I have to say that I am more bothered by the sexualized child-like races than I am by skimpy armor in general. One I find creepy and the other is just unrealistic (but as @SaunZ said above.. it's magical! )
But also as @laserit said, when they go too hog-wild with this as was the case with Scarlet Blade, I'm immediately suspicious that they're just trying to sell titillation because maybe they've got nothing else to sell.

I was looking for a new free MMO, which most are based out in Asia. I wanted an action combat one with some focus on PVE, since I already play WoW for a "normal" combat MMO. I couldn't find too many european/US based action MMOs that are free. But I did find TERA, Black Desert Online (buy to play), and some other free MMOs. But nearly all of them looked incredibly skimpy, where the armor barely covered them up.
TERA looked the worst for this, it has a little kid race and it looks as revealing as when I go to the beach and see all the skimpy bathing clothes. That is why I don't go to the beach in California, because I don't want to see little kids wearing that junk. In my view, they should be covered up. Same with in games. But in TERA, I can play a male and have normal armor. But I still have to see all the females and the kid race wearing armor I don't want to look at or want in my house.
BDO didn't seem as bad, but the female armor still was vastly skimpier looking than the male counterparts.
of course, there is Everquest 2 and FFXIV which has normal armor, but that wasn't the type of MMOs I'm trying to find.
Why do so many MMOs (and even singleplayer games often run into this) have barely any armor coverage on females, but on males they are completely normal and look vastly more realistic? I don't agree with the SJW on many things, but I do agree that there seems to be some agenda of having females looking incredibly skimpy and the males not.
To be honest, I'd be completely fine with it, if the males had skimpy armor too. But they never do for some reason?
And of course, WoW definitely has the same issue, but it also has a lot of normal armors for females to choose from. So that is okay. And you can make male characters have skimpy armor too. But WoW seems to be only MMO to allow skimpy females AND males, OR normal armor coverage for both.
Not sure what the deal is, but looking at these MMOs made it seem like I was looking for softcore porn. That is NOT what I want in my house at all. Again, I'd be okay with it (like in WoW) if males could be skimpy, but there is a huge issue when its only females in a vast majority of MMOs.
What is everyones thoughts on this?
Play some FFXI The men wear bondage gear. :P
The main issue is in eastern culture women's bodies are a major selling point. So of course game developers there are going to exploit that fact. As stated earlier in this thread sex sells.
I have to admit, personally I like bulkier but fantasy wise they all got their own styles. So long as you got options I think its fine, fantasy after all leaves room for silly things to happen. With my female toons sometimes I prefer the fully armored look (usually) other times I want silly/sexy outfits. Same really goes with my male characters (truthfully prefer the skimpier on the male just since it often comes off more humorous 'macho man' style).
I'd not trade the subligar in FF11/FF14 for anything else since to me its just funny on both male and female characters.

Actually, that is true everywhere in the world. Not just men prefer female bodies, women like to look at it at the same time. Generally humans find the female form much more visually appealing, its why you see even on magazines dedicated to women they tend to put a beautiful women on the cover. Not to say the male form doesn't get some of its own admiration at times, though he female body is a more universally visually appealing preference between the genders.
The chain bikini is the height of fantasy catwalk fashion. Worn by babes since time immemorial. Don't think your dedication to fashion is not appreciated be it in sandy wastes, freezing tundra or the darkest dampest dungeon.
I don't get it? In a Fantasy RPG world, why can't skimpy armor protect me? I mean, the armor has magical traits and attributes doesn't it?
Sz
Nobody ever calls in to question the fanny pack that can carry 14 swords and a half a dozen shields, or a ring that somehow makes you harder to see, a hairpin that lets you shoot an arrow better. Shove some pixel rump on the screen and suddenly it's an issue.

Yeah but sometimes the magical part of the armor doesn't work

Arthurian fantasy and skimpy female clothing have gone hand in hand long before MMOs existed.
It's fantasy and I think comprises more of what people like than what they dislike. I'd be interested to see how many woman it bothers compared to men. I've always wondered how a woman can be seen as less powerful the sexier she is imagined. You'd think that with less armor she would be considered MORE powerful. Truth is woman can be both.
I sort of agree.
"Fantasy" art has had scantily clad people since the 40's. Heck, this is 1956:
As far as the earlier comment about how "scant" armor can't protect, that's taking it too literally. It's not about the armor being "real armor" it's about "the look".
edit: Here's a link for 1935 covers of weird tales. Loads of scantily clad images.
Usually the super skimpy goes with Anime like peanut butter and jelly. Sadly, I like peanut butter and jelly, but not Anime. It just looks toooooooo....mmmmmmmm. Don't know. Just too!
I have this theory that in the video game universe, there's a material that is strong, lightweight, and has most of the properties you'd want in a good armor. It happens to be transparent, and is commonly used in female armor, which is why they look so skimpy. It's expensive in some places, so it sometimes tends to be used more on higher level armors that can justify the cost. But it greatly irritates the skin of men (but not women!), so men's armors rarely use it.

Don't forget the reason you see some chainmail rather that a 100% transparent is....modesty.

You didn't know that women have a higher metabolic rate than men so have to wear skimpy outfits? You can use that one any game, any time.

For some reason I remember an old Sluggy freelance where the guys are trying to explain why the girls suits are invisible while the power up but not the guys...
Honestly, it is fine if a game have skimpy armors but they should have the alternative for both sexes (maybe not looking the same though) and there should be some more sensible alternatives. You should decide how your toon look (but the really cool stuff should still be hard to get).
Also, heavy armors should look heavy, a plate bikini is clearly still a light armor. It doesn't have to cover the entire body but it should still look like a plate.
So I was playing WoW again to try out Legion. I never got to 110, so decided to level. And off a boss mob for demon hunters, maybe other leather wearers...there is literally an armor piece called "Skimpy demon armor" or something to that affect, but definitely had the word skimpy in it. So it was blatantly obvious that the armor was going to be completely unrealistic.
I've been playing GW2, and while there are some clothing that makes your character "skimpy", most of the armor and clothing I have found is realistic and covers the whole body.
