I liked the game. A good (although a little on the safe side) story and fun combat. I bought the digital edition at release and played it for nearly a year. At that point, with several level caps and all my friends playing something else, I left to join my friends in DCUO.
I came back to the game a few months ago to give it another try. There, I found out that the level cap is still 50 unless you sub, and you only get two character slots in F2P. I wanted to try before I bought; with this being impossible I uninstalled and instead installed Star Trek Online, a game I am thoroughly enjoying and spending money on.
The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!

You had 2 character slots and access to all the story content up to 50 and you claims it is impossible to try the game????

i think you also get access to 2 operations etc. per week, for free. Tbh, as a free to try game, SW:TOR really excels, it has more of the game open than just about any other MMO out there, if that isn't enough, then.. honestly.. no idea what would be acceptable. O.o
Nope, just that SWTOR is more of a zoned themepark then WoW, a game I despise, that it is so heavily instanced, so much on rails, no freedom, no open space flight, and the best one: the crap engine that can not handle a decent load.
Other then that: great game.

Well, i am an ex-SWG player, obviously not an Emo one though, and also, hate all the zoning, but love the game, also agree, i really wish they had chosen a different game engine than Hero engine, which even in its heavily modified state, still doesn't manage well with numbers, but it really is a good game despite the numerous limitations imposed on it. I know this thread is asking why there is so much hate for the game, but honestly, other than people who don't like that type of game anyway, i don't see that the game has any real hate for it going on, and whenever i play, which while not every day, i do tend to play it at least twice a week, it seems to be doing well population wise. Perhaps the OP needs to change the title of the thread to something more along the lines of, 'i don't like this game, why isn't there any hate for it?' instead.
The couple of times I have played SWTOR for a lengthy stay I have enjoyed it. Great storylines that are mostly compelling while you progress. It does get repetitive though & once you achieve highest level/gear for myself that is when it got stagnant. Most MMOs suffer from those similar problems. My toughest decision that weighed was why keep subscribing once I got my character or 8 characters maxed out. It just wasn't worth it to me & their incentives to stay subscribed month to month often weren't to my liking like many of their previous incentives (they should've made it were you could choose your monthly subscription reward) that would've at least kept me subscribed for a few more months. SWTOR has good atmosphere, pretty good community, good character development, pretty good gameplay, but like most MMOs it is suffering an over inflated economy nowadays & a bit of stagnation for maxed out characters. But of course I'm not into PvP so that takes away from me I acknowledge. SWTOR dead I think not, but it is just suffering from longevity just like other MMOs.

I have 4 level caps in that game. I am pretty sure that I have seen all of the content below 50 a number of times. All of my character slots are filled, and the lowest level I had amongst my 8 character slots was 22. So, do I activate one level cap and my 27 Commando (the only 'light side' class I had not capped was the soldier class) to remind me of the old content approaching 50? Or do I delete one and start over? And I enter the game after a 4 year hiatus and try to figure it out? All games evolve with time, and I am sure there were a lot of mechanics I would have to learn the hard way. I would have rather started with one of my very well equipped 50s and played that to relearn the game, although I would have hated to waste the time that I could have been gaining XP.
So I decided against it. And I am having a lot of fun with the reworked STO.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I love SWTOR, too, and actually am not a huge fan of SWG. That being said, they are so different that I feel like they could probably co-exist without conflict at all. If there were ever polar opposites, they are it. Neither is a bad game, just polar opposites as far as games go.

