I grew up on Nintendo. The NES was my first console. I got it in 1989. Some of my greatest gaming memories are from the SNES. But, I think it's time for Nintendo to go the Sega route. The Wii U was a failure. Only the diehard nintendo fans will disagree. NX is probably their last chance to get a piece of the gaming market. I'm very skeptical it will do that. If they were smart, they would get an exclusive deal with Sony for console releases and stick to handhelds. This is just my opinion.
lol, who the hell is Bethesda to make demands on anything? You got modders doing a better job at putting Skyrim up to date with a ton of new stuff to do then Bethesda ever could. They got so full of themselves after the AMAZING success of Skyrim that they release a mediocre title called TESO, right when Skyrim was at it's prime. Nintendo should just flip the bird at Bethesda, they're a joke.
If they could make the NX as powerful as the xbone or ps4 then we could see a much higher resolution mario or zelda or similar title they have on wii u or wii . I could see lot's of children and adults happy about this plus they could get way better games that they have currently. Even some from Bethesda and other big publishers.
Every dev's wish for this thrust me, they always say it for any console that comes out, that they hope they can make even better games but there limitation is the console itself. So it would be a very smart move for Nintendo to do so at this point specially with MS saying not long ago: "https://www.engadget.com/2016/08/17/microsoft-aaron-greenberg-qa-project-scorpio-vr/"
That the next console they get on the market next year could be the last one at this point. other link to more articles can be found by searching in google with terms like : " Microsoft say's last console to come out ".
Their strength is definitely in their IPs. They consistently create fun, light hearted, unique games that somehow manage to please both children and adults. My favourite console of all time remain the N64. I actually also think the Wii U is an alright console. It's cheaper than xbone / ps4 (or, was anyway), still has some decent games on it, the controller is quite a novel feature and just makes all UIs much more intuitive.
The only problems I can see is that Nintendo messed up the name and the marketing.
It shouldn't have had "Wii" in the name. The hardware itself is vastly different, as is the intended audience, so they shouldn't have confused everyone. If they had been more clear about audience, they'd have sold more units which would have kept more developers on board. In the UK, all WiiU products got removed from supermarkets ages ago which dramatically reduced sales. Last Saturday, for example, I decided I wanted to buy Xenoblade Chronicles X for my WiiU. Literally couldn't find it anywhere in town. It seemed to be a popular game at launch (which was recent). However, all major chains in town have stopped stocking WiiU stuff except 1, which didn't have it in stock. Even the second hand store (which has 1000s of games) only had 1 shelf for WiiU games.
I'm hoping the NX will be better, for Nintendo's sake rather than my own. I'll be getting Zelda on the Wii U (its why i bought it in the first place) so probably wont get the NX myself, but I want Nintendo to remain in the gaming world for decades to come.

A PS or an Xbox ain't gonna happen.
Kid friendly is a good reputation to have and one that I believe can be a saving grace.
