Which game beat you up and stole your lunch money?

There is always some game you come across that proves to be Captain Insano hard, where you never get anything done and end up just shutting it off.

For me, it was long, long ago. Some D&D type game (single player). My character had no light source and fell down a hole. Wandered around an underground tunnel for hours bouncing off walls. Couldn't see. Never did get out. Finally gave up.

How about you?

That's what the new character option is for.

As for the game that beat me? That would be Bureaucracy.  I got on the airplane once by pure randomness but forgot to save.  When I tried again I could never figure it out.  This was before walkthroughs were easily available on that newfangled thing called the World Wide Web.

Goddamn Ninja Gaiden.  Holy crap that was my first thought before seeing the replies.

Also, recently Hand of Fate.  Oh man, I did a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth playing Hand of Fate.

I played Dungeon Master, on the Amiga around 1989.  Spent hours wandering through a dungeon.  Hidden passages.  Pitch black when your torch died in some sections.   You fainted when you ran out of food and water and walked around dizzy until you found some.  No maps.  One of those games I had to leave alone for awhile and eventually came back to it and finished it, and the ending was well worth it.

i don't think i have ever played a game i considered TOO hard.if i do struggle at all it is usually because the controls are god awful, trying to do too many things with extremely cumbersome controls. However if the game's setup/design is that bad,i usually don't care and quit the game.
I often hear people talk about gaming is like a job sometimes, well to me the controls/UI alone can make a game feel worse than a job.
Still thinking and nope, nothing has ever felt insanely tough.

NEO online.  Played that game hard for a while, spent some money.  The game was shut down and I ended up with some of my astros back but you couldn't convert it back to money and ogplanet hasn't had a game since that I was interested in playing.

There was a time when they had albatross 18(pangya), cabal, and of course NEO -- how that site has fallen.

Metal Gear, TMNT and Ninja Gaiden on the NES used to take turns taking my money. I never completed Metal Gear or TMNT.. Ninja Gaiden took a lot of rage.
Ninja Gaiden on NES and a lot of those 80's games were evil.  I haven't felt that much gamer rage since.  At the time I just assumed all games would be like that from there on out.  I had forgotten about gamer rage as games these days are ultra nice.

Edit:  Ghosts and goblins was def worth a mention as someone below has.

Battletoads. This game is soul crushing. It's such a good game with great level design and it's ruined by limited continues. I'm not going to say I could beat it but I could get a hell of a lot farther if I didn't have to do that damn motorcycle level over and over again. It makes Ninja Gaiden look like childs play.

Interesting you feel that way.  I played it for eight years on and off and enjoyed most of that time immensely.  Sure the first 3 months were pretty bad, but it got a lot better after a couple months of patches.

I honestly can't think of any game I've quit because it's too hard.

The only ones that spring to mind are shooters. I'm not a fan of shooters in general, but my brothers loved them so used to play them a fair amount when younger. Something that always pissed me off was ridiculous view distances and ability to see through foliage (for AI).

For example: Operation Flashpoint. Great shooter, interesting missions etc. But, the AI could see through foliage. There was one level in particular, you end up by yourself in a small forest grove, surrounded by enemies. You were supposed to be able to hide under bushes so that if you were 100% hidden by foliage and didn't move, you wouldn't get found. NEVER worked.

There are also some games (like the halo series) where, for some reason, I just constantly struggled with the graphics. I have better than 20-20 vision, but somehow I constantly struggled to differentiate objects in the game. I wouldn't be able to see corridors branching off from the one I'm in, or see enemies standing 30m in front of me. I'd get lost on linear levels because I literally couldn't pick out a path or corridor or door on the screen. This used to be a common problem in the early days of 3d gaming (tomb raider is a good example), before shadows and light effects became good enough to make the world seem realistic, but it still crops up every now and again.

For me it's Pac-Man and R-type for arcade. The crew of the arcade house almost let me pay for the damage that I have cost in their joystick and arcade buttons LOL. For PC it's Dark soul and it's wretched boss monsters.

No Man's Sky, Black Desert, etc. I wouldn't say they beat me up -- I'd compare it more to manipulation and lies upon lies.

Sticking with MMOs, none, I'm afraid. I play Eve so little and so narrowly that my one unexpected PVP death was an interesting and respectful learning experience. I left EQ before getting to level 20 and never lost anything of mine (although I may have 'misplaced' a gifted Wurmslayer, so sorry dude).

Then I went and WTFpwned WoW all over its face.

Outside of MMOs there are plenty, one special mention would be Evochron. The zero-g flight concept almost totally escapes me, I can't even complete an easy combat mission more than 50% of the time.

    MMO - Everquest

    Pitch black.

Going back to a city for safety, end up in middle of the woods
Hear a skeleton coming behind you
turn around, don't see no skeleton in the dark
Turn back and keep going further into the woods, thinking its the way to a city (but its the opposite direction)
    Well now you are dead!
