Looking for something new (old?)

papabear151papabear151 Member UncommonPosts: 110
I started MMORPG's back in the late 90's. I think wow was fun but ultimately a dumbed down arcade version of the better MMO's that were already out. Asheron's Call was probably my favorite MMO and TBH if there were still updates and a large enough player base then I'd probably be back there.

Anyways, I'm looking for a new MMO to dip myself into. I don't want more of the same regurgitated crap that has come out lately. I enjoy a challenge. I like some freedom. I want something that is either pushing the envelope or returning back to what MMO's started off being, ya know, the open worlds, the actual massively multiplayer aspect.

So, what'ya got?

which suggests 'massive' is really no larger then the number of social connections you can maintain

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

I'm not sure if this meets your criteria or not, but, Elder Scrolls Online is free to try until November 21st.  I'm thoroughly enjoying it now, and was one of the people that didn't care for it during its early phases.  The number of changes to the game have really turned it around, it's a beautiful world and the community thus far has been very supportive.

After checking this out I'm curious why you suggest RoA over DnD. From what I've been able to gather it seems that RoA is just going to be a stable version of the 2012 game whereas DnD is going to grow and advance..

His number is 150, yet being massive is not just a relative term or a scientific one for an online game, because, like life, just having other people around you irregardless of a social connection helps create a sense of place and immersion.
the idea as it pretains to virtual worlds is this

your social connections after about 150 basically turns into bots.
They are just AI roaming around. So if you have a virtual world that is huge, filled mostly with AI and 150 people that you like. chances are you would never expereince the difference between that and an mmo with 50,000 online all at once.

Now are there some exceptions? absolutely. but are those exceptions common place experiences that happen daily? no

and using Elite as an example where such sizes matter like global conflict etc. those items are 1. rare and 2. can be abstracted out by data collection with the effects then re-injected into everyones game experience like Elite does

First of all. I prefer to have more than 150 people. If I never "knew" there were bots and not players then I might not "notice" the difference. But if I know, then it ruins it for me. It's a personal thing and someones theory one way or the other isn't going to make an impact on my life, make all the quotes you want.

Second of all, this is my thread and it's a thread about finding me a game, can you have this discussion elsewhere please.

In all fairness you were given suggestions already. What you choose to do with those or not is beside the point.
We see threads like this pop up about once a week. For years.
What you want is an old school like MMO wrapped in a modern skin with group content and challenge.
You and about every other person on these forums.

Project Gorgon is a nice game with a ton of freedom as has been mentioned repeatedly already. You said you liked AC but gave no additional parameters as to what you are willing to play.
As the exact game you are looking for?  Not out there yet. Check back once Pantheon is released.
Thank you for the suggestions, thanks to everyone in this thread for the suggestions.

I'm trying project gorgon, i tried DF. That doesnt mean that I'm done taking suggestions.

I did like AC, in fact, I'm contemplating just resubbing to AC at this point. Gorgon looks pretty neat, wouldn't mind something sci-fi either. You are right though, I think the game I'm looking for just isn't out there yet.

Here's hoping gorgon scratches some sort of itch for me.