So great five years later you are still crying about a video game you don't play.? Pretty sure that tells us more about you then the game.
I played open beta or something, it felt like a generic fantasy MMO with a star wars skin, never touched it again. If I recall right, it started off as a very single player heavy experience as well. I don't like that in my MMO.
What mmo starts with a heavy multiplayer experience? Just like to point out that there are group quests beginning at lvl 5 if you want to try them. Heroic dungeons on every planet that require more then 1 player. Plus the flashpoints and pvp starts at lvl 10.
I never asked for a heavy multiplayer experience. I said it was a heavy single player experience. I think I was in a singleplayer instance for the first 30+ minutes of the game.
I also mentioned this was during beta. I'm sure the game has greatly changed since.
There are 4 starting planets and can start playing with people right from level 1. Been that way from beta till now.
Dunno then, I distinctly remember not seeing another soul for 30+ minutes when I tried it.
When you start the game your in an instance, which feeds you a bit of a back story and gives you your first quest. If you watch all the cut scenes it should take on average five minutes. Once you leave you're in the game world ready to do your first quest with the rest of the population.
I suppose if you are on a low pop server and play during the server's off peak, it may feel like you are by yourself and if that is the case I would suggest trying a different server or at least rolling a Sith character.
Good game. Has some flaws but I can find things wrong and people that write pages of complaints about them for every game. You aren't going to get the full gaming experience for free in 99.9% of the games out there. I skipped most of the group content the first time around and went back and did it to catch up when I tried the first two expansions. When I came back I had no idea that I was below the required level for 2nd tier flashpoint and was instantly hate flamed by two in my group and then kicked. LOL.
I would probably play more if it wasn't that this game doesn't align as much with all my personal tastes. I'd rather be playing other games after I check out the new content because group content isn't compelling enough to keep me in many games nowadays.
Because they spent hundreds of millions on a bad WoW clone. These games should be left to die not financially supported. The fans are as much to blame as the devs.

So because YOU don't like a particular game it should be shut down? Yeah sorry that isn't how the real world works...
So may things feels unpolished. A potential great new feature is developed and when it's "good enough" development stops. That's not how you make great games.
I used to log in once in a while to check up on things, but it's been weeks, if not months, since last. So far 5.0 doesn't sound promising, definedtly not enough to make me want to resubscribe.
I've had a great time playing SWTOR in the past, but since 3.0 i started to loose interest. 3.0 wasn't good, but compared to 4.0 it's great. So far 5.0 sounds like it will be following the lines of 4.0
This game can only still hold up because of the SW name it carries. Had it been a game of a entire new unique universe franchise, it would have been dead on the water a long time ago like Wildstar.

If we had a comparable game to this one your theory would hold a little bit of water. But because there is literally no other mmo like this when it comes to storytelling we cannot truly say this can we.

Yep and WoW would be dead without Warcraft, STO would be dead without Star Trek, ESO would be dead without Elder Scrolls on and on and on. People who make a comment like this are so ignorant.
It most certainly had some success ONLY because of it's known, maybe most popular IP in the world and NOT because of the game.I could easily see the shortcuts every map i entered, every idea from weapons and crafting.I could see the game had some nice ideas but never got finished properly,it 100% looks like the game got too costly and was finished up quickly to save budget.
If this game carried a different title it most certainly would have been worse, maybe not dead but not very successful either. However the industry costs go hand in hand,if it did not carry a known ip and licensing,it would have been a MUCH lower budget game and then who knows, maybe it would have went under.
As to the actual thread,i have no idea what so ever why the op *thinks there is some hate towards SWTOR.I personally think the game is very weak and looks sub par but i would never say i hate it,i played MANY hours and tried several times to go back to it.There definitely can be some accurate stereotyping out there, especially with a brand like Blizzard but with this game,i never got any impression there was some genuine hate for the game, again not sure why the OP would make this stuff up.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

You make it sound like you're new to this website, while we both know that you're not @Wizardry :pleased:
There's a bunch of regulars here that outright come onto threads about this game just to say how it should be shut down. No hate? Really? That's like saying no one on this site ever posts threads about how the good old days were so much better, or about how today's MMOs aren't worth spending money on.
As for an example of an MMO that's also story focused, with no big name to back it... The Secret World. Yes, it's much lower budget, but it's also still very much alive and getting updates despite being about SWTOR's age now.
I don't care about the Star Wars logo. I originally joined because of Bioware. Star Wars is a nice bonus, but I wouldn't play a game I didn't enjoy just for that. And a bunch of other people also play it because they enjoy it. Just because you don't give a fuck about the things the game does well, doesn't mean others don't appreciate those parts.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

Same, I wouldn't play a game just because of the IP. (at least most of the time) If the game concepts are not my cup of tea then I'll play a different game even with the consequence of the IP of the game being something I don't really care for.
So basically I'm a star wars fan but I'm not going to play SWTOR if it ain't my cup of tea. I'll be willing to play a game with a different brand instead. IP isn't a priority for me no matter how big of a fan I am of it, IP will at least grab my attention but doesn't mean I will decide to devote my time and money towards it.

But the acronym MMMORPG now currently means Microscopic Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Kappa.
