As far as I know a smartphone can almost do the same with wireless bluetooth controller and wireless direct on your TV. Of course the device may be more powerful and make you play games that are not available on smartphones.
I love Nintendo, but this is way too much. This is a product for a society where videogaming is infused in almost every activity. It might be that way in Japan...or somewhat close to, but I simply don't see people suddenly starting to game every-friggin-where they go. More and more people are gaming, that's for sure, but there is a much more defined distinction between when people are participating in videogaming and when they are not.
I've brought my console to a houseparty and it became part of the fun. But if I brought my console to a rooftop party, like the one in the video, it would be very, very awkward! In one of the selling point og Switch Nintendo is even taking on Apple and its app-store filled with VERY affordable (and yes, often very crappy) games, and I just don't see it happening. AAA gaming takes concentration and a somewhat commitment to time, where casual gaming is hit-n-run, especially because of the lack of depth and storytelling.
This isn't innovation. This is the same as everyone else with a gimmick tagged on. And that gimmick is already a product that has been on the shelves for years.
See Nintendo! Now you've gone and made me sad *pouts*
OK I'm intrigued! But the one of the things I actually found kind of sad is all these people in the commercial in beautiful locations staring at a tiny screen.
I thought it was really sad at the start goes outside with the dog and instead of taking a walk or playing with the dog, he stares at his nintendo, lol.

I think when it comes to this trailer specifically (how Nintendo is marketing the Switch) i agree with you. Outside of this trailer, i look at it from a more realistic way than the trailer is showing. I would use this Nintendo as a home console and when i want to play from my bed, or my backyard, or anywhere at home outside of my room(or living room for people who set their consoles there) then i take the portable part of the Switch.
I don't play on the streets, not even on a phone, but i can totally see the Switch being very useful, just like 3DS and Vita are for me. I can play games without having to sit in front of the TV/monitor.
The trailer shows a gimmick. In a real life situation i don't see it as a gimmick, unlike vr...
I cant really put my finger on it but that Trailer really put a Sour note in my mouth
Not sure why but it looks Horrible to me
Sad Days =( Sad Days as I'm a huge Nintendo fan
I own a Wii U and have a tough time with the fact that it's considered a failed console. It's a significant improvement over the Wii. It can play all the Wii titles, upscaling them to 1080p, has user profiles, and the virtual console games include features that were missing in the Wii VC, like the rumble pack, and you have the option to play DS games in the virtual console using the gamepad and TV. And there are good games for the Wii U. I think it's easily the most underrated console of the current console generation.
I personally think the vita is more underrated but i totally agree with you on the wiiu. I dont even have a year with mine and i love it.
Part of me really loves this, but as buscaa said, it's all about the games. One of Nintendo's problems, ever since the N64, has been creating consoles that it's difficult or impossible to put the latest games for other systems on, which means they tend to end up with weak third party support, and all the good games are made by Nintendo itself. I'm guessing this will end up in more or less the same boat, since the specs will probably have to be lower than the other major systems. Seeing Skyrim on it is cool, but Skyrim's almost seven years old. The choice to show it in the trailer was obviously a very strategic one. It's something that still causes people to say, "Whoa, cool, Skyrim!" but doesn't require up-to-date hardware to run.
All of that said, I love the design of this thing. I agree about all the separate little pieces potentially being easy to damage or lose, but I think that's a minor quibble. I've waited for ages to see a major console that properly marries portability with home TV gaming, and now that Nintendo's the one doing it, maybe we'll finally get one.
From the list shown, there are a number of noteable standouts that have released highly popular games in the past. There's not really much of a reason to think that they aren't going to do the same for the Switch. It'll be interesting to see how many games wind up being Switch exclusive.

I see your point, and I would probably have some similar kind of use for the portable part. My problem is that is would be a very small part of my usage of the device, especially as I find console games to be VERY expensive, and when I buy one, I want to experience it in all its glory on a sizable HD TV and with good sound.
The thought of experiencing a boss encounter, in a Zelda game, on a 10 inch screen instead of on the 40+ inch screen it is primarily developed for, would make me feel like I missed a part of the experience.
Now doing some MMO grind work on a smaller screen at a time I normally wouldn't be able to, is much more up my alley!
The fact that Splatoon and Mario Kart were shown in the trailer is a major boost to potential sales. Even though the new Zelda game is being released on the Wii U, they totally pulled a Twilight Princess and delayed the game to make Zelda part of the list of launch titles for the new console. Previously, Twilight Princess was delayed on the GameCube to release on the Wii as a launch title. Which will also boost sales of the Switch.
The biggest mistake Nintendo has potentially made here, is missing the Christmas window and not launching until March 2017. Right in time for Spring Break in the US though.

