to make a game where mostly "fans" have their stamp of approval as they wouldn't make enough money.
Additionally, what is a true Star Trek experience? Voyager? Original Series (which is what I consider a true star trek experience) Next generation or some other show? The new movies, old movies?
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
It was the stories that made ST great and to make an MMO that captured that would take more than 100 million. Sadly, the days of big budget games based on big IP's are behind us. Is it time, YES! Will we see it anytime soon, NOPE...
P.S. if by some miracle someone does make STO-2, please for the love of all that is holy, make it not involve PWI or Cryptic.

And honestly, because ST is a series (both TV and movies) that has always focused on a group of people on the different ships and stations, it'd likely work better as a just a co-op multiplayer game than an MMO.
Like, make it a decent third person shooter style game or something, and give an editing tool for map and "episode" building that players can share out and host themselves similar to the first Bioware NWN title.

No way, Cryptic have gotten their chance with the IP. A Star trek MMO should be made for trekkies and be about playing with your friends on a single ship.
The most important thing about a MMO is to now your fanbase (like Blizzard did with Wow).
Cryptic would succeed better with another Forgotten realms MMO instead, they are way harder to botch up.
They did this (friends on a LAN playing together on the same bridge) 20-some odd years ago with Independence War. It sucked. The guy stuck with engineering was not having any fun at all - he was working his ****s off and getting yelled at by EVERYONE. The captain only needed to interact once every couple of minutes. The only guy having fun was the tactical guy, the one pulling the trigger. Independence War was a lot more fun to play solo, since a lot of stuff became automated.
It looks like the way to go, but it would take a brilliant change in the way systems interact for this to be fun for everyone.
I think Cryptic did a really good job with this game, considering all of the constraints the IP holders put on them (I was an early beta tester in this game). A lot of the things that we suggested were poopoo'd by the desires of the IP rights holders, and honestly, a lot of things that were suggested were tried and were no fun at all.
The game sliding to PWE did not help, since it took several steps towards going P2W since the acquisition, but don't blame the guys that made the game; they did the best they could with what they had.
A side note; PvP was sorely lacking, and has not been fixed, since back then a PvP build sucked at PvE and vice versa. Now that you can make all of your gear MkXIV legendary, the gap between the two is not so wide, but still PvP is the same as all games; the person who gets the first shot in usually wins. This gives a huge advantage to those with battle cloaks. Ergo, it is tough to find UFP forces (by far the largest ones in the game, but a force not having a cloaking device) in PvP zones.
The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!
It is time for a STO 2 point 0 but more interaction with the bridge crew when in battle not necessarily maybe while in travel yes but not in battle it's best to have third person view of your ship in battle imo.
I'd love for someone other than Cryptic to work on the next STO because they seriously have issues with development in this title.
Every DLC is yet another reputation and a single questline with basic events that while voiced and well written are very minimal. We need much much more.
In a post I wrote in STOs suggestions as well as this forum, I outlined how they could improve the online life of federation officers with examples on how other scifi mmos designed their exploration process.
For Romulans and Klingons it would be a bit different yes.
Klingons could harass manufacturing or drilling colonies while Romulans could enter espionage events to stop the advancement of the Tal Shiar.
These events could be written and then implemented using their randomization code which works they just never turned it on full power.

Yep. I remember these exact same conversations back when the game was being developed. It's hard enough herding cats, I mean, players together for the occasional raid or mythic plus dungeon and getting them all on the same page. Now imagine an entire game built around that concept. The only guy having fun would be the one at weapons stations and maybe the captain giving the orders. And that's all after the time it took to gather the players in the first place just to play the game. It wouldn't have worked. Cryptic did the best they possibly could with the limited time they were given. The rush release is what hurt this game. Had a few more years been given, you would have had a complete two faction game from the start, better ground stability and good base game to build on.
