Saw this video while browsing Crowfall on Youtube today. I had been watching alot of the older combat videos and hated how static and slow everything used to look.

Well apparently the combat got a major overhaul recently and this dude "ItsZiz" just made this combat video showing off the new combat and I LOVE the way it looks!

So fast-paced looking, probably some of the most fun looking combat ive seen in an Alpha MMO, tons of freedom and strafing makes it look much more tactical as well.

Heres the vid for those interested, Its def raised my interest up ten fold.

Looks like a console action game, which is a nightmare for a slow oldtimer like me!  ;)

Now I have hopes for the game. Combat is a big one for me. Needs some polish but looks a lot better.

If they're going to have it be like this, there needs to be different character states. Hit stun, block stun and combos. Right now people are just running around like nutters trying to out-strafe each other. There's no risk versus reward. Lots of just wild running and hacking about. How does a thief or assassin type get their back stab bonus in all that?

I'm glad the pace has picked up. I'm glad the movement is a bit better, but what's going to end up happening is that classes with 360 degree spinneroonie aoe skills will have advantage and folks who actually have to aim will be salty.

They're going to have to add another layer of meta to make sure it doesn't turn into Tribes Ascend.

@MightyUnclean It's not all about combat, far from that (and this is still small scale / early tests). Anyway you can always find some tab target game, if you find this too twitchy.

Speaking of combat, they just released tutorial for all 8 archetypes available so far (remaining 5 are yet to be introduced):

You can't just spam your abilities and hope to win. My Duelist which is an assassin type has killed the Myrmridon players, sure the Myrms are a bit OP atm but it is possible to outplay them and know to watch out for their berserk stuff.

Duelist I find a high risk reward, it is probably going to have one of the higher skillcaps but be essentially for disabling casters/healers. Every game needs to have its low skill cap class and its high skill cap classes.
I don't disagree. I appreciate the progress greatly. I feel like Artcraft stumbled upon a play/movement style that they can really refine and call their own even though they started out wishing to use Tera as their benchmark. This is better for them.

I just hope it doesn't stay like this without refinement. This style will need more metagame or Benny Hill chase music.

Disclaimer : I've never followed this game before, just came across this thread and video and decided to give it a look, this comment is based purely on the video. I know this is Alpha/Pre-Alpha so take the rest of my comment for what it's worth.

Few points that came to mind while watching the video:

1 - UI takes A LOT of room on the screen. I'm pretty sure a few areas are just Alpha-related UI stuff that will disappear at release, but the rest is just big. I hope they'll give players the ability to resize the UI.

2 - Combat looks a bit senseless. I'm reminded of Darkfall's combat, albeit with faster movement. My biggest gripe with Darkfall's combat is that PvP looks a bit like a battle between headless chickens running around in 8-figures to avoid attacks and attack back. Based on this video, it seems to be falling into the same trap as Darkfall.

3 - It seems to be taking quite a while to kill anyone, which makes the combat look a bit tedious. Of course you don't want your players to drop dead in a sec, but in the video it looks like it's taking almost minutes to kill a single player, which is odd.

With that said, I can at least appreciate developers trying to move away from tab-targeting combat in favor of something different, in this case more action-oriented. And before some people respond to me with "It's just an Alpha, quit criticizing", I know it's an Alpha, but that doesn't mean that any opinion is bad. Nothing is set in stone here, and these systems will undoubtedly be altered and adjusted over time until they find the formula that works for them and their community. Hopefully it will work out for them.

The combat visually looks good but mechanically its still underwhelming where is the deeper game play what is going to want to make me potentially invest hours into this world... like idk i hope crow fall does well but it feels really rushed rn

This video was made by retarded guy that has no idea of netcode or massive MMO combat.

The fact they did rooting is to relieve server of constantly communicating position to with the client. This way they can actually have large massive combats.

Now, like this it will just be a lag fest ( which is allready evident from the video )

And for what ? To please circle strafing crowd ?

Why they dont play overwatch or something ?

As soon as saw this games combat I lost all interest. Now that I've seen this video I'm actually saddened. Crowfall looks like 50 other MMO's now, with Neverwinter inspired combat......RIP the genre

I should of never played BDO online lol. I was interested in this game, but the combat to me look terrible, and the animations and graphics worse. Yeah I know those 2 things aren't always the things to look for, I mean I played uncharted waters online, and that has super nintendo graphics, but BDO raised my bar on what a mmo should look like, and this one def doesn't cut it.

There is, but it's an ability of the knight, not something that every archetype gets. Other archetypes have other means of avoiding damage.

Looks like they are going in the right direction.  A lot of people don't even know the difference between pre-alpha and open beta.
Are you onto something or just on something?

There's still a long way to go and a lot of stuff to implement. The current Big World is focused on harvesting, crafting and combat. Things that are not yet in the game: POIs, caravans, construction, sieges, promotion classes, disciplines, EKs, mounts, rulesets, vessel system, thralls, 5 more archetypes, additional mob types, more crafting and harvesting.

A lot of this stuff has been worked on for a while but is not yet ready for testing. Sieges were tested in the last milestone, but we won't see it again until players can build their own fortifications. I would expect POIs (lumber mills, quarries, etc.) and caravans to come online at the same time.

Darkfall managed, despite the fairly bad quality of its code, to hold battles of over 100 players in the same area at its peak (the biggest being roughly over 200 players) with minimal to no impact on the server. I see no reason why this game would not be able to achieve something similar with the proper tweaking to its combat (seeing that it's similar to Darkfall).

This video is from pre-alpha and the combat system was changed to this new formula recently (according to the guy in the video), so that the overall game performance is taking a hit should not be surprising, especially in pre-alpha) and will likely be addressed over time. It's fine to dislike changes made to a game, but it's a bit weak to call the guy who made the video retarded (who doesn't appear to be related to the Crowfall team based on his channel), and use the game performance in a pre-alpha as your argument, even more so if it's something other MMOs relying on similar mechanics (i.e Darkfall) have managed to achieve.
  • botrytisbotrytis Member RarePosts: 3,363
They borrowed so much from so many games, it is ridiculous. GW1, warriors used Adrenaline based skills, as in GW2, so that is nothing new. The combat looks mediocre at best and I realize this is a pre-alpha but the basic mechanics have to be in place.

The more I see, the less interested I become.

I circle strafe in WoW, so do many others. Circle strafing is something I've been doing since a little game long ago called Infantry. I personally can't stand combat where you just face each other and roll your face across the keyboard.

You also have to keep in mind this is pre-alpha/early alpha at best, of course it is going to be laggy.
eh, I never considered circle strafing to have any skill involved. It's sort of lowest common denominator.

No GW2 combat looks way better than that. This just looks like some bad hybrid of all the different types they liked and came up with junk.

This was my thought too.  If they are going to rely on action combat that heavily then the TTK needs to be alot lower.  The character he was playing looked to be a mage of some type.  Typically those character types deal high damage and have low hp in return for balance.  This seems to be the opposite with low damage and high hp.  Granted the game is still way pre-alpha and adjusting stat and damage numbers is easily done programatically.  I just hope that there is some serious tuning before any type of beta starts.
