Not a fan of ESO (I find it boring as shit). I do play GW2, though. It is still pretty popular.

Gw2 completely. The game fully encourages you to play at your own pace and wants you to explore the world. Combat to me, also feels a lot better.

It is hard to recommend one. GW2 has been my favorite mmo since it launched so i would always recommend it, but i also have ESO on PS4 with all 4 major DLC(that come with gold edition) and it is great too. If you had said you were considering ESO without DLC then i would have told you to not waste your money.

Cant go wrong with either purchase, just get whichever game attracts you the most, then save some more cash and buy the other one later.

You can also wait for black friday next week, maybe you can get both of them for the same price you are willing to pay right now for one, who knows.

Test out the F2P version of both games then decide.

I am leaning towards HoT, even though the base game is something I consider better storywise.
I found GW2 overall more fun and there are more players overall.

I found ESO extremely boring so never got into it, if you really want a Skrim game get Skyrim or Oblivion both are significantly better and more fun.

I have a lot more time played in GW2, but barely 5 hours in ESO.

I had the exact opposite experience. ESO appealed to me considerably more than GW2 did. In GW2 when you pick your class and weapons that creates like half of your build for you. You are stuck with a bunch of skills whether you happen to want all of them or not. This ended up being so disgusting to me that I never got a character past the first zone when you exit the tutorial. I just was not into the game.

In ESO your build is 100% customizable. Every skill on your skillbar is there because you put it there (Like the original Guild Wars) and then you can even pick one of two versions of the skill once you are high enough level.

Maybe I would have enjoyed GW2 if I had tried it with someone else like I did with ESO, but overall ESO just seems to be a better game to me. They're both themeparky themeparks but ESO gave me more freedom to build my own character which is what ultimately ended in me... getting my character about halfway to max before returning to sandbox games.

I am a massive fan of GW2 but even I admit. Right now, Elder Scrolls Online is the best MMO on the market IMO. $9.99 on Steam and free ESO Plus weekend.

Ask yourself this, do you prefer lots of voice acting and quests with good stories (ESO)? Or do you prefer something completely different where you can just roam around and find people to help in the world (GW2)?

I'm going to go with Eldurian.

GW2 class system is junk. GW1 class system was vastly superior.

In GW1, you could be a Necromancer (best necro for any MMO) with a huge horde of minions, but also be a monk that could heal

    Or a ranger mesmer

Or a warrior necromancer (that was epic)

So many class combos, with SO many skills/spells in GW1, that make GW2 look like the developers were high off drugs when redesigning the GW1 class system.

And GW2 has the worst pet class I've ever played in an MMO (complete opposite of GW1). The necromancer is junk, tiny little army of minions (that is NOT a necromancer) and the pet AI is junk.

Get GW1 if you want a guild wars game, its vastly superior. Not even just the class system, GW1 is way more fun than GW2 is.

However, I'll disagree with Eldurian on ESO. I found ESO to be really boring. There is no progression. Before one tamriel, level one...I killed monsters in the same amount of hits as I did at level 20. No progression. One tamriel makes this even worse. Literally, at level 1 you'll kill monsters the same as at level 30 (which is how far I got).

Skyrim, Oblivion and Morrowind are vastly superior elder scrolls games. So I ended up doing another 100 hours of (modded) Skyrim, which is more than I got out of ESO in one playthrough lol. I have 1000s of hours playing modded Skyrim, way more worth the money than ESO ever could be.

But if you are trying to decide between the two, ESO is way better than GW2 is. That game is junk.

Also to add. You get WAY more out of paying for ESO than you do GW2. ESO, you get tons of stuff if you pay for it.

Both cost about same amount of money, though I think GW2 is more expensive.

ESO, you pay a single fee a month for all DLC+a resource bag without any weight/item limit.

In GW2, you have to pay a TON of money for immortal harvesting tools (required for a crafter/harvester), but you also have to pay a large amount of money to unlock all the story content.

I did the math some time back before one tamriel, and paying for ESO for 6 months (give or take a month) was actually cheaper than playing GW2 and needing to unlock and buy tons of stuff in their gem shop. Sure people might say its optional, but for a crafter/harvester/lore freak that wants to see all the story and just craft the rest of the time, GW2 is very expensive. To buy an immortal pickaxe (which harvests more than NPC bought pickaxes, and also doesn't break) cost 10 dollars I believe, maybe a little less.