Hopefully the Switch will have 1080p when connected as a home console on a big TV for the full console experience like the competitors do. It would be a shame if it isnt that way.
What would be great is if that media slot could play 3DS games that don't require dual screen support. Look at that huge back catalogue of ready to play games.
I was trying to size it up in the little flashes where they showed the slot to see if it was a 3DS sized slot. I'd do split screen on the TV for that back catalog.
If it doesn't play 3DS games then they missed big time.
I'm of this train of thought, unfortunately it looks like Nintendo is going to leave 3DS and Wii U backwards compatibility and ideas in the dust with this sytem from what this trailer implies, no touchscreen demonstration, no dual tv gameplay shown.
Unless they still have a rabbit to pull out of their hat like the ability to pair Wii U Gamepads and 3DS systems (which would be epic) with the system then this seems like a whole new ballgame i'm not interested in.
I don't want to leave dual tv play or touchscreen play behind and unless integration with previous systems is somehow incorporated you can count me out.
Yeah. Unfortunately my son in over 30, my daughter is 18 and busy at UVic and my granddaughter is barely a month old... no way to hide that I'd get this totally just for me

And Ninty is going to love selling all the replacement screens, stepped-on/lost controler-side-units (whatever they end up calling them), and the rest.
Honestly I doubt it'd last a week with my three teenage nephews.
Unless there's a lot more to it than has been revealed so far, I just don't see how this is going very far. Even in Japan. When last I was there (a bit over a year ago) what I saw mostly was people (as in pretty much everyone, regardless of age, sex, or apparent social class) glued to their phones or tablets -- makes walking around, especially in closed spaces like Malls and such, a real pain in the arse. Saw a few kids with 3DSes, a surprising number of PSPs (!), but mostly everyone had two devices -- an (mostly oversized) flip phone (I thought they were weird cameras at first, didn't realize they were phones until an elderly Japanese woman explained it to me) and a phone (mostly iPhones) or tablet (mostly Samsung, for whatever reason, but iPads commonly too) for gaming/web surfing/whatever.
I dunno, I don't get how going from "shitty version of a PC", the accusation leveled (somewhat unfairly, unless you just want to pointlessly label every console there's ever been that way) at PS4/Xbox One, to "shitty version of a tablet" is anything but a step back.
Hell, you can get an Nvidia Shield today, if that's your thing, even emulate all the old (And soon to be re-re-re-re-re-released on the Ninty store, rebuy so you can play it on your switch!) Zelda or Mario game you care to name. And for all the claims this will be a gazillion times faster and will be supported by every third party game party under the sun, well when haven't we heard that song and dance? There hasn't yet been a Tegra that lived up to Nvidia's claims, and at this point you'd be foolish to believe promises of third party support until and unless they actually materialize.
Ok, Ill admit it, I was kinda disappointed at first but its growing on me. I felt an inkling of hype just now watching the trailer again. Freakin masters at marketing! Not sure id go too high on price though, $300 max..... with controller, and thats probably after it gets a healthy list of interesting upcoming games. Hell it may go as low as $250 or $200. Thats what I paid for the Shield like 2 years ago and lets be honest, the Switch is essentially a Shield Tablet modded with side controllers, and an hdmi/power dock.
They say anything about motion controls with the controller pieces?
It seems a bit gimmicky to me. I just wished they developed a full fledged power games console which was attracted to third party developers.
Which is exactly what they have done with the Nintendo Switch!
It's brandnew custom Tegra based on the new Pascal architecture.
Seeing in the trailer how Skyrim heavily upscaled on TV when the handheld was docked, it looks like the dock might house a second Tegra processor enabling SLI and boosting GPU Power.
This console will definitely be more powerful than the PS4 and XBone and if the dock is indeed using SLI, it might even surpass the upcoming PS4 Pro.
Seeing the partner list, all major game Development houses and Publishers are on board.
I hope you're right bud. It's about time we had a Nintendo alternative to Sony and Microsoft.
NVidia has a lot at stake here, since the Shield flopped and didn't sell.
There is a lot riding on their partnership with Nintendo. So the new Switch console is going to be their showcase they can make Tegra work like they invisioned. Being scalable and offering desktop like performance.
Seeing how beefy the docking system is, it would be safe to assume there is a second Tegra SoC in there to provide the upscaling to TV.
By earlier reports about the Tegra X2 and it offering up to 1,5 TFLOPS, we can assume the handheld will offer this kind of performance and when docked, the second Tegra kicking in, it being able to push up to 2,5 - 3 TFLOPS.
This would put the Switch, when docked, somewhere between PS4 and PS4 Pro power wise.
It all depends on the price deal between Nintendo and Nvidia, if they manage to use up to two X2 based SoC's per console or if they have to settle for less.
Time will tell.
I guess I'm one of those people who are pathetic enough to want to bring this to parties and sport events.... I normally just play mobile at such events, now I can play great games instead. I'm happy, can't wait to purchase this!
Focusing on a portable console is a risky strategy. Portability isn't really a high priority for the majority of gamers worldwide, so they have to hope that existing handheld users will want to upgrade to this, or that they can create a new market.
I personally think that they should have:
Created a console that can run normal ps4 / xbox games
Focused on creating a great exclusive library of Nintendo games
Focused on local multiplayer
Nintendo's strength has always been their games, but with the massive libraries available on other consoles and PC, you do need a console that is easy to port games to. If the switch could run CoDs, battlefields, Forza's etc as well as having Nintendo exclusives like Zelda, Mario etc then it would become a very serious contender for the majority of gamers.
If they also pushed local multiplayer titles, it would help sell to casuals who loved the Wii. There is a real gap in the market for local multiplayer titles, a gap that Nintendo have traditionally been great at filling.
Maybe the Switch can do all that, who knows, but this initial marketing seems focused on a very small subset of gamers. The Wii U is a good console, but it tanked due to terrible marketing. I don't want to see the Switch do the same.

Well, my predictions about Tendo's next big console release were totally off. I figured they'd double down on the supposed VR craze and come up with the next Wii style controller and maybe a second generation'ish headset.
But a portable console? I mean they're reaching back to the gameboy vault for this one.