Don't remember exact amount. No matter the exact cost, even if it was 3-5 dollars, it was pretty expensive for a single item. Maybe if it was 99 cents, but it definitely wasn't that cheap. Now imagine all harvest tools+story contnet+Hearts of thorn

ESO is a much better deal between the two. Get WAY more content in ESO for much cheaper than in GW2.

Sounds like you never quite got the hang of your build if it took you just as many hits at level 30 as level 1 lol.

Probably not entirely your fault though because ESO sells the idea of "play how you want." What they don't tell you is that there are some ways to play and some skills to choose that are infinitely better than other choices.

To an experienced player what you're saying sounds like nonsense. I can kill much better and faster at level 10 compared to 1, at level 20 compared to 10, at 30 compared to 20... before and after One Tamriel. And I'm not particularly hard core nor elite... that's what all of us can do once you get the hang of what skills to use how and when.

Now gameplay aside, and my own personal opinion aside.

If GW2 offered a monthly fee like ESO, with some bonuses and SOME free gems (like ESO offers in their monthly fee). And all stories unlocked if you stay subbed. GW2 would be a lot closer to worth the price to ESO. As it is, its only worth playing GW2 100% free. GW2 really nickle and dimes their players sadly. And a monthly fee would fix a lot of that, but that won't ever happen.

ESO offers the most for actually paying for it. Tons and tons of content and things to do
GW2 actually offers more if you don't plan to buy anything at all.

But my own personal opinion. GW2 gets repetitive, and fast. It gets pretty boring, and only good for short play times. Doesn't help the necromancer sucks compared to the GW1 one, and GW1 class system is superior.

With that said, ESO without paying for it rather sucks too...you are gated out of a LOT of content in ESO. All the awesome DLCs you either have to buy the DLC (not worth it) or pay a monthly fee.

Both games focus pretty heavily on the cash shop, but at least ESO lets you pay a small fee to skip all that nickle and diming crap companies like to do. GW2 problem with the cash shop would be fixed if you could pay like you can in ESO.

Dunno why people think cash shops are worth the money, I see people spend more on DLC than they would spend years of playing in ESO if they just subbed instead. And GW2 is just as bad, but worse, cause with no option to skip the junk cash shop.

Oh I never said ESO was a good game, just better than GW2. Like I said I only ever reached halfway to max level. And that is because it was the first MMO my fiance and I ever played together and then her computer crapped out so that we couldn't play together anymore. I stopped playing at that point and by the time she got a new one we were no longer interested.

That's one of those games I enjoyed 90% because of who I was playing it with, and 10% because there was actually anything good about the game itself.

Played both games alot , GW2 to end game Engie all gear then quit , didnt really enjoy the game from 30-80 , Terrible game imo and has set the genre back ...

ESO is a far better MMORPG in  everyway imo , Combat,LOre,Classes, Crafting,RvR ,Graphics etc...

But as has been pointed out you can try both for free and make up your mind ..

If you wanna play a mmoRPG buy the Eso but if you wanna play a MMOrpg buy the Guild Wars 2. I like both of them. Eso has better character development, amazing quests and lore. Guild Wars 2 has better group content, better pvp and amazing events. I can write a lot of pros and cons for both of the games but I'm too lazy for that. Just try both of them and decide yourself. You can try both of them for free right now. Personaly I like Guild Wars 2 a little more.

Like everyone says both are pretty good.  About the same amount of players in both.  For me GW2 gets the edge.  You don't really need HoT until you get to 80 and want to work on your elite skills.  It depends on your playstyle so try both.  GW2, respects are free, large crafting inventory space free, auction house prices are reasonable, porting is cheaper...  I like ESO's graphics and lighting is better, any class can use any weapons, both have good combat.

GW2 hands down IMO. PvP matches sells it for me, as well as WvW I feel is more fun in GW2

I had two characters make it to level 30ish on GW2.  I played a trial on ESO.  ESO is a better game for me.
